This is a review of the CBSA operation at Stanfield Airport…read more We arrived on a flight from LaGuardia, got off the plane, followed the signs, and arrived with our fellow passengers at a locked door. Finally one of our flight attendants called and some airport staff person came and had us go back and down another hallway to another locked door. She then called some magic number to unlock the door and passed into the hall where CBSA personnel directed the very long and very slow line to the machines that help you fill out the customs forms. There was no apparent line for Nexus and no one directing Nexus participants until my wife got out of line waked to the front and asked. Finally. What takes max 10 minutes in Toronto or Montreal took about 45 minutes total. I should mention that things were complicated by a construction/remodeling project that is underway. But we arrived on a Saturday when there was no actual construction going on. And here's the strange thing. Each of the individual airport and CBSA employees was helpful and pleasant. It sure appeared to me as a former bureaucrat that there was no overall supervisor making all the individual parts mesh together. When we flew out five days later, there were no delays. Departure was a breeze. The problem was the arrivals hall. I sure hope Halifax Stanfield gets this sorted out. NS is absolutely lovely and all the people we met were terrific. Our only negative experience? Arrival. Sure seems like something that could be easily sorted out.

There's renovations happening and some gates can be quite far, particularly departing for or arriving from the turboprop "commuter" terminal. Food options tend to be concentrated towards the middle of the terminal. I do appreciate that the airport workers brought over some cookies and drinks for waiting passenger, which I don't usually see at other major airports.

On our first attempt to dine here during Burger Week, eager to try their offering with a piece of…read morefried provolone, my fiancée and I were greeted by a sign saying that they were closed for the evening. A post on their social media outlets would have been even nicer. The second attempt was much more successful, arriving at old people dinner time so that I could make a night shift and she a class. It's not a particularly big space, with some awkwardly open stretches. The palette is a mix of light browns, beiges, oranges and teal-ish blue. Like many restaurants and hotel restos especially, they're going for that modern vintage vibe. There's some tables with cosy looking couches, one of which we grab, a small banquette against the back wall, regular tables, and couches and chairs around a fake fireplace and TV. All told it sits 50-60, including the bar area. There were a couple other couples there, plus a handful of guys at the bar, not bad for just after opening on a Monday. We both went for the Burger Week option, and I got the steal of a deal which was the BW meal plus a 20oz Garrison beer for another $1. One dollar! It was a hefty plate of food that came, a thick patty and the rest of the plate filled with fries. The plentiful fries were good, a deep golden brown and crispy to the last fry. The thick patty suffered from being a bit dry and rubbery, but it kept me full for several hours into my night shift that night. The slice of breaded and fried provolone was great - super crispy, with the cheese stretching nicely with each bite, and it added a bit of saltiness and that slight provolone funk. The garlic chili sauce gave a mild kick to the burger as well. The pale lettuce and tomato could have been left off, as their out-of-season quality (or lack thereof) just detracted from the burger. The executive summary of the meal was basically, "great fries, missed potential on the burger". The service was super friendly and helpful, which seems to be a trend at the hotel restos. Consummate pros. Canvas is a cool little spot with a name and decor that are trying too hard, but I was glad to swing by and not have to put up with the lines and waits at some of the Burger Week superstars.

What a great spot. Price were great, food is fresh, tastes amazing. Friendly and helpful server…read more Not to mention the chef came to check how we were doing. Parking isn't the easiest but that is the case with any place downtown.

My husband and I had dinner at Tempo on our recent trip to Halifax. They had a Summer Lobster…read moreSpecial - a pound-and-a-quarter lobster, coleslaw, potato salad and a roll for $25. We loved it! We started with the Tempo House Greens ($9) which was mixed greens, beets, poached pears, goat cheese and pecan brittle crumbs. We wanted to share the salad as our appetizer and they actually split it and put it into 2 bowls for us. How nice is that? Most other places that we've been to just put the dish in the middle and give us 2 forks. I also forgot to tell our server when we ordered that I wanted the dressing on the side. I asked her a little while after ordering if it was too late to make that request and it turned out that the kitchen already made it, but they gladly remade it for me with the dressing on the side. What excellent customer service!! We both got the lobster special (obviously). The lobster was delicious and it was pre-cracked for us. The potato salad was good - and that's coming from someone who doesn't usually like potato salad. This one wasn't too "mayonnaisey" and it had peas in it which was cool. The coleslaw was vinaigrette based, not cream based, so I was a fan since I hate creamy coleslaw. I didn't eat my roll; it looked really dry. My husband ate both his roll and mine. He is a man of few words when it comes to describing food. When I asked him about it, he said "it was an ordinary roll." Whatever that means, lol. Our server was Arden, and she was great. She was really nice, refilled our waters without us having to ask and checked up on us appropriately. Decor is simple and clean. Tempo is attached to the Delta Barrington Hotel. In term of taste, value, and service, Tempo is my new favourite restaurant in Halifax.

I had breakfast this morning at Tempo Food + Drink…read more I don't usually eat breakfast but I had time and I won't be able to have lunch 'til later this afternoon. I ordered two eggs (easy over) and a glass of milk. It was good until I came across a bit piece of egg shell. Accidents happen and I'm glad I found it on the plate and not while I was chewing it. It put me off the eggs so I ate the toast and some home fries. I let Lisa, my server, know about it when I was ready to pay. She handled it well and asked me if I wanted something else instead (I didn't). She didn't charge me for the meal.

I've wanted to come to this restaurant for awhile and it was definitely a huge disappointment…read more We first walked in and waited about five minutes for the bartender to even acknowledge us. She was laughing at the multiple old men at the bar. When we finally got her attention her words were 'you look confused' and I was - there was no sign about where to sit. Once seated my boyfriend got the engine room burger and ceaser salad - the lettuce on the bun was literally browning. I got the turkey dinner daily special and aside from the black hair on top of my turkey, it was dry and has absolutely no flavour. We waited a really long time for a refill. The atmosphere was grungy and definitely didn't feel welcoming. The most attention we received was from the multiple flies around us and our food. I wouldn't recommend this place and definitely won't be back.

But inside it's a largeish, busy pub with a dance floor, sports on the TVs, and - probably - lots of busy locals enjoying themselves. It's on the country pub side of things, with lots of wood, neon beer signs, that sort of thing. But the menu is big. My caesar salad was good; my chicken wings (they were on special) were just OK, a little on the thin side. Fast, efficient service. Seems full of friendly locals.
