I attended a two hour home brewing class here and was blown away. The owner, Charlie (along with comrades Dan and Andrew) gave an incredible presentation in a relaxed atmosphere. We sipped various brews and discussed taste profiles, hops, grains - you name it! The guys were so laid back and friendly and answered all of my asanine questions. I bought a home brewing kit and can't wait to get started, even if my first batch turns out looking like the gruel they ate on the ship in The Matrix. If you are even REMOTELY interested in beer, you'd be a fool not to check out this establishment. I'm already looking forward to trying a plethora of recipes and becoming a regular customer here. Good selection of brewing supplies, but the prices are kind of high, especially the carboys. $50 for a 6 gallon carboy? Thats $10 too much. But make sure to double-check any info the owner gives you. I pointed out the bottle filler I had at home and asked for tubing that would fit it and the tubing he gave me totally didn't fit, not even close. Long story short, bottling my beers was a messy, awful affair. When I emailed him to complain he just gave me the runaround and said it was somehow my fault. A simple "oops, sorry", was all I wanted. And the "beer exchange fridge" is kind of odd. You give him two beers and only get to take one since the owner wants to drink one of yours in order to make sure it is worthy of staying in the fridge. I would rather give two different beers, then take two different beers and take my chances that at least one will be good. Overall though, a pretty good homebrew store. Good selection of grain, hops yeast and equipment. Worth checking out if you are in the area.

It's a teeny space but they seem to have pretty much everything you might need and, also, the guys in there are super knowledgable about the makign of beer and of wine AAAAAND... they usually have something on draft to sample. All the ingredients from my first ever batch of beer came from here once upon a time. Highly recommended.

I was pleasantly surprised and way overspent my budget Prices are cheaper than Amazon on many things and only SLIGHTLY higher on other items. I could have gotten my mini auto siphon for the same price. Bottle wands are the same price. Bungs are a little over $1 each and airlocks are $1.50, so cheaper than Amazon unless buying in bulk. In fact everything is pretty close to Amazon, and in the case of glassware- cheaper. (and safer.) The 1gal jars I use for kombucha are under $7 each. Making a case $28. I paid $20 on Amazon for 2 booch jars. Glass 1gal carboys are also just under $7. You have to buy a growler cap for them separately. Or just get a universal bung. They have cheesemaking supplies, kombucha and kefir cultures plus all the right parts for getting those things fermenting right. I might've found my new favorite place.

I cna share that after all was said and done that say this place was my father-in-law's favorite Plymouth brewery. He liked the set up. He liked the guy behind the bar. He liked the aesthetic. Downeast Cider House is located in East Boston, an area of Boston that I have never been before…read more But I had discovered Downeast Cider at The Big E (the state fair in Springfield, MA). Downeast Cider makes a special hard cider flavor every year for the state fair and this year's is the Big E Cream Puff. Last year they made the cider donut, which was very popular and so they brought it back again this year, but as a seasonal fall flavor. One employee told me that she didn't even know the flavor for the state fair until a few weeks before hand because it just takes a good deal of effort to create the right flavored cider for the state fair. I really loved the Big E Cream Puff cider so much that the next day after the state fair, we ended up visiting Downeast Cider's tap room (which is dog friendly and you are also allowed to bring your own food. Please note that Downeast Cider does not serve food and well you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach). My husband and I came on a Saturday afternoon, around 1:15 pm (we took the train so I am not sure about how the parking situation is like but I did see some street parking within a reasonable walking distance). We were greeted at the entrance and given a token. The tap room does not do full pours and only do flights (sad because I really wanted a full glass of that Big E Cream Puff). After looking over the list of drinks available, we ended up getting: For my Flight: Cream Puff, Cider Donut, Pumpkin Blend, Blackberry Pie. The cream puff is what brought us here and it really did taste like a liquid form of a cream puff. You could taste the cream and the pâte à choux (or the choux pastry that houses the cream/ whipped cream filling). I loved both the Cider Donut and Pumpkin Blend but wasn't a fan of the Blackberry Pie, but my husband did. For my Husband's: Honey Crisp, Apple Pie, Imperial Mango, Straw Rhubarb- My husband liked all of the flavors but his favorite was the Imperial Mango. I really liked the apple pie, very nice and sweet, honestly tasted just like a liquid form of an apple pie. I wasn't really a fan of the other flavors. ------------------------------ (Total= For 2 Flights, $29.96) After we finished our flights, we were invited to do a small tasting of a new cider that this cidery is working on. So we were led upstairs to try an IPA Imperial Mango. It had more alcohol than the Imperial Mango. We filled out a brief questionnaire to provide our feedback based on smell, taste, color, etc. I didn't really like it and my husband thought it was okay but preferred the Imperia Mango that he had earlier from his flight. The employee that was giving us the tasting told us that they generally do these tastings (for feedback on new flavors they are creating) on weekends in case you are wondering if you can try a new potential flavor on your next visit. Also the employee helping us told us that it can be pretty challenging to create flavors that taste just as good as the food item they are trying to use. She told me that with the Cream Puff, it took a lot of time to really get the flavors to taste the way it did, as I had told her that was my favorite flavor and I loved how smooth it was. Overall, I enjoyed our visit and so glad we came out to visit Downeast Cider's tap room and would come again if I was visiting Boston.
