I booked this place hearing some of the reviews and seeing some of the photos and it was definitely worth it. The service was fantastic (even with my awful attempt at ordering in italian she let me have a go) and quick for the fact it was really busy! The atmosphere is nice and romantic but not over the top so allows for a relaxing date and warm feeling. The food was not cheap but nothing in Milan really is! The portions were great and the size of the milanese is as big as it looks - filling to say the least! However the risotto alla milanese, a specialty I tried in a couple of restaurants, was the benchmark that never got beaten during our trip! We fought over the last few bites and I was tempted to order another one but the rest of the food was so great we kind of just wanted it all! Located in the Navigli neighborhood, we walked along the canals for about a hour in the freezing cold and worked up and appetite. This isn't one of those places along the canal with employees inviting you in for "happy hour" or aperitivo. As soon as you step foot inside this place, you'll feel cozy and welcome. We drank the house wine, shared an antipasto Misto (mixed appetizer plate of traditional Milanese items- fried bread, potato skins, pickled nerves... Totally strange item but worth a try, Salumi and cheese. The appetizer alone was a feast! For dinner, the Milanesa was a must! I ordered it extra thin with a side of mashed potatoes. Take note- the portions are enormous! I barely ate half. My man ordered the risotto Damm-atra. (Saffron risotto served with a sausage and bean stew) both dishes were awesome. Super rustic and totally traditional. The service as friendly, the atmosphere is humble and the food delicious. Anyone looking for an adventure outside the high trafficked Duomo area Will enjoy this spot.

Their polenta - a beloved wintertime recipe - takes hours of continuous stirring to cook it to the point where it's fragrant and unctuous to perfection, and despite normally being just a side to a main meat course, here the polenta shines when prepared with raw egg yolk and Raschera cheese fondue. A must-try: the restaurant's terrific pasta and borlotti bean soup. It was a trek and a half to get there with 2 buses and a brisk walk but totally worth it the minute you walk in and greeted by their sweet Italian charm. Reservation needed! Our waiter was very pleasant, fast, and accommodating towards us. Inside looks like a small diner. Would love to come here again just because they made me feel at home as I was eating.

Be sure to clean your plate or you will get interrogated - we snuck outside and secretly dispose of a whole meatball. The interior is an unsolvable paradox. When you look one direction, you feel like you're transported to the handsome 1950's with the bar construction, faema espresso machine, and the interesting stone floor. But there's an element of third-world-country: the stained, hole-ridden tablecloth, the tattered sheet dividing the restaurant, a light bulb decorated by crepe paper wrapped around it. The bathrooms were described to me as something between a hole in the ground and a toilet. It's probably going to be completely empty there - except for a man watching TV behind the divider. However, there's something strangely "romantic" about de Lina in the modern metropolis of Milan. It's a safe-place from the chaotic outside world where you and your dining partner will be forced to rough it for a couple hours. Think if you could take entertainment and inverse it... for EUR 35 for two people, what a way to spend a night. And remember... be ready to clean your plate... by any means possible.

The menu is actually not strictly Milanese, they have items that belong to other regional traditions like sciatt or polenta taragna, fried cheese balls and cheese polenta from Valtellina. We didn't complain about this discrepancy, we actually enjoyed both dishes even if not traditional from Milan. Then we got risotto alla milanese con ossobuco, the symbol of Milanese cuisine, and it was really really good. The risotto was creamy, buttery and delicious, the ossobuco "melt in your mouth" tender and with a lot of delicious bone marrow in the bone. Fantastic. Risotto ai funghi porcini freschi was very good too. The tagliatelle al ragù di cinghiale (boar) were very good, but the tagliatelle were a bit too tough, which is very strange for fresh pasta. It felt like the fresh pasta was left to dry out and then it was not cooked enough to rehydrate it. Whatever, the ragù was delicious. Finally the mondeghili, typical Milanese fried meat balls, although delicious, were not authentic, at least according to the expert in the group. Here I was, at Turin's Porta Susa intermodal station and, after entering the Metro area, a guy was having issues with his ticket and was asking me how it all worked. He assumed I was a local. I suppose that was flattering in that I wasn't mistaken for an "ugly American." When he ended up downstairs on the platform, he told me he was from Milan so I asked him for the name of some "real deal" Milanese restaurants that are popular with the locals. Amici Miei was at the top of his list. Amici Miei is not that easy to get to. It's not near the main station or the Duomo. However, the Metro and a short tram ride will get you there. Let me go to the food and then address prices, service, and more. I didn't know what I would eat, so the table next to me "decided" for me. The tables are close to each other and the two young ladies at the adjacent table, one Italian and the other American, had ordered the same dish. I told the server that that's what I'd order. It was a very large Milanese cutlet, which they term "orecchio di elefante" (elephant's ear). That's because the bone is attached at its outer end and gives it that look. The fact that there is a bone can be ignored because the cutlet is generous. It was excellent, not to mention filling, and was garnished with potatoes. For the beverage, I ordered a bottle of mineral water and, to make it last through the meal, I ordered it "gassata." I had called Amici Miei to make a reservation. The person who answered was humorous and accommodating. When I went in, he told me that he had spoken with me on the phone. (Aren't phones great ... for what they were initially intended to do?) The server, the person who bussed the tables, and the cashier at the bar were informally friendly, which works for me. The place is in an older building, is not that roomy, and it must be popular because it was hopping on a weeknight. The fact that the Bocconi (Italy's equivalent of Harvard Business School, but with a higher admission rate) is a few blocks down the street probably sends customers their way. The price was a Milanese price, hence an urban Northern Italian price, and fair for the bountiful cutlet. The name Amici Miei is sort of funky. If you said "miei amici," that would mean you're talking about your friends in casual conversation. Inverted, "amici miei" sounds more declarative in an endearing or formal way, as if standing in front of a room with a gavel or about to make a toast, and then continue with what you wish to announce. This helped me remember the name of this restaurant that the Milanese visitor at a Turin Metro station told me about.
