Our daughter finished second grade at Oak Knoll Elementary with an amazing love of science and an really great conceptual understanding of nearly all grade level material, but was struggling with the mechanics of arithmetic. According to state tests, she was barely at grade level. We came to Mathnasium, had her checked out, and found that their assessment completely corroborated what we had previously heard, but with a tremendous amount of greater detail. We started her on summer classes for a month and a half. She loved it. She loves it. She is excited to do math, always, everywhere!! Checking now much candy she gets in the different box options (she figured out that in a bag of Skittles she gets 3-5 Skittles per dime as opposed to only 2-4 Mike and Ikes per dime, thereby making Skittles a better value), figuring out how long it takes to get to school from one route to another... she thinks math all the time. It is awesome! Mathnasium and the Menlo Park team make it so fun that my nephew won a MATH PLAY DATE! And my daughter, whom he invited, not only wanted to go, but she came back saying that it was the most fun she had at a playdate that she can remember. Math is now a REWARD in our home. Even though our older son has always done pretty well in math, he had a goal to do well enough on the incoming freshman math placement test to get into Honors Alg II. We know that an extremely strong math foundation is very important so he went through the Mathnasium assessments to find out where he still had some gaps and then worked on those with Cathy. Fast forward and our son had a perfect score on the math section of his HSPT and has been doing very well in his freshman year Honors Alg. class. We really like the detailed assessments to make sure information is being retained and truly mastered. I also really appreciate how each student works individually according to where they are and what they are learning. I would highly recommend Mathnasium for students struggling AS WELL AS for students who love math and want to go deeper/ learn more. Our twin daughters attended Mathnasium from kindergarten through second grade, before we moved overseas. It was important for us that they enjoy math from an early age, and start building confidence in STEM. We found the environment very helpful in advancing their abilities, providing them the right level of support, and becoming a place they were eager to spend time. They particularly liked the reward system, as well as the party nights which created more community around Math. Over time, one of our daughters started to slow her pace in learning. Cathy was quick to engage us, directly and candidly share her observations, and worked with us to explore solutions (even when it wasn't Mathnasium). Cathy even came by the kids' school to meet with a teacher so we could all discuss together! As we sorted through next steps, Cathy was very accommodating in providing our daughter - and us - the right level of support. When one daughter eventually found a better learning environment for her (1:1), Cathy still welcomed her to come visit and help at Mathnasium so she could be included. Meanwhile, her twin continued to thrive at Mathnasium. This went well above and beyond, but Cathy just had our daughter's best interest in mind. We found Cathy very flexible with scheduling, always willing to do parent conferences, and extremely responsive to emails. Her years of experience as a teacher and understanding of local schools was particularly helpful. Don't be fooled! I took my 3 daughters to Mathnasium for assessments. Two of them scored well, and could advance into the next grade level, but still I was being pushed into signing them up to come in up to 8x/month. My third daughter struggled through her test, so 8x/month was recommended, which made sense. However, when I explained our schedule and how I couldn't commit to more than 4x/month until the summer (just two months away), I was rebuffed. I was told by Cathy, that she would not "risk her reputation" by taking on my kid unless she came in 8x/month. I was appalled. Clearly her money making attitude supersedes her desire and intent to actually help kids that are struggling. If you're only willing to help kids that aren't actually struggling than what is the point. Do your 5 star reviews really reflect how much you are helping students when you are actually turning down students that won't reflect well upon your business? I even confronted her, and gave her an opportunity to apologize, but NOTHING! Not a business I will support. My child deserves way better! read more

The owner of this location has a somewhat off putting personality. She behaves in a way that suggests that we the customers should have been sold on using mathnasium for our kids before we even meet with her or do an assessment. The pitch and sale aren't her responsibility. There is simply an assessment of the prospective kid and that's that. She doesn't take the time to say hi to the parents or explain why Mathnasium would help their child. In fact she was in a rush to leave and that was that. I have been so impressed this summer with Mathnasium! Having butted heads with my fourth-grader, trying to get her to do a worksheet here and there to keep up her skills, I was seeking a summer program that would be both engaging and challenging. I love Mathnasium. My daughter starting going in 7th grade, because she wasn't understanding the way her math teacher at school was explaining things. I took her to Mathnasium and her grades immediately went from a B- to an A. Cathy's assessments allow her to find out exactly what your child doesn't understand and focus on it. We have stayed with Mathnasium and use it as a way for my daughter to work ahead in math. Now it doesn't matter so much if her teacher doesn't explain things well, since she comes in already knowing most of the material. She even forgot to study for a test and still got an A. This is the place to go to excel in math and be ahead of the school curriculum preparing your child for their future. We started with the summer session to maintain skills. Now it has turned into something even better. My daughter does exceptionally well in math, but finds school math not challenging this year. The result was her losing interest in a subject critical to her success in life. Mathnasium Palo Alto/Menlo Park brought the spark back for her. I am very pleased with the tutors and support she receives in Mathnasium sessions. We have been going to Mathnasium Palo Alto-Menlo Park for about a year now. We've heard great things about the program and yes it's all true. Cathy Umana is the owner and does more than just "run the center". My daughter was attending a very academic school and I needed homework HELP with the Saxon Math being taught. Thirty questions a night with four to five different concepts in the lesson. If you didn't understand a concept it would be a spiraling out of control mess. Cathy identified my child's weaknesses and filled in those "pot holes". She understood my child's "learning style" and addressed it quickly. She needed to learn how to focus on the task at hand. Follow the rules and procedures of how the problem is correctly solved. Slowed her mind down to process the step by step process. And not just let her " do it in head" and not show her work. Cathy has tremendous patience and can adapt to every child's learning style. They are excited to go to the center, improve, and are rewarded. Thus giving them more confidence in math. My children started Mathnasium late this summer to keep up their math skills. I took them to check out the place. We had also visited Kumon and my kids liked the atmosphere and set up at Mathnasium more (also the candy they give as a treat at the end!). So we decided to try it. Cathy, the owner and her team at Menlo Park are very good with the kids. She is very focused on ensuring that the kids are focused, appropriately challenged and give them enough or extra time to finish their work. My younger chid has progressed a lot in Math and his level of interest and confidence in Math has gone up tremendously. My older child is still working on his math skills but I am confident that Cathy and her team will do everything to keep him working at his math skills and do well. The atmosphere at Mathnasium Menlo Park is warm, friendly and yet there is a spirit of hard work and effort.
