I love South Paterson. No, really, there is no single better place anywhere I can think of where you can find distinct cuisines from all over the Islamic world (Indonesia excluded; sorry, Indonesia) and be able to taste them all and experience how distinct Syrian lebni is from Saudi or Turkish lebni. That's just one example. The kebab? Oh man. You could go to five or six restaurants and order kefte kebab and have five or six distinct preparations. Sadly, I don't get to go to South Paterson as often as I used to when I lived in Lyndhurst. I was over at Corrado's for some homebrew supplies and stopped at Ak Market - my mom goes there all the time for their kebabs. She raved about them so much, I figure I'd surprise my overworked physics-teacher wife with a nice change of pace from taco night, round 2, last night. So there's no parking other than the street for Ak Market, but that's OK - because when you go in to this shiny clean example of any good market, you can pretty much find everything. I saw they had their own dried sausage sitting across from the olive bar, which looked about ten times fresher (and probably at least half as expensive) than anything out there. Tons of Turkish food stuffs. My objective, though: kebab. Aside from a staggering array of meats and parts (there were lamb brains. I can't speak for them myself but if you ever need a brain the size of a moderate sized human fist, you can find them at Ak Market) they had a bunch of fresh cheeses at one far end, and three different kebabs at one other end. I saw kefte on skewers, which is what I opted for, and two other kinds - one that looked a little like kibbe and one that looked like a chicken kefte. They come in trays; the kefte was $4.99/lb, one tray ran about $11. Get the grill up to heat on high, turn down to medium, and grill on each side for about 45-60 seconds. They're perfectly done, juicy, and tasty. Just watch that grill! No, seriously, stay close! They smoke up wonderfully, lots of fats dripping out and searing up, but you don't want to overcook 'em. There's a Syrian grocery back up on Main that I went to, and they're probably the only good competitor. I'm going to have to make an excuse to go get more homebrew supplies so I can check out that market, as well as Nablus Sweets if I haven't done so already. Don't be afraid that it has Paterson in the name; South Paterson is a world apart from the bad parts of the regular Paterson. read more

Bought 2 pks of chicken thigh. After I got home, I took them out from the bags to find that one of the meat packs was spoiled & smelled disgusting. I called them and spoke with Ibrahim who tried to explain how this was just a one time occurrence and that because of my complaining, he would just give us another pack on my next visit. It's just as simple as that for him; but what he's not understanding are the consequences of feeding my kids this rotten chicken just one time. What an unexpected pleasure this was. After spending years and years working in istanbul, I find myself back in the USA. First priority was to find a place where I could get a few turkish items I had come accustomed to. A few??? My God, they dropped an entire Migros grocery store from istanbul into this eastern jersey town. It has everything! All the meat, all the cheese, all the bread, all the sweets, all the canned goods. And as you shop, you are listening to TRT radyo beamed in from Ankara. Honestly, if they don't have it, you don't need it! I only wish this place was a little closer. The service is amazing, and the man that works there (presumably the owner) knows where literally everything is located, and will happily lead you to it. He is so polite, I often see him carrying customers bags to their cars. This place is amazing, all the specialty Turkish items you could possibly want. They sell cigarettes, and also have a substantial dry goods section. Really is always a very pleasant shopping experience. The order got shipped within a couple of hours from purchase (even though I made a typo in my CC number, and they had to call me to correct it). The food is yummy , it taste fresh and well done , I like to go there with my friends because we do not need to wait so much for food , also I like the fish aquarium there . The manager is very nice , he likes to give his customers a free treats every while :) go now ... In addition the prices are fair. Just the large tea pots is expensive comparing to the meals prices . Coming from a Turkish background, I'd hate to belittle my own people. I purchased about 15 pounds of "Halal" meat from Ak Market. Took the meat home, and I come to find out that the meat contains food coloring in it. Not to mention, the ground beef contained an unbearable stench when I opened the packaging. I show up to discuss this matter at Ak Market, and I was treated with an intolerable manner of disrespect. The way they handled a customer service issue was tragic. I did not want to ruin anyones reputation by doing nor saying something to criticize a place of business, but when something is considered "Halal" it absolutely cannot contain any type of food coloring, additive, or anything excess. Solely Halal cut meat. Therefore, I felt like I needed to reach out to consumers who would like to be informed and have an idea of Ak Markets products, services, and staff. I called them to let them know I was concerned about the food not being edible (Several of the items were perishable and were not edible by the time I received them). They assured me that if I accepted the package they would resend me all the perishable items at no cost to me. Well, I have emailed them. This place announces they close at 10pm. I came here at 8:30 pm to meet with a friend. I was given the menu and started reading it. I was told if I wanted to order from the kitchen I should do it soon because the kitchen would be closed in half an hour. I said I wasn't going to order food, just desserts. At 9:15 they brought the check and told me they were closing because they had no customers. No wonder why they don't. They treat you as if they don't want you there. As a Turkish person I am ashamed that this website is still in business and giving people the wrong impression how Turks do business. My package did not arrive for two weeks and when it came, of course, all the stuff I bought were gone bad.. They have no respect to customers and their customer representatives are utterly rude. I have chosen them due to their low prices but they made sure that this was also my last business with them.. I strongly discourage all my friends from using them.
