She has the technical chops: studied at the Tchaikovsky College of Music, MA at CSU Long Beach, followed by 15 years of teaching. Just as importantly though, she's kind, engaging and patient while still correcting and teaching my kids with gentle firmness -- she really seems to know and appreciate them as individuals. My wife is the musician in the family, and she also tells me that the curriculum they're working from is an excellent one, and far better than the one she started with. Her studio is a bright airy space surrounded by a garden in a quiet neighborhood. She holds recitals for her students (which we like) and supports her students in achieving music exam certifications (which Marie allows parents to opt out). She prepares activities for first 15-20 mins while we watch or help. Breathing and warm up exercises (physical not on flute) for 5 mins. She chats with her favorite parents and acquaintances for the next 30 mins and spends 2 minutes teaching how to hold the flute on a lucky day and continues to chat. This went on for the first 5 classes and the 6th class got cancelled. No refunds no make up lesson. I should have checked out a trial lesson before pre-paying. She made me change my mind about giving flute lessons for my daughter because the entire 5 weeks all I was thinking while she chatted with other people during the class was "Total waste of time and my hard earned money" I play and learn a few instruments myself and have never seen another teacher who doesn't respect the student's time or the fact that they are paying for her to teach. I've noticed that kids who continue taking her classes for 2-3 years play some beginner songs. So, I asked her a few times if I could talk to her about her lessons. Every time she would give me a huge list of places where she teaches and that she has to leave in 10 mins to the next class. She never had the time to talk to me I'm glad I decided to chose a different instrument and a different teacher since my daughter now plays beautifully in just a few months.

She also helped him turn an initially disparate set of activities and extra-curriculars into something much deeper and coherent. She presented him with an amazing range of options (like online summer courses in entrepreneurship) which he enjoyed, looked impressive, aligned with his admission "narrative", and which we frankly would never have found without her. Finally, she was invaluable in compiling everything into the applications themselves and invested a ton in making each one as good as possible. This included essay ideation, rough draft reviews, and went all the way through to line edits with us of every final essay and application. I think I'm a pretty good writer, but the input and help that Jennifer provided my son was far beyond my expectations and much better than what I could offer. I believe that her effort, expertise, and attention to detail significantly increased the number of acceptances and options that my son ended up with.
