Huevos rancheros
Brittney P.

The food here is super good! It's a great breakfast/lunch or dinner spot. Gotta love the huevos rancheros and the atol de elote. Came back from El Salvador craving some good eats and this hit the spot.

Upon visiting a body shop across the street. Came in for a quick bite for lunch. Upon looking at the menu was unable to decided amongst all the great items listed. I landed on a burrito and papusas. Both dishes were amazing and highly recommend.

Pollo and chicharon papusas, Sopa de Mariscos

Nice little El Salvadoran spot. Always has people inside, but never too busy. We had two pupusas, pollo and chicharon, and the sopa de marisco. The latter came with two thick soft corn tortillas (maybe that's El Salvador style?). Both had really good portions for the price. Good for when you want to switch it up from balompi down the block. We'll likely go back and try more stuff on the menu.

I always try to keep my standard places to go to get pupusas in San Francisco. Although, I have a few places I frequently go for my pupusas I just added Montecristo to my the list. The pupusas were so delicious. Great meal.

The food was ok, maybe a little of bit of more sazón would be fantastic, I drank chocolate and it didn't taste so good, you can make it at home better. The attention can be better, they don't treat you as well as Latin culture usually do.

Pupusas and Platano Frito with frijoles y crema.

Recently moved in the neighborhood and wanted to check out the local digs. Along Mission there are 3 or 4 Salvadorean restaurants within a 3 blocks of each other. I grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by Salvadorean restaurants so this brought a sense of familiarity. That said, I'd been to Balompie (down the street) in the past and it was just okay. Montecristo seemed to get a lot of love on Yelp so I figured why not. The place was pretty chill, a few families and a couple people who'd maybe just gotten off of work. Clearly this was a place they frequented and loved. Ordered a couple different pupusas (one chicken and one pork) as well as a plate of platano frito with crema and black beans. And what can I say except, this might be my favorite Salvadorean spot! The platano frito was especially memorable, it had a nice crisp to it and it paired perfect with the crema and frijoles. The pupusas were great as well, and the curtido was abundant. Can't wait to come back and try their other plates!

My families favorite pupuseria. However, one time the curtido was a tad bit salty but since then no issues and the best horchata in town!!!!

Unlike many places that serve greasy pupusas, these are nicely made and not greasy. We usually order takeout since the dining area is small unless you go early. Parking can be a headache, but I've always managed to snag a spot (knock on wood). The staff are friendly, and we always leave full and happy!

I'd give them about a 3.5 out of 5. On a good day, they come out with that perfect golden-brown finish. On a bad day, they look and taste undercooked to the point where I've had to throw them back on the stove at home just to make them edible. The ambiance doesn't do much to help. It's your typical Mission-style Latin restaurant, kind of sticky and worn-in, but in a way where you can't quite tell if it's part of the aesthetic or just a lack of upkeep. Now, let's get into why this leans closer to a one-star experience. The staff consistently come off like they'd rather be anywhere else. They don't smile and often come across as rude. Timing is basically a suggestion here. If you place a takeout order, plan well ahead, at least 45 to 60 minutes before pickup. Every single time I've called, I've been told 25 to 30 minutes, only to arrive and wait another 15 to 20 minutes. Without fail. And in a neighborhood where parking is already a headache, with limited meters and tight timing, you'll feel that delay. Your patience will absolutely be tested. Don't say I didn't warn you. Update: Today's order included a hit inside the cheese mixture of the Pupusas. Disgusting.

My first visit there I wasn't sold on their pupusas but when their brick and mortar location here opened up I went again to see how it was since I love pupusas and now they are in my regular rotation. The space is big and service is friendly with the free coffee (which I don't actually drink since I'm not a coffee guy). While it's not the fastest, the food is terrific so I am fine waiting for my delicious pupusas! I usually get the pork, bean and cheese pupusas which are really good but mixed it up last time and got the jalapeno and cheese ones but felt like there wasn't quite enough cheese in those so I'll prob just go back to the pork, bean and cheese ones since they seem more balanced. I got the bean and cheese and the cheese and jalapeño and both were absolute flavor bombs. The outside had that perfect golden crisp while the inside was warm, soft, and packed with cheesy goodness. That homemade taste hits like comfort food poetry -- the kind that makes you pause mid-bite and just appreciate the moment. Each pupusa felt like a little edible hug straight from someone's family kitchen. This place is a true mom and pop gold mine tucked right into the Mission. The people here are so friendly and so hospitable it honestly felt like I walked into my grandparents' house for Sunday dinner. Warm smiles, welcoming energy, and food made with the kind of care you can taste in every bite. The restaurant itself is clean, organized, and full of that authentic neighborhood charm. Nothing flashy, just honest food that speaks for itself -- and trust me, it speaks loud. Now this is the Mission District so parking is basically a city sport. The food here isn't just good... it's the kind of good that lingers in your memory long after the plate is empty.
