This Mexican joint is right between UCSF and Inner Irving's food strip, serving breakfast, tacos, pupusas, fajitas and more. I had a regular burrito with beef and black beans to go. The free chips and the salsas (red ones got a kick to it!) were appreciated. I ate half of it and save the other half for tomorrow, cos it's BIG! Came here for a snack and ordered the carne asada fries. It was a slow night but it took longer than expected for the fries to come out and when it did....so underwhelming and disappointing. Fries tasted like they fried stale fries to make them crispy again. There was barely any cheese, the carne asada tasted old and dry, and you're not given any salsa unless you ask for it (only small containers available). Yummy fish tacos and good chips and guacamole. Their menu is full of tasty looking items and I will definitely be back. The only negatives - the two salsas provided with the chips, not a great flavor, but whatever, the guac more than makes up for that. The bigger negative for me is that the tortilla for the tacos falls apart completely. A hard taco, or double soft tortillas, or a thicker soft tortilla could've prevented the entire taco basically falling apart in my hand. read more

Tried the quesabirrias and they were ok. The Salvadorian empanada dessert was interesting. I believe traditional Salvadoran Empanadas de Leche are sweet, golden-fried plantain pastries filled with a warm vanilla custard known as leche poleada. I also tried the chilaquiles with red salsa and was a bit disappointed. Their chips are good on their own, but the chilaquiles were all soggy. It looked like a lot of chips too. New spot in the inner sunset that's walkable from UCSF and close to Golden Gate Park. We came for a late lunch on Saturday and decided to try a pupusa (the one with meat and cheese beans) and their appetizer enchiladas to share. You order first and then grab seating. It's a small spot with 4-6 tables inside. Food didn't take long and you can hear and smell all the great food noises coming from the kitchen! Food was delicious and my tummy was quite happy!! Really solid local spot specializing in El Salvadorian food (and tacos too haha). The atmosphere is very casual and a good choice for any time of the day. You order at the counter and they will serve you if you choose to eat there. We were really impressed with the yucca fries. Very delicious, and it satiated our yuca frita craving from when we went to Costa Rica recently. I had the al pastor and fish tacos which I thought were okay. I enjoyed the fish taco the most. Katalina was our culinary superhero, rescuing us from a flavorless fate by ordering the best stuff on the menu. The 2 meat super burrito - carnitas and chicken were explosive flavor combos and their large carne asada taco was a real champion. Al Chile's barely out of diapers at four months old, but it's already rocking five-star reviews like a boss. They're on top of things, and their grub isn't the only awesome thing - their service is laughably good. The joint's clean, but the bare walls could use some pics or paint to jazz it up. read more

I hate to admit when I've never even heard of a place, but it makes me glad that I have friends all over the city who have carved out their favorite spots. I met a good buddy of mine for lunch and I am already looking for excuses to come back. It ended up being three of us and so we got a bunch of things and shared them, though for me, the highlight was probably the revuelta pupusa. I love anything encased in some kind of dough, but the pork in this bad boy was as good as any I've ever had. California burrito was also excellent, probably my top 5 in the city, which is higher praise than it might sound, because I could probably list off a top 20 pretty quickly. Of all we tried, the torta might have come in last place, but not because it was bad, the others were just SO good. I would totally get a torta here and be happy. I get the feeling, though, that you could probably order anything and end up pretty happy with it. Simple place, great staff, I really can't say enough about the experience. read more

I was in the neighborhood on errands and my friend and I were ready for lunch. This place popped up in her search and she loves pupusas, so it was an easy yes. We were warmly greeted by the staff. The menu was simple yet plentiful - not in the mood for pupusas? Try a burrito, taco, or enchilada... off the beaten path from the 9th/Irving center of the hood, but affordable and well worth the side quest. I got a pupusa and a super taco with shrimp, and my friend got 2 pupusas. Both the pupusas and tortillas are handmade and delicious. Looking for lunch and this place popped up on Yelp. Parking was impossible so I dropped off my wife and waited in car. Ordered a total of 4 pupusas and dessert empanadas (not knowing what to expect with the empanadas). Waited about 30 minutes. 10 minute drive home and food was still warm. My bean and cheese pupusa did not have any cheese, bummer. The other pupusas would have been better with more cheese. There was no "cheese stretch". The green sauce was thin, not much flavor. Curtido and red sauce were decent. Overall, passable. Would return for the pupusas but will pass on the empanadas next time (not the pastry I'd thought and not much flavor). read more

