We went with some friends for dinner the other night. As usual the fare was fresh Mexican - the closest thing we have found to the Mexican food we get when we go to San Diego. Tacos are on the spicy side, so if you don't like that type of thing, I'd steer clear. So I told the young lady what my order was and she said it would be a few minutes more. Ok cool. I was pleasantly surprised with how good this place was. I've been twice and the service both times was seriously stellar and they were different people. The dining room has a casual feel but the bar area is more lively with great colors, traditional music and a TV. There are two things that I judge a Mexican restaurant by: chips and salsa and margaritas. The chips and salsa here is like out of this world good. It's made daily in house and you can tell because based on how hot the chiles were that they got, the heat of the salsa varies. This is great. The texture is perfect as well. Their regular margarita is made fresh right in front of you. It's not the best I've ever had (Mia's Cantina) but definitely above average. I also tried the Al Chile and it's a very interesting flavor combination. To be honest, I didn't get spice, which I did want but the pineapple is pretty strong making it tropical tasting. I don't understand the reviews of people wanting rice and beans with everything. Whenever I got to a Mexican restaurant, I fill up on so much chips and salsa and perhaps guac and then a meal comes and it's three tacos plus rice and beans! I value quality over quantity and having rice and beans and other sides ala carte allows you to control the size of the meal as well. Plus, the price point is super inexpensive as well despite their food actually being made in house so if you really want that much food, then just order rice and beans on the side. One thing that wasn't as successful for me was the shrimp ceviche. I love ceviche but this one had a few flaws. Firstly, the portion was far too large. I did like that the shrimp were chopped up as opposed to serving them whole, but the whole dish lacked balance. I prefer a good amount of onion, cilantro and jalapeno in my ceviche and this was just eating a huge bowl of shrimp for the most part. I also didn't get any citrus so I'm wondering if the shrimp were actually cooked instead of marinated. It still tasted fresh but just didn't have as much flavors as I would have liked. The steak tacos were super tasty though. One day I went in for lunch and they had lunch specials, most of which included rice and beans for all those who like eating 3000 calorie meals. I opted for the flautas, which were supposed to be two but came with three. Again, portion a bit too large but WOW! These were literally the best flautas I've ever had. I don't know why they're not on the regular menu. They were extremely crispy even though they had sauce covering them. It was like a magic trick! The chicken inside was tender and flavorful. My small complaint was that the verde sauce could have used some more flavor, perhaps some spice. But overall these were outstanding. This is one of the only places that I would say the steak tacos are better than the al pastor. I also tried the refried beans and they were pretty standard. The quesadillas are also not my favorite. I like the size for an appetizer and that they come with guac on the side but it was just chicken and cheese and no pico or grilled onions or peppers on the inside. I like a bit more going on in my quesadillas personally. The menu is a bit basic but maybe as they are open for longer, they will expand it some. read more

Al Chile is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. Service is consistently good. The chips guacamole is outstanding and difficult to stop eating. The margaritas and the Sangria swirl are fantastic. My girlfriend loves the tacos that the staff are able to make vegetarian for her. I'm a fan of both their tacos (steak, chicken, pastor, barbacoa) and their burritos. This place was amazing! We went to check it out since they have $2 tacos on Tuesdays. This special applies to their steak, pollo, and pastor tacos. My husband and I each ordered 2 to start(he got 2 pollo, I got 1 pollo and 1 pastor) and wow they were amazing!!! We ended up ordering 4 more pollo tacos to go so we could have some for later in our hotel!! My first time in and I carried out on $2 taco tuesday. This is righr behind my house and I'd never been. I order 2 pastor and 2 chicken tacos. Both were really flavorful and packed with meat. A big thing for me in Mexican Restaurants is the chips and salsa. I love the home made thin warm chips that are served and chunky tasty salsa is my favorite. The chips and salsa here rated 1 star. The salsa wasn't that good and the chips seemed to be right out of a bag. Now to the good stuff. I had the steak burrito and it was probably the best burrito I've ever had. Great.
