I prefer not to buy Fish online and Paul will work hard to get the specialty items i am looking for. I am grateful they are in the area! Thanks again to the staff at Tropics

Honestly I don't know where to start with my experience here…read more I've been here only once and that was enough to ruin my experience. As I was looking at the fishes I noticed that the tanks were filthy. I told the staff and they lied to my face telling me they cleaned the tank recently. I swear if you could touch the inside of the tank your finger would be covered in algae. I asked about clown fish and they were obviously over charging me for the fishes, the tanks, equipment, and other items. I should have know that considering how filthy the inside of the shop was. The staff here obviously didn't care too much about this place since all they did was just pretend to clean the area they were at. Hell there was so much tripping hazards on the floor that it felt like Saw puzzle. I swear a homeless person can come in the front door and immediately walk away due to the condition of this place. I spent too much money here for stuff to break as well as my fish being incredibly sick. 1 star is still too high for this review

Some of them looked like they were struggling to swim and there was even a skeleton which indicates to me that the fish had been dead for a while. I've honestly never seen so many dead fish in tank in my life, even Petco and PetSmart seems better compared to this. Prices were also high, especially for shrimp. They were charging $15/caridina shrimp. Some of the tanks seemed to have mislabeled fish or seemed incredibly overstocked. I understand that they may view the tanks as temporary holding tanks but it was still quite a lot of fish in some small tanks. I would recommend checking out other fish stores in the area before heading over here.

I can not recommend this store enough!!!…read more Clear Water Aquarium is an amazing fish store with the most knowledgeable staff out there. I have been to various fishstores around the bay, but after finding this gem last year, I have been making the drive from Sonoma County ever since. I have been buying plants for my 14 gallon betta tank which continue to flourish. I recently went back with my boyfriend and we were assisted by Erik. Erik was the coolest guy ever and helped us out with so much. We found ways to decorate my boyfriend's 60 gallon that has his albino oscar, as well as some buddies for him. We are so happy with our purchases and can not thank Erik enough!!

Unfortunately after adding it to my tank it became a little terror and started attacking my bottom feeders, so I bagged it up and took it back. They were super understanding and offered to acclimate it with other fish for me. I come here for all of my aquascaping needs, without question. They are nice and knowledgeable, and can special order of you need it. They also obtain many of they animals from local breeders. So you can say that your new pet is born and raised in Santa Cruz! I would encourage anyone to give them your business instead of Petco or Amazon. 6* so grateful that we have a good LFS in town!

Was super excited to come check this place out but upon entry was disappointed. It's very cluttery,…read morestuff stacked everywhere. The place smelled of reptile poop, the fish tanks were hella dirty with multiple tanks having dead and sick looking fish in them. The guy there got upset with me looking at and touching some containers. I brushed it off and proceeded to ask if he had tarantulas he sed yes and said he had them in the back. He began talking about his family and when a moment opened up I asked what kind of tarantulas he had (That was my main reason for being there) and he sed I can't tell or show you unless I've known you for 6 or more months?!! Like wth? Are you trying to make sales or not? The photos on this page are from years ago it looks nothing like this more cluttered and smelly. Every tank need attention and to have some cleaning done. He began saying it's a family shop but there's no employees, just one person who super vague rude and just gives off an all about weird vibe. I went in to hopefully come back with a tarantula or 5, and left disappointed and empty handed. I even had to stop and ask my friend if I was tripping out and they agreed with me that the place was unkept and the person was oddly weird and vague. My recommendation is ...Don't bother.

Update 3/12/2026: I…read morerecently bought a house in San Jose that came with a pond. Unfortunately the previous owner had passed away and left no instructions, so I had absolutely no idea where to start. I've never had a pond before and knew nothing about how to maintain one. I remember having a great experience with Aqua lab back in 2016 so I called them back up and Kent was incredibly helpful from the start. He took the time to walk me through everything and explain how the system works without ever making me feel dumb for asking very basic questions. We decided to do a one-time deep cleaning to restore the pond. Before the scheduled cleaning, Kent stopped by to check out the system and figure out what actually needed to be done. He ended up fixing a broken part, doing a full deep clean of the pond and the filter/skimmer, and adding beneficial water additives. Since I live about 3 hours away, he kept me updated throughout the process with photos and messages, which I really appreciated. He even left me some pond tools to use and offered to come back another time, at no extra charge, when I'm at the house so he can walk me through the system in person and show me how to do the regular monthly maintenance myself (or help with that if I decide I'd rather have him handle it). His pricing was very fair and actually came in lower than other local shops I contacted. Overall just a really great experience. I've attached before and after photos of the pond. Highly recommend Aqua Lab and working with Kent. What a great guy!

Planted tanks start up cost can very costly. Rimless tank, aquasoil. Good duel stage co2 regulator, anf There are equipment that they have that isn't found in big chain store. You're paying quality stuff. I been in fish hobby for 10+ years with African Cichlids, Rare Turtles, and koi ponds, but never tried high tech planted aquarium. High tech Aquarium was quite of challenge for me and aqua lab aquaria guided me to finally built my ideal setup. I no longer have room in my aquarium for plants but this is my favorite store for planted stuff. Another bonus is that they are only store to sell co2.