When I get super burritos in SF I usually have to 2 hand hold the monster that is a super burrito. For close to $20 the first bar that I need from a super burrito is it being the size of my head. Unfortunately it was tiny and none of the ingredients were warm (I ate there). Staff is great tho I was just hoping for a bomb big ahh super burrito steaming from the inside after my first bite but I got a 1/5 tiny not so super burrito that was just as warm as if I door-dashed it from 45 minutes away. . I'll try one more time in a few weeks and hopefully change this to a 5/5. ILL BE BACK AL CHILE read more

I asked about the fried tilapia, one of my favorite dishes, and was told the fish was fresh when they got it but about a week old. I appreciate their honesty and since none of the Yelpers ever reviewed it, I passed. Ordered a fish taco and bean w/cheese papusa. I kept hearing the microwave going off during my 15 minute stay. Also ordered a side of guacamole. Nothing I had was anything special and the restaurant wouldn't survive in the Mission. Side note, I'm not a fan of papusas. The side cabbage did taste fresh however along with canned sliced jalapeño. read more

I was excited to try this place out as the neighborhood desperately needs a decent taqueria / burrito joint. Additionally, having worked with a lot of Salvadorenos, I also enjoy a good pupusa, so Salvy Mex seemed like the best of both worlds. To try it out, I got a burrito and a couple pupusas. The service was quick and kind and the place was clean if empty with plenty of small tables. The pupusas were solid, esp. for the location. There weren't a lot of variations, but they had some classics. I will definitely get these again and can recommend them. So far so good. However, the burrito was pretty disappointing. First off it was full of soggy shredded lettuce, which to be frank, just does not belong in a burrito. Secondly the refried beans were underseasoned and the asada wasn't what I'd expect from a mexican taqueria. Lastly, the salsas were very vinegery, not spicy and distinctly watery. Ultimately I'm glad to have Al Chile in the neighborhood, but I personally can only recommend them for the Salvy and not the Mex. read more

The staff are friendly and accommodating. I asked for extra curtido because my husband ate most of the original portion we were served. Of course, pupusas are the star, perfectly griddled, nice ratio of flavorful filling to masa, but I also like their refried beans. They're just done well. And the rice too. The restaurant isn't large or fancy (I do like all the football club scarves that line the walls and the fun soccer ball light fixtures) but it's a homey neighborhood spot, that can accommodate a large party in a pinch. We came in almost at closing time and not long after we sat down, a party of nine also sat down. And we were all served without feeling rushed.

My first visit there I wasn't sold on their pupusas but when their brick and mortar location here opened up I went again to see how it was since I love pupusas and now they are in my regular rotation. The space is big and service is friendly with the free coffee (which I don't actually drink since I'm not a coffee guy). While it's not the fastest, the food is terrific so I am fine waiting for my delicious pupusas! I usually get the pork, bean and cheese pupusas which are really good but mixed it up last time and got the jalapeno and cheese ones but felt like there wasn't quite enough cheese in those so I'll prob just go back to the pork, bean and cheese ones since they seem more balanced. I also love both Balompie locations for pupusas if you need a reference on the types that I like.

Parking is usually ok in the area as I am able to find a meter. I did take out but they have an upper dining area along with a good sized bathroom (Vs the tiny dingy ones you often find at smaller places). Food was really good and some of the better Pupusas I have had in the city and I have tried a bunch, especially the other big names. I saw a bunch of people ordering plates of food with rice, beans and various meats / stews which looked really good. Staff were very friendly as well. I will definitely be back to try the Tamales, try a plate and get some pupusas as well.
