I can't even list all the different health and fitness challenges that Mike and Gio have helped me get through. They've not only helped with overcoming challenges, but in achieving new goals. Some gym classes and personal training feel stressful, this was not that. I was able to put my energy into the exercises and let Mike and Gio safely handle planning and monitoring the routine. It's a welcome break during the workday or to start / end the day. The mental reset of the environment is as beneficial as the physical reset. On session cancellation policies: Some of them may seem a bit strict at the start, but they actually benefit you in the long run. The sessions are very customizable and taking a stretching or easy session is better than skipping, 100%. I don't think I'll be able to find anything this good, and the only reason I'm leaving after two years is because I have to move for work. I would've never thought I'd visit an old gym on work trips or vacations, but this one I definitely will.

Joe has been incredible from day one, and I recommend him without hesitation. Coming from an athletic background (college sports), I had specific goals for my recovery. Joe took the time to build a thoughtful, structured plan focused not just on healing, but on getting me confidently back athletic ability the right way. Every session was purposeful, challenging, and clearly tailored to where I was in the rehab process. Also, it goes without saying, the convenience of at home physical therapy when injured is incredible. He brings everything you could possibly need for recovery. I am about halfway to full recovery, but wanted to share my experience thus far. 5+ stars....

Happy to write this review of Joe Mateo Physical Therapy and Performance Medicine. Joe's in-home PT care was a great approach for the recovery. I was very impressed with Joe's treatment and pleasantly surprised with the results. He had me up and walking and recovering most function within the first few days. Swelling and pain were markedly reduced. I avoided all opioids and did great with just Tylenol alone. I will certainly use Joe again for the next knee surgery.

I was back to exercising regularly and playing volleyball in March. It wasn't until May that I found out I had a hairline fracture and bone bruising through MRI because I was still complaining about pain. I was told by the orthopedic doctors and a podiatrist that I needed surgery for my ankle, but I ultimately didn't want to do that. I didn't like any of the PTs that were in my area and in-network. I found Dr. Jay by chance--a simple yelp search and I found out he was walking distance from me. I dm'd him, back in December, my history and asked if surgery was the only way to go, and he responded pretty quickly that he's had the same injury and was able to get back into sports without going under the knife. After talking to Dr. Jay via zoom, I was convinced that he was gonna be the one to help me regain strength and mobility in my ankle. Dr. Jay is very knowledgeable, he'll breakdown the anatomy and physiology so you know what's happening with your body, and he'll teach you the right mechanics for the exercises. He also went over types of shoes I should be wearing during different types of exercises which is important because the shoes I wore were affecting my ankle and foot mobility. Dr. Jay doesn't just treat the symptom, he treats you as a whole because everything in the end is all connected. Dr. Jay will create workout routines that are suitable for you, and will tailor it based on your needs, such as what gym you go to/equipment you have. Send videos and updates on your workouts/daily activities so you can get his feedback, and he can tweak exercises/give you tips on what you can do in those exercises to reduce pain. One thing I needed to learn was that I didn't have the same capacity for load as I did pre-injury, and that I needed to not overdo it on exercises even though, mentally, I felt like I could do more. "When strain exceeds capacity, leads to negative adaptations. When strain stays right below capacity, positive adaptations. Learn through mistakes, and learn quickly on how to find the right amount." I'm very hard on myself, especially when training declined due to illness, holidays, vacations, and or pain (due to overloading/wearing too rigid shoes). Dr. Jay stayed positive and continued to encourage me. He reminded me that we are not perfect, and it is okay to take breaks. Dr. Jay's program gave me the structure, guidance, and motivation I needed to get back to running and jumping without fear. He's helped me gain the knowledge and confidence to get back on the court. Will definitely recommend Dr. Jay to anyone I know who's dealing with chronic pain and willing to put in the work!

For that, I am eternally grateful.

The care here is beyond sub par. They do not have you do enough exercises to work on all the necessary muscle groups, and you will pay for this with your health. 1 (details). The receptionist acts as an unethical gatekeeper. My insurance told me this is one of 2 places that are in my network in SF; she proceeded to repeatedly tell me otherwise to persuade me not to even try to get the approval and just go somewhere else. After speaking to my insurance, they assured me that this location is covered and to go ahead and get the approval. Ever with approval already completed, the same lady refused to book me an appointment. My doctor stressed the importance of starting pt quickly after surgery, so I actually printed my approval out, drove to the location in person the day after having surgery (while barely being able to walk and on crutches). FINALLY, when I was there in person and I explain to her that the therapy has already been approved and show her the paperwork, she books me an appointment (reluctantly). After this horrid experience, I called my insurance and advised them to get in contact with this clinic and tell them to stop incorrectly turning people away. A few months later, my partner (who has the same insurance as me), needs to book an appointment for pt. The same lady continues to refuse service and lie and tell her that our insurance is not accepted. She ends up going through the same horrid experience as me just to get the appointment booked. 2 (details). This post op pt was the first time I have ever done physical therapy. I assumed their care here was good as I went through it, as I had nothing to compare to. The therapists seemed nice, and I had no way of knowing if what they were advising was correct, but I assumed they were professionals. Only after going to another physical therapist 2 years later, after having continuous pain, did I realize how bad the care here is. The versatility in exercise at the new pt location really put things into perspective. I could feel each of the important muscle groups being worked, unlike anything I ever experienced at FYZICAL. At FYZICAL, they will do the bare minimum and skip tons of muscle groups that need to be built up to avoid future pain. The receptionist (or whoever is forcing her hand to lie) should be fired. The therapists should take more courses or just stop being lazy and actually help people.

He took the time to get into the nitty gritty of my post Lapidus Bunionectomy journey and gave me a clear step-by-step path of how to proceed in my healing. He included detailed information on orthotics, healing practices to be more consistent with, a well-laid path for building up to running and suggested a CT scan to rule out any non-union at my incision site or any hardware issues that my X-rays or MRI might not have detected. He also took the time to thoughtfully and sensitively let me know I might not be the best candidate for custom orthotics. I ended the call feeling incredibly heard, honored and taken care of. I began laser treatment on my nails with him and as many of those treatments showed no improvement he performed total nail avulsion (ripped nails out). Now my nails are completely ruined for life. I spent almost $2k with him and every time I see my nails I fully regret the day I met him. I would have been much better off had I not done anything to my nails. Don't be lured with his marketing and web site. Do your own research. Laser treatment doesn't work for most people - save your money. And, certainly don't have anyone remove nails unless it is causing pain or other issues. At the of the day, be wary of fast-talking doctors. This doctor is more interested in his own fitness, podcasts and buying real estate (just ask him or do a search online first). I'm sure he does well with older ladies out there who need someone to talk to, but now my nails are 90% worse than when I started. He really is a doc on the run. Check out his "medical" credentials before you engage him.
