17-year old's first scuba experience was wonderful with Akumal Dive Shop
Rebecca F.

Akumal Dive Shop earned my highest recommendation and vote of confidence. My daughter and my brother took the Scuba Discovery course at Akumal Dive Shop today. The aim of this class is for people who have never scuba dived before to try it so they can decide whether they would like to pursue a diving certification. The class starts with an instructional video, then the dive instructor provides in-person instruction at the dive shop, then they put on all of the equipment they learned about. Then they go into a shallow roped off area in the ocean and practice with the equipment and techniques under water. Then they return to the dive shop and make any adjustments to their equipment. And finally they board a boat and go out for their first real dive at 12m/40ft, which lasts about 30 minutes. We were completely impressed with Akumal Dive Shop, the personnel, and this course. First, since my daughter is only 17, I wanted to hang around for her class to make sure she was totally comfortable. The dive shop happily accommodated us. The dive instructor, Fido, was a wonderful instructor. He is a world-class instructor and we were very confident in his knowledge and abilities. He speaks English, French, Italian, and Spanish fluently and he is a very refined gentleman. We loved everyone we interacted with at Akumal Dive Shop. They were all kind and helpful to our family. A few days earlier we went on their "snorkeling with sea turtles" trip and that was great too. But it was Fido and the professionalism of the dive program that really made us feel that Akumal Dive Shop is a first class operation. My daughter benefited enormously from the class and learned a ton. She decided to skip the last step and not do the dive from the boat today. There was nothing that the instructor or dive shop could have said or done, because she's always slower to adopt new things. She just has a trepidatious personality. We told her that would be a fine choice before the program even started. Using her regulator and breathing underwater was a great experience for her, so even though she opted out of going for the real dive off the boat with her uncle and the other divers, she loved the program and she thought Fido was the best. The dive shop tried to offer us a partial refund or another attempt at a different dive for her on a different day during our visit to Akumal, because they were trying to compensate us. We refused their generous offer, because we felt that we received the full value of their program and she truly loved it. They definitely did not owe us anything. The only reason I'm mentioning this is because I want to make it known that these are wonderful people who operate their business with integrity, generosity, and compassion.

I showed up at this dive shop because of the good reviews. If you're an inexperienced diver and you're used to driving in a fairly busy, impersonal organization this place will suit you fine. They follow all the protocols for dive safety. I found it lacked a certain warmth and customer satisfaction that I've seen at other dive operations. I wasn't all that impressed. Not that helpful or clear, a bit disorganized. Even though they go with small groups it's still too many people on the small boat. I probably wouldn't live with them again.

Very pleased with this dive shop! Staff is great and super knowledgeable! We took our certifications there and never have I felt more comfortable in the water. Dove open water and many cenotes for fun too! Every dive was a great new experience, each better than the previous! Never had a weight issue! Their recommendations were amazing! Going back soon again for more certifications and fun!

Diego was amazing! We went snorkeling yesterday here and he helped us to see several turtles which was obviously the goal here. He even showed us a sting ray and took great photos on his Go Pro of us and what we saw which was much better than the pics I got with my phone with plastic case over it. My phone was not working under water really . Last night he sent us the photos he took though. He really went above and beyond!

Wow! Can diving get any better than this? I visited Akumal Dive Shop for a refresher course before diving on the reef, since it had been a few years since my last dive. My divemaster, Adiel, was funny, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Both of my dives with him were excellent, and he was extremely talented at pointing out turtles, fish, invertebrates, and other interesting life on the reef. Prices were very fair, one morning I came as a walk-in and paid about $65 for a one hour dive and full equipment rental. It's about $40 if you already have your own equipment. My one criticism is the lack of organization when it comes to booking. I tried a few times to book in advance, and my reservations were always lost. At least they are very flexible and got me on the dive boats the same day anyways, even during a relatively busy part of the season in January.

Had a decent experience with their parasailing trip this past week on our Cancun trip. While it is…read morea bit pricey (around $85/head after tips and entry fee), I think that the experience is worth it. The boat ride out was pretty smooth, and although the experience started like 10-15 minutes late, the captain made sure that we got to spend our 10-15 minutes in the air. We initially tried booking the experience through Pelago on google maps and wow was that a disaster. Even though it was a better deal through that initial booking, for some reason, Pelago couldn't process the booking in time for our reservation and thus we had to cancel and book in person (which cost like $5 more per person). The customer service is pretty decent though, which made up for that issue. The $50 photo offerings were kind of weird though. They took so many photos of our party when were in the air and on the boat and the upsell on them is decently on the steeper side. Recommend taking your own photos or asking other people on the ship not in your party (if there are any) to take them for you (picture swap!)

We went on a catamaran trip to Isla Mujeres that we signed up for at our hotel. The communication…read morewas poor from the beginning. They were 15+ min late picking us up only to wait for 1+ hours at the dock for the catamaran. It was advertised as a catamaran, snorkel, island adventure, and then an exclusive beach club. Snorkeling was amazing but equipment was cheap and not enough time to do it. The "exclusive" beach club was not nice at all. Food was mediocre at best and felt like we were eating at a mess hall. Basically this was a booze cruise, which is great for some, but it was not sold to us as such and it was a totally disappointing experience. It felt like a floating frat party with cheap alcohol and workers pouring tequila down teenagers throats.
