Walter stopped on the road while I was walking and gave me his card and told me he did work at my new house. I filed it. I had Walter come in 7 months later after the rain collapsed a few trees. Walter goes through the property with his iPhone and takes videos. He appears to know about rules and what to do with trees. After the video tapping he gave me a quote and we agreed to a price. He gave the videos. Then we waited. A long time but that was probably because he is super busy with the storms. Finally my day showed up and his crew came in. They work pretty quickly. My job was big and they are going fast. They were done in 2 days. I went though Walters videos and there were things his team did not do. So when Walter asked about getting a check we did a walk through and he immediately realized that his team had not followed the videos. He had them back with a day to finish Now something got broke on the last day, as is expected on big jobs. A small light and Walter when I told him quickly fixed it. I feel he is a guy you can trust and will do the right thing both in terms of service and post service. I would recommend him. read more

We have a Valley Oak tree that's over 40 feet tall and over 4 feet wide in diameter. Walter and Micah are arborists and proposed drop-crotch pruning and removing dead branches to preserve the tree's health while removing hazards. They provided a competitive and detailed video quote. On the work day, the crew lead, Jose, viewed the video and his team did an excellent job fearlessly climbing and cutting. They also did a great job cleaning and placed the debris in 6 huge but neat piles on the street. Walter and the Agri-Con team was very efficient and detailed with a video quote so there was no misunderstanding on the scope of work. We had 2 locations close to each other and both jobs were active at the same time. They left the both areas cleaner than it was prior to them starting the job. One site was a large avocado tree which needed to be trimmed but leaving enough so privacy was maintained. The other site was pruning of a maple and a fruit tree. I needed some tall old bushes removed along the back fence, so a new fence could be built, and I also wanted the roots ground so the bushes would not return. I spoke to Walter who did come out the same day I called Agri-Con, showed him the bushes and also requested some pruning of 5 trees in the front yard. Walter recorded the work detail and estimates on his cell phone and the videos to my cell phone. I never received anything in writing. On the first day the workers were to come out Walter did call me and said they would not be able to make it, because the job they were on was taking longer, but they would come the next day. Next day ... no workers ... no call. I did not call Walter until the following day which was a Friday and I did get a hold of him and he said they would be there Monday. Monday comes ... no one comes to the house. I did get a call later in the day from Walter saying they would be there on Tuesday. The crew came on Tuesday and removed the bushes, and the crew did do a good job. However, after the bushes were cut and removed from the yard, they started to leave and I asked "what about grinding the roots" and I was told another crew would come for the grinding. I waited and no one showed to do the grinding. I called Walter and did not receive a call back. I call on Wednesday and told Walter that the I would appreciate a courtesy call back and told him that I was never informed that the bush removal and the grinding of the roots would be two separate jobs. I did not receive a call back all day Wednesday. I call on Thursday and was less than patient on my call and expressed to Walter that I was very unhappy and that I wanted a call back as to when to expect a crew to grind the roots. He did call back that day, but quite frankly I had my husband answer the call and talk to him, because sadly I have found that sometimes gets the job done quicker. My husband was told that we would get a call on Monday as to when the grinding crew would come. We did receive a call on Monday and the crew came on Tuesday. The root grinding was done well. That was all done about a month ago. However, I just this week received a cordial text message from Walter requesting that I pay for the work, and I responded that I would pay as soon as I received an invoice. He did send an invoice to my email. Overall, the job done was fine, the crews thorough and clean up great, but the scheduling was irritating and confusing, and the lack of return courtesy calls infuriating. read more

