We were introduced to this little spot by a few family friends and have not been disappointed. The fish is FRESH. The fishmongers here are very helpful and know so much about their products. They can answer pretty much any question you've got. I am obsessed with their ahi tuna salad & can eat it by the spoonful by itself. They also offer pre-shucked raw oysters in a tub (~30 oysters). I enjoyed eating these on fancy crackers topped with a dab of horseradish. The cocktail sauce sold here is not bad but a bit sweet for my taste. Love this local gem! read more

This place is a staple in my home. I cannot see myself shopping any where else for seafood. Yes, this place is slightly more expensive compared to grocery chains, but I can guarantee you will never come home with fishy smelling seafood. Their tilipia filets are fairly large in size, but not tough. A perfect combination of tenderness, freshness and flakiness. The salmon is $12.95 a pound, but before you say geez.... Think about this. Do you want fresh salmon for $12.95/ lb or salmon that has a foul odor for $9.99/ lb from krogers or heb? I'm just being honest. Redfish fillets are $14.95/ lb. People ask me where I purchase my redfish, but when I state the price their heads turn the other way. If you love redfish like I do, it's cost effective to purchase the filets at $14.95/ lb from airline than to pay $33 for a third of a filet from a four or five star restaurant. This is me thinking out loud. Unlike other markets, airline don't charge you for the whole fish then filet, it's already filleted a ready to go. Fresh can be measured in taste and Airline has that down to an art. We came on Saturday afternoon after reading about them in Houstonia Magazine. The parking situation is ridiculous, in the sense that it is really small. I'm sure there are less than 15 spots to park. Aside from the parking the staff is amazing and helpful. Stop in for good conversation and better seafood. If the budget allowed to buy here every week I would. Quality comes with price. It's a few more pennies/ lb. than your local Kroger, HEB, and Randall's. Airline will be added in our biweekly rotation for seafood from now on. Agree wholeheartedly w/ the previous posters. Don't get me wrong, Whole Foods, HEB, and Central Market are all Texas companies and deserve to be supported on their own merits. But I try to make an effort to support our local merchants as much as possible. If you can't get all the way to the markets on the coast, Airline is the best option in town. The prices are way cheaper than the aforementioned stores and the selection is on par. You'll also get a much more personal vibe interacting with the folks at the counter than at the mega-marts. The down side is that many of the selections are farm-raised. Salmon, snapper, striped bass being among them. Additionally, while Chilean sea bass and monk fish are delicious and wild caught, they are among the most over-harvested fish on the planet. So serve your green sensibilities by buying local, but not at the expense of collapsing fisheries abroad. That's my PSA for the year - cue music and star tracing across screen. read more

IF you live in center city Houston (Montrose, Midtown, RivOaks or other inner-loop location) this should be your seafood market. Airline mostly stocks all restaurants in town, but does sell seafood to the public consumer. I've never been disappointed by the selection available nor the recommendation from the fish mongers of what's freshest and how to cook it. At first, I was hesitant to venture in to this market given it's mostly commercial/warehouse appearance, but I got over it and was happy I did. If you love ceviche and fresh fish from the gulf, get it here. Grill it up and serve it. read more

My friend Diane used to be the acting manager of this place, maybe 5 years ago. I had always thought they didn't sell to the public since they looked like they didn't want anyone driving by to notice they were there. So I designed and built for them that giant awning/sign over the front door. So I guess I was wondering, did anyone notice it more after I did the sign? I do love this place, great fresh seafood, and i usually just walk in and ask what's freshest. Hopefully they'll say it's something I've never had, then they'll suggest how to cook it and I'm on my way. Haven't been let down yet. Interesting info: They actually sell soft shell crabs. Most of the time they're about $4 each, and they're asleep when you buy 'em, unlike those rowdy hard shell crabs that are all walking all over each other like a New Orleans drunk tank during Fat Tuesday. I saw on NextDoor that neighbors had recommended Airline Seafood (not sure why they call it that since it's on Richmond but I'm sure there's a story there) so I finally went there. I went during the day on a weekday so parking wasn't horrible but I could see it getting much worse on the weekend. They have a menu of the fresh and frozen fish but it's not always accurate apparently. For example I asked for snow crab which was listed under the fresh section but was told that it was actually frozen. Some of the seafood is not wild caught and is farm raised which surprised me to be honest because I thought it was all going to be wild caught. I do not eat farm raised fished. If you don't either, look for "wild caught." I got the wild caught salmon, tuna, medium shrimp, king crab legs, and one crab cake. So far I've had the crab cake, salmon and tuna (and ate them as sashimi slightly seared). There was no fishy taste with anything I tasted so far which was great. The crab cake was authentic and not too breaded. The prices are very high though which surprised me. They start their smoking process on Mondays so the smoked salmon will be ready by Thursday. I am going to go back on a Friday to try the smoked salmon since they smoke it in-house. So far I'm a fan but have to build my wallet back up to be able to afford the fresh seafood. read more

