Swim in the warm Caribbean Sea with sea turtles in the wild. The turtles are attracted to this area because of the fairly shallow sea grass field at Akumal beach. Located close to the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum (also a Mexican Federal Park) and South of Playa del Carmen, you can swim with Green, Hawksbill and Loggerhead sea turtles.
If you are looking for a low cost adventure, you ride the bus which travels north and south along the main highway ("The Colectivo"). Service is fairly regular and the cost is around US $5.00 per person. You can also get there by taxi (about US $20) or with an organized tour group. For a two hour adventure the cost is approximately US $50 but it includes a knowledgeable guide, coach transportation, good quality snorkeling equipment, and cold bottled water. If you do not have your own snorkel equipment and chose to not join a group tour, you will need to rent some from one of the local dive shops. The cost is approximately US $20.00.
Our best tip is to arrive early. Don't make the mistake of arriving at Akumal after midday because it can become very crowded, you will have limited visibility, and the afternoon sun can get very warm. Be sure to give the sea turtles lots of space - especially when they come to the surface for some air. It is actually illegal to touch the sea turtles and any other part of the Meso American Coral Reef and wildlife. read more