This would have been a 1 Star Review, but my review comes with a caveat. In the end, the work done was efficient and satisfactory. HOWEVER, the experience we had dealing with Walter, the owner, was infuriating and very unpleasant. Unpleasant enough for me to consider joining Angie's List just so I could get the word out. We were in the process of getting our house ready to put up on the market and Walter came highly recommended by our realtor. He came to do an estimate. He sounded knowledgeable but spoke with a very confident, arrogant, and condescending tone. When we asked him for references or yards he's worked on, he was visibly offended and we got a distinct take-it-or-leave-it attitude from him. We still decided to hire him and his crew. The day his crew came (which was unannounced), Walter wasn't with them. The guys just started in on our trees. It looked like to me they were hacking them all away. To be fair, our realtor had insisted that our trees' branches be cut away so that she could get a view and up the price of our home. But, I made it very clear to Walter and the crew that as the owner of the trees and property and the family paying him, we wanted to clear the dead trees and only enough branches to improve the health of the trees. We enjoyed the canopy and the privacy it provided. Anyway, after a bit of shouting, frantic phone calling, and insistent "foot-stomping" I got the crew to go against Walter's orders and stop shaving our trees naked. Walter never showed up. Two weeks later, he didn't contact us once to collect. Three weeks later, he called my mom. Before she could say one word about the whole situation, he huffily said, "Just give me $2,000." The original estimate we talked him down to was $2,500. I have never experienced such horrible customer service and disrespect. Cut back some overgrown tree limbs threatening power lines, cleaned up palms, trimmed back fruit trees, hauled away and mulched a large pile of organic debris which PG&E left behind. The owner called promptly after my inquiry to come out the next day and do an estimate. He did a walk-around and provided recommendations for each tree on the property. He seemed to have a great deal of experience and expertise and also supplied tips on watering and treatment of each. His written estimate was detailed and thorough. The guys doing the job followed his instructions precisely. They arrived about 4 business days later with a complete crew and went right to work like a platoon of marines. Did a great job in only about 3 hours; I was amazed at how much they got done so quickly. They cleaned up nicely after themselves--even swept the patios and cleaned the leaves from the pool! This was the second time I worked directly with the owner of Agri-Con, Walter. The first experience, when Agri-Con trimmed a large Monterey Pine in my backyard, was very positive. This time I asked Walter to have his crew remove the tree. When I first called Walter for a quote, he was close by and was there within a half hour. He gave me a written quote on the spot. Two other companies quoted the job, one higher and one lower, but the difference wasn't enough for me to hire anyone else after my first experience with Agri-Con. In short, the quote was competitive. I was spending a lot of time out of town and wanted to be on site for the removal. Walter and I chatted three times before deciding on a day that worked for both of us. He said to expect them at 8 am. Crew chief Jose and his crew arrived on time and ready to work. I was blown away by the skill of Jose as he lowered limb after limb down this 80' tree. Did I mention that this tree was ten feet from the house and right on the fence line? I was concerned not only for the proximity to physical structures, but my irrigation as the downed limbs and trunk were being dragged out to the chipper. I also had a very small but prolific Satsuma Mandarin Orange practically under the pine that I did not want damaged. I had marked the irrigation heads with flags, but the Agra-Con crew did me one better by covering all of the vulnerable heads with a traffic cone. Walter had sent a crew of at least six men to drag all the material out to the chipper. Each of them were professionally dressed in Agra-Con issue shirts, wore the proper protective gear and were pleasant to top it off. As you can imagine, the process took hours. Well into the job I asked if I may have some of the chip dropped in the driveway. They not only made sure I got as much chip as I wanted, but also watched that it was clean chip taken from the solid rounds...no needles. When they were all done they cleaned up the site to my satisfaction and even got up on the roof and blew off the debris, including the gutters. When I went back to inspect the area, I found that my little mandarin was virtually unscathed, albeit one blossom that got knocked off! I had them trim a huge, overgrown tree in my backyard. Aaron came out to do the estimate and assessment of what needed to be done, and listened to my request to trim back a particular branch. I had gotten a few bids on the job from a few different contractors. While Agri-Con was not the lowest bid, they seemed the most reputable and professional - they are CSLB licensed, insured, BBB accredited w/ no complaints on file, good rating, etc. The guy who came out for the quote had a much better attitude than the other companies I'd spoken with as well. All that and their price wasn't too much higher than the lowest bid, so they seemed like the best choice. So I went with them and they came out to do the job on time. Once they told me they were done, I went out to inspect and noticed they didn't trim the branch that I specified!! I pointed this out to the crew foreman. He called Aaron and they spoke about it -- no problem, his crew ended up taking care of the branch. No issues there. I was happy with their work, their crew was courteous, and they cleaned up well. I hate when you hire a contractor and they just leave everything a mess; didn't experience that with them. Good experience overall, but minus one star for the tree growing back out way faster than I was told. Kind of minor deal, and I would use them again. read more

