I stopped by Al Chile with a friend recently and tried three of their tacos along with a hibiscus drink. The hibiscus drink was flavorful and not too sweet. Carnitas Taco: This was my personal favorite! The carnitas had a delicious, crispy texture. The meat itself was juicy, tender, and flavorful. Came here for a snack and ordered the carne asada fries. It was a slow night but it took longer than expected for the fries to come out and when it did....so underwhelming and disappointing. Fries tasted like they fried stale fries to make them crispy again. There was barely any cheese, the carne asada tasted old and dry, and you're not given any salsa unless you ask for it (only small containers available). You'd think it would be hard to mess up carne asada fries but anything is possible! Even though the fries were disappointing, I'd still like to return one day to try the pupusas. read more

The only negatives - the two salsas provided with the chips, not a great flavor, but whatever, the guac more than makes up for that. We came for a late lunch on Saturday and decided to try a pupusa (the one with meat and cheese beans) and their appetizer enchiladas to share. You order first and then grab seating. Really solid local spot specializing in El Salvadorian food (and tacos too haha). The atmosphere is very casual and a good choice for any time of the day. You order at the counter and they will serve you if you choose to eat there. We were really impressed with the yucca fries. Very delicious, and it satiated our yuca frita craving from when we went to Costa Rica recently. I had the al pastor and fish tacos which I thought were okay. I enjoyed the fish taco the most. Tried the quesabirrias and they were ok. The Salvadorian empanada dessert was interesting. I believe traditional Salvadoran Empanadas de Leche are sweet, golden-fried plantain pastries filled with a warm vanilla custard known as leche poleada. I also tried the chilaquiles with red salsa and was a bit disappointed. Their chips are good on their own, but the chilaquiles were all soggy. It looked like a lot of chips too. Might just be my preference, but I would like some crunch / texture. read more

The 2 meat super burrito - carnitas and chicken were explosive flavor combos and their large carne asada taco was a real champion. Al Chile's barely out of diapers at four months old, but it's already rocking five-star reviews like a boss. I hate to admit when I've never even heard of a place, but it makes me glad that I have friends all over the city who have carved out their favorite spots. I met a good buddy of mine for lunch and I am already looking for excuses to come back. It ended up being three of us and so we got a bunch of things and shared them, though for me, the highlight was probably the revuelta pupusa. I love anything encased in some kind of dough, but the pork in this bad boy was as good as any I've ever had. California burrito was also excellent, probably my top 5 in the city, which is higher praise than it might sound, because I could probably list off a top 20 pretty quickly. Of all we tried, the torta might have come in last place, but not because it was bad, the others were just SO good. I would totally get a torta here and be happy. I get the feeling, though, that you could probably order anything and end up pretty happy with it. Simple place, great staff, I really can't say enough about the experience. read more

Ordered a total of 4 pupusas and dessert empanadas (not knowing what to expect with the empanadas). Waited about 30 minutes. 10 minute drive home and food was still warm. My bean and cheese pupusa did not have any cheese, bummer. The other pupusas would have been better with more cheese. There was no "cheese stretch". The green sauce was thin, not much flavor. Curtido and red sauce were decent. Overall, passable. Would return for the pupusas but will pass on the empanadas next time (not the pastry I'd thought and not much flavor). read more

When I get super burritos in SF I usually have to 2 hand hold the monster that is a super burrito. For close to $20 the first bar that I need from a super burrito is it being the size of my head. Unfortunately it was tiny and none of the ingredients were warm (I ate there). Staff is great tho I was just hoping for a bomb big ahh super burrito steaming from the inside after my first bite but I got a 1/5 tiny not so super burrito that was just as warm as if I door-dashed it from 45 minutes away. . I appreciate their honesty and since none of the Yelpers ever reviewed it, I passed. Ordered a fish taco and bean w/cheese papusa. I kept hearing the microwave going off during my 15 minute stay. Also ordered a side of guacamole. Nothing I had was anything special and the restaurant wouldn't survive in the Mission. Side note, I'm not a fan of papusas.
