Richmond Hill Off Leash Dog Area - Love the timber bark covered surface in the small dog area

I think my dog will definitely give Richmond Hill Off Leash Dog Area a 5+ stars!…read more Richmond Hill off Leash Dog Area, a fenced 3/4 hectare site, is located in Ward 4 on Town-owned open space lands south of Tower Hill Road and just west of Yonge Street. It is contained by a 1.5 m tall chain link fence with a separate small dog area and a double-gated entry and exit area. I really appreciate the stated rules of using the park: all male dogs have to be neutered, no female dogs in heat and no children under 12 years old! The small dog area is for dogs that are under 12 lbs and it is well maintained. My dog had so much fun exploring the area which are lined with wood pieces and played with dogs that are friendly like he is!! The other area where the bigger dogs roamed is huge.... hilly and they can all run wild and explore!! I wish there are more off leash dog park like this, where dogs can enjoy the open area and socialize with others just like children!

Not only is the general fenced off area nice and spacious, but there are lots of hills for the dogs to run around through and picnic tables for the humans to sit at. There is another gated area for smaller dogs as well. I visited on a Sunday afternoon and there was a fair amount of people with their furry friends (maybe around ~10 dogs). Everyone was super friendly! This is definitely a great park for you and your dog if you live close to the Richmond Hill area. You will certainly find me and my little boston terrier back here soon! :)

We went around 10 am on a weekday and were pleasantly surprised that there were about 3 other dogs there! Our dog got very muddy - but fear not right around the corner is pet valu where they have a self serve dog wash! I personally liked the terrain - there were some hills and areas that weren't flat. It gave my dog more of a workout. Pretty big, but this is my first experience with a Durham dog park. Overall suitable, I would go again!

It was a while coming, but Whitby now has two operational, official off leash dog parks…read more The one that my pooch is most familiar with is the north one. However, on Saturday morning, we tried the south park. It is a securely fenced off portion of a field which encloses a knoll, approximately 100 x 100 yards, One quarter of it is subdivided for small dogs. There are a few rocks and picnic tables to give the area some visual interest. There is free parking, and free poop bags and a disposal container. Thanks to Royal Canin, who are a sponsor. On that day, the weather was clear and sunny, and the park was well attended. Although there are approximately 20 parking spots, we found only one spot open, and were pleased to have it. We saw two or three dog owners leaving the site on foot, pooches on lead - presumably they live in the subdivisions south of Victoria Street. There are lots of rules, which are posted on site, and on the Town website. http://www.whitby.ca/en/discoverwhitby/offleashdogparks.asp We have seen it in winter conditions only. The snow is packed down, indicating that the park is being heavily used, but not overused to the point that ice is forming to a dangerous extent. We saw no small dogs, but there were some placid looking large sporting dogs in the small dog run - not sure what that was about. In the main paddock, there we at least two dozen dogs running and gambolling in groups, having a ton of fun. It could have been a lot worse, but there were a couple of dozen pooh bombs visible in the snow, so not everyone has been picking up after Rover. During the public consultations, this is one of the gloom and doom predictions of the naysayers that did not want dog parks to happen. Unfortunately dog pooh is one of the vectors for serious dog diseases, so it important that this be dealt with. Picking it up promptly is beyond the resources of the Town, so regular users of this new park are going to have to deal with it - likely with a combination of peer pressure and volunteer pooper scoopers.

We have seen tracks in the small dog area, but no dogs. That may change when the good weather arrives, as even wee doggies like a romp. We have been there on some occasions when we had the place to ourselves. But it is more fun when the dogs have new friends to run and play with. A thorough search might detect the odd pooh bomb here or there, especially when the snow is thawing. However it is apparent that the bulk of the dog handlers are picking up after Rover. Adjacent to the park are some walking trails which are not off leash.

This dog park is terrible. It is fenced in, which might be great for some owners however it is so…read moresmall that "walking" your dog is impossible. I've walked dogs for 15 years and from experience i can tell you dogs left to play on their own in a group with no where to go start to get territorial and fighting ensues. When dogs can walk and play it encourages their instinct which is "the chase". Also this park offers zero shade and because it's so small it becomes a mud pit fast in the summer. Take the extra drive and go to the harmony creek off leash on Oshawa. It's amazing!
