Plato Papusa - bean and cheese, beef and cheese

My new favorite go to for Papusas! And that's saying a lot considering how many options we have here in the city! Give them a chance, you won't regret it!

Estrellita's Snacks is a new restaurant that has recently opened in the Tenderloin area. The service is great, we arrived around 4:45pm after work and even though they close at 5pm they took us in, got us seated, the owner herself took our order. The food tastes great. The agua frescas were not too sweet n had that fresh taste from real fruit that I love. We ended up ordering pupusas, a side of yucca frita and a tlayuda istmenas and everything had good taste. I am full Salvadoran, and I love to taste pupusas from various restaurants :) Strellita's pupusas were great they passed the test. I also loved the Oaxacan cheese on the tlayuda istmenan dish, this was my first time trying it. Estrellita's snacks is a great place to visit for Salvadoran and Oaxacan dishes. A chill place to enjoy Central American dishes with friends or family. It was definitely a good experience.

I've tried this place three times and have been unimpressed each time. The first time, I ordered a pupusa from their stand at the farmers market, which was decent. Later, I noticed they opened a new location on Ellis Street, so I decided to give them another try. I ordered a pupusa again, but this time it was dry with minimal cheese. On my third and final visit, I ordered the carne asada plate for $30! The price is outrageous considering the quality and portion size. The carne asada was so dry/overcooked I had to tear it apart with my fingers because the knife couldn't cut through it. They provided a very small portion of black beans (picture posted), and the rice was dry and lacked flavor. Overall, I was disappointed and won't be returning.

Since the shelter orders took place, I haven't been able to visit farmer's market at UN Plaza on Wednesdays. So I was ecstatic to find out that they're available 5 days a week! They're located at the new La Cocina Municipal Marketplace. This food hall is only taking take-out orders. So you can order online for pick up. I was surprised that the prices are similar, if not the same, as their stand at farmer's market. But there are plates available. I got the plato de pupusas, which comes with 2 pupusas of your choice, rice/beans, plantains, crema, salsa, and curtido. At farmer's market, you have the option of getting a spicier salsa, but not at this location. Also, the amount of curtido you get is smaller than the farmer's market location. I think it's the perfect amount for me, but I know some curtido lovers out there that would need the small bag they give out at farmers market. For $18 total (including tip), it was a big meal for me. I powered through the 2 pupusas, but I couldn't finish the rice and plantains. They're gonna be a good snack later. The quality of food is the same as their stand, which is unsurprising because after years of getting pupusas from them, not one has disappointed me. I got the mushroom and cheese (my favorite) and the revuelta (pork and cheese). Both were delicious. I've never had the rice before, and it was good too. I love plantains, so it was like a nice dessert. SF Restaurant Week starts tomorrow (April 9, 2021), and they are participating. So if you haven't had their pupusas, then this would be a good time to check them out. I'm definitely coming back here again!

Estrellita's is my go-to at La Cocina! I'm so sad they won't be at this location much longer. I love their jalapeño and cheese papusas and all the staff are so nice!

Vegan Pupusas- I couldnt wait to take a bite :)

I had all but given up my search for vegan pupusas when Estrellita's blessed me with their deliciousness! I work in The Presidio and stumbled across their tent last week as part of the Tunnel Tops food pop-up. After trying one of their tasty vegan pupusas, I made sure they would be back this week and ordered three this time! They also have maracuya agua fresca, my absolute favorite. I happy danced all the way back to work today thanks to them. They also have tamales and different kinds of fried chips, will need to try those soon! They mentioned they have a stall at the La Cocina food hall downtown as well.

Other spots I'm eating masa. Unlike many places that serve greasy pupusas, these are nicely made and not greasy. We usually order takeout since the dining area is small unless you go early. Parking can be a headache, but I've always managed to snag a spot (knock on wood). The staff are friendly, and we always leave full and happy!

I'd give them about a 3.5 out of 5. On a good day, they come out with that perfect golden-brown finish. On a bad day, they look and taste undercooked to the point where I've had to throw them back on the stove at home just to make them edible. The ambiance doesn't do much to help. It's your typical Mission-style Latin restaurant, kind of sticky and worn-in, but in a way where you can't quite tell if it's part of the aesthetic or just a lack of upkeep. Now, let's get into why this leans closer to a one-star experience. The staff consistently come off like they'd rather be anywhere else. They don't smile and often come across as rude. Timing is basically a suggestion here. If you place a takeout order, plan well ahead, at least 45 to 60 minutes before pickup. Every single time I've called, I've been told 25 to 30 minutes, only to arrive and wait another 15 to 20 minutes. Without fail. And in a neighborhood where parking is already a headache, with limited meters and tight timing, you'll feel that delay. Your patience will absolutely be tested. Don't say I didn't warn you. Update: Today's order included a hit inside the cheese mixture of the Pupusas. Disgusting.

I got the bean and cheese and the cheese and jalapeño and both were absolute flavor bombs. The outside had that perfect golden crisp while the inside was warm, soft, and packed with cheesy goodness. That homemade taste hits like comfort food poetry -- the kind that makes you pause mid-bite and just appreciate the moment. Each pupusa felt like a little edible hug straight from someone's family kitchen. This place is a true mom and pop gold mine tucked right into the Mission. The people here are so friendly and so hospitable it honestly felt like I walked into my grandparents' house for Sunday dinner. Warm smiles, welcoming energy, and food made with the kind of care you can taste in every bite. The restaurant itself is clean, organized, and full of that authentic neighborhood charm. Nothing flashy, just honest food that speaks for itself -- and trust me, it speaks loud. Now this is the Mission District so parking is basically a city sport. Park wherever you can and then walk, jog, or straight up power march to this place. Because once those pupusas hit the table, the smell alone will have you feeling like you struck culinary gold. The food here isn't just good... it's the kind of good that lingers in your memory long after the plate is empty. And when I'm back in the city, best believe I'll be following that pupusa trail right back here again.