Before discovering Kemah's seafood wholesale distributors, I would come here to purchase fresh fish. They are also available at Urban Harvest Farmers Market 8 to 12 every Saturday, rain or shine. Bare in mind that not all their fish is wild-caught or local. Some are farmed fish. Only folks who are truly interested in healthy eating will appreciate that. They sell all sorts of fish that you will never find at your nearby Walmart, HEB, Kroger, or Whole Foods. A lot of the fish sold are fillets. Very few are whole (cleaned and gutted) so you can't tell how fresh or unfresh it is. Also, their prices are high. Close to double of what you will find at Kemah. I would say this establishment is much more better than your grocery chain store for seafood within Houston. If you are willing to drive and save money (in the long run), I highly recommend driving to Kemah for a wider variety of fresh seafood. They will clean, cut, and filet the fish for you for FREE. read more

I absolutely love this place! Its on my top 5 places in Houston. Their seafood is always fresh and they have some fish that are very difficult to find unless you go down to Galveston or Louisiana. Jose behind the counter is very patient and will explain everything and anything you have a question about - whether its flavor, freshness, season etc. My favorite thing about airline seafood isn't even their fish though... They have THE MOST DELICIOUS campenancha and ceviche. Other than in restaurants those things are very difficult to find and even at 14.95/pint here, that is still significantly cheaper than any restaurant I've been to. The ceviche is also so incredibly fresh. If you haven't tried this place I recommend at least giving it a try. Don't be turned away by the fascade from outside. I grew up in a coastal town in the Northeast, and since moving to Houston I've been looking for a place to get high quality seafood. After reading about Airline Seafood in Houstonia Magazine and seeing the excellent yelp reviews, I decided to try it out. It was a holiday weekend, so I got a dozen oysters to shuck at home and serve on the half shelf (they picked them in the back for me, I was not able to pick the oysters myself) and a few pounds of steamers. Upon getting home, I opened the bag of oysters and noticed a pungent smell; the source was an oyster that was open and clearly dead. I'm not sure when these oysters were bagged, but that is completely unacceptable. I shucked five and three were alive and safe to eat, the other two did not look healthy and had no brine. This ratio of good-to-bad made me uncomfortable and I had to throw the rest out. Obviously buying oysters is always a gamble and there's always the risk that you'll come across a bad one, but this poor quality could have been prevented if the folks at Airline did a good quality check before selling them to me. The steamers were very good, probably some of the best I've bought down here. Based on the reviews, it sounds like they're known for their fillets, which I'm sure are great also, but the fact that they sold us a smelling, dead oyster means I probably won't be coming back here. read more

The go-to spot for quality fresh seafood inside the loop. Every time I go in the staff is helpful and let me know what is the freshest they have. Picked up some redfish on 2/19 and it was so fresh there was no fishy smell whatsoever to it. Tasted excellent when I cooked it up later that night at home. My only issue is that it is very pricey. Two times what you'd pay closer to the coast or outside the loop. Definitely worth it as the fish is better than what you'll find at a supermarket for similar pricing. read more

My preferred fish monger, they're not exactly cheap (like fresh off the boat) but their quality is exemplary. You will not find this quality of seafood at any grocery store, central market included. Granted you will pay for that level of quality, but good luck finding good dry (day boat) scallops elsewhere, well worth the $20 a pound. Be sure to ask about the price before you go crazy (as I have) some things can be a little misleading like say the difference in price between bay scallops, and large scallops, you see a sign saying Scallops $7.99 a pound and say give me two pounds and pay like $43, oops! But other than that can recommend them enough, also be aware they close early on Saturday like 3pm. read more

I have gone in asking for a pound of grouper, Jose went in the back pulled out a whole fish filleted it to order. Shrimp are always great and fresh. Peeled crawfish tails are from Louisiana; not China. i only bought local Gulf seafood here; not salmon. Whole Pompano, snapper, all so fresh. Store is always very clean. And priced great.
