Avoid. Almost a year, $6,290 gone, and zero concrete poured.
Avoid Phil Fox and AJ Concrete if you can. There are many other honest companies out there. I had to click on 1 star as there is no option to submit without it but Phil Fox does not deserve even 1 star. He also claimed to be licensed but he is not.
I paid A.J. Concrete (Philip Fox) a $6,290 deposit on October 20, 2025. Nearly a year later, my project is still not done. I was told "two to three weeks" for months on end, and it never happened.
When we discussed additional work, he measured the area at 1,400 sq ft using his own non-standard method. When I had it measured the standard way, it came out to 920 sq ft, far less. Instead of acknowledging the difference, he became frustrated and started using foul language with me. He later gave other figures for the same area as well.
He also agreed to pricing which is documented in the original contract, then kept changing it and asking for more. On recorded calls he agreed to certain pricing, then said he couldn't go under a dollar amount because "the money's not there" to do the job. At one point he admitted he had no idea how he came up with his own number.
While he was on my property, his equipment damaged my fence and landscaping. When I finally asked for my deposit back in Aug this year, he refused and sent me an $11,000+ "final accounting" with charges we never agreed to and inflated prices for work he had quoted at much lower amounts- Again everything is documented.
It gets worse. The business address on my signed contract and on his website(12 Brenda Ct, Clayton) is not a real, deliverable address. When I filed in small claims court, the Sheriff's Office could not serve him. Since then, he has ignored my emails, texts, and voicemail asking for a valid address.
I have the contract, recordings, photos, and court records. Do NOT pay this man a deposit. If you're considering him, get everything in writing and verify his address first. I could not file a complaint with NC Licensing Board for General Contractors since they do not accept complaints under $40K for unlicensed contractors but I've filed complaints with the NC Attorney General's office and the BBB read more
