From my son who is a Senior at Sequoia HS: At first I didn't know if I wanted a college counselor at my mom's request but Ryan exceeded all my expectations and I don't regret a thing. I was lost during the beginning of my senior year and Ryan guided me through everything. Making a college list to start and explaining the college process, the different portals, and of course the supplementals. This was just the start. From working with Ryan I was already able to get comfortable with the college apps process and the timeline which would leave me with the least amount of stress. College apps is a stressful time and experience but he helps you throughout and ensures that you will meet every deadline. On top of all that is his help on your essays. He first helps explain the prompt and brainstorms various ideas with you. He revises and looks over every essay, giving edits and feedback from an experienced perspective. He helps you boost your activities list to make sure it's the best it can be, and it has descriptions that college admission officers will like. We had a really positive experience with Elizabeth Emery at AJ Tutoring. She established a great rapport with my 13 year old daughter who was preparing for the High School Placement Test. We have been using AJ Tutoring for a few years, and have been extremely pleased, specifically with our tutor Kristal Jameson. She started tutoring my older daughter with AP Stats, and when my younger daughter wanted help with Algebra and Geometry, we knew she would be a perfect fit. Kristal is very good at interpreting the needs of her students, even if they can't quite articulate what is giving them difficulty. She always comes with a variety of resources to help, and is very flexible about changing up a lesson plan, if necessary. Most importantly, her ability to explain concepts and then provide plenty of practice has helped both of my daughters build their confidence in math. It's that confidence that has helped get them through difficult tests and assignments. Both have earned stellar grades in their math classes over the years, and we credit Kristal with helping them do so. She is lovely, personable, and easy to work with, too. We enrolled our son for both the SAT and the Math II subject test prep exams with Maia Ashkenazie at the San Carlos location. She is a very knowledgeable, patient and supportive tutor who was able to build on our son's strengths and improve areas of weakness. He learned crucial skills that enabled him to improve his score. He scored 1350 on his SAT school practice test and after the tutoring, took his first exam and scored 1480. He continued with the tutoring for a few more sessions so that he can retake the exam, which he did, and we are waiting for the results. He did very well on the Subject test also. AJ tutoring was fabulous. We used it for my son to prepare for the HSPT test. His tutoring centered on areas that were assessed to be areas of weakness. The practice HSPT test sessions helped to really prepare for the big day. Darcey our tutor was excellent. She worked well with your son and helped to make sure that what items given out for homework or daily practice focused to really help improve scores and understanding. The facility itself was easy to access, parking easy. Tutor and student have adequate space and privacy to get work done, and there are drinks there to help keep you refreshed. The tutor would email appointment times and also do check ins to see how homework assigned was going. It is definitely an investment money wise--but well worth it.