We hired them to prune/shape 5 citrus trees, an olive tree, to remove a flowering cherry tree, and to clear out some branches from the neighbor's tree where it was overhanging the garden shed. Walter was professional and responsive from beginning to end, and the crew showed up on time, did the work, walked through with us to make sure we were satisfied, and cleaned up (my driveway was spotless after). A great experience from beginning to end--not the cheapest in the business but they really know what they are doing. Also Walter is a certified arborist, so he really knows trees. Our trees look great, and Walter also was careful to explain the reasoning behind his recommendations (including that we keep one other tree that we were wondering about--did it have to come down?) and to give us advice about maintaining our (very old) trees. I let him know that it was important to me to have the tree gone before I had to leave for vacation and he managed to take care of it. And even though Walter doesn't do stump removal he made the arrangements to have it taken care of. Fair price, pleasant person to deal with and I couldn't argue with the results. He gave us a very reasonable estimate and scheduled his crew around times convenient to our neighbors. They crew were amazing and very conscientious. Tree removal & trimming/thinning of 3 trees= good. Customer service - lousy. We used this co. in the past - liked & trusted Walter & work was fine. Therefore, we didn't call anyone else for the needed work this time. Walter responded quickly and the job was done within a few days of his estimate, which was not in writing. He said he would "throw in" topping of shrubs that grew above our fence. Then it went downhill..... When it appeared the workmen were finishing up and the shrubs had not been trimmed, I called Walter on his cell phone (before workmen left) & reminded him to tell the workmen to top the shrubs. He did not return my call. Workmen left, shrubs not trimmed. We never saw Walter again. Maybe he came by to view the work to see if it was done correctly, but he never called & asked if we were satisfied. The workmen left brown stains/marks on the outside of our house from dragging tree branches & also there are scratches on the wood of our fence gate. When we got the invoice, I called the 800 number shown on their website, hoping I'd have better luck with someone answering. I left a message asking if they took credit cards. I called & left 3 messages on 3 different days, but no one returned my call. We have an answering machine, so no excuses. Finally, I downloaded the coupon on their website, deducted the amount from the bill & mailed a check to Walter. Given we were repeat customers, we were very disappointed in the lack of response by Walter or someone at his company. How hard would it have been and how much time would it have taken for them to return my numerous calls to say "yes" or "no" about taking credit card? Plus, I guess he didn't want to address not keeping his word about the shrubs. Things have changed from the last time we used him. Next time we will call other companies to do the work. read more

Agri-Con just finished removing 4 large trees (80 feet or so) from our property. Two were far down a hill, so a huge effort to carry them out. Another overhung the house and the last was tangled with neighbors' trees. All were removed quickly and without the slightest damage to the house, our fence or any of the vegetation, some of which was right in their path. When we had the job quoted, Walter was very thorough in his estimate. Another tree service provided a lower quote so we went with that. They then messed us around coming out twice and not doing the job, then saying they quoted it wrong. So we called in Agri-Con, the professionals. And they did an excellent job. We have a large tree in the backyard that for the last 8 months had leaves falling. Our gardener told us that the tree is not in good health and will need to be checked. I called up Agri-Con to get some help. I talked to Walter and he asked me to send some pictures of the tree. I sent some and within 10 minutes Walter called back. He gave very helpful tips over the phone on how we can save the tree from dying. I found him to be very knowledgeable and with great expertise in his area. Agri-con Restored and repaired my beautiful trees. Walter listened to my concerns and made recommendations about my very beautiful and important trees on my property. I have an Australian Eucalyptus, Japanese Maple and Chinese pistache that had been pruned incorrectly many times over the years by gardeners and people that were not tree experts. My favorite is the Australian Eucalyptus and it needed very meticulous care in removing the dead branches carefully. This was a very tedious job because it required tender loving care and time to carefully repair and restore the tree. Jose, the foreman is also and excellent listener and Walter remembered everything I asked of him when we first met before the job was scheduled the following week. The tree looks beautiful again and is now blooming all over with life and vigor. The Japanese Maple was also repaired and is thriving quickly after a true arborist has restored it's natural and correct method of growing. The job was to trim (for safety concerns) a large grove of eucalyptus trees (some as tall as 90') located around two houses. Walter returned my call the same day and scheduled an appointment for an estimate for 2 days later. He gave me advice on what needed to be done as a minimum for the safety of the buildings. He worked with me to establish priorities and was very clear about what they would do for the price. The Price was very reasonable. Especially when compared to what we had paid other companies for this type of work in the past. The 5-man crew arrived a few days later. Walter walked through the job with Jose, the foreman, and me to be sure we were all on the same page. The crew arrived on time and worked steadily and efficiently all day. They were VERY HARD WORKERS. Jose coordinated the whole job so that everyone kept working steadily. Everyone seemed to understand what the job was and what they should be doing. I found Agri-Con on Home Advisors and I would never hire them again. I posted this same review there but if you wish to contract their services based on other reviews; I'll offer some suggestions for you to keep in mind so you can learn from my mistakes. 1) Get a written estimate not only for monetary purposes but to have a written record detailing the work to be performed. 2) Be sure to understand who will be the point of contact on the day of the job to ensure that the work performed is clear to all parties. Especially if the person who provided the quote/ estimate is not onsite at the property. 3) On the day that the work is to be performed, be sure the objective is clear (and walk through if necessary) to the workers to minimize miscommunication. 4) Last but not least, make sure the work to be performed is what you want NOT what the arborist wants. read more

The guys did a nice job thinning a 300 foot redwood tree and a couple other trees in my yard for a very fair price. Some minor damage to some plants under the giant redwood as it rained down branches but they deducteda bit from the final bill to cover damages. The crew was good about going back into a couple of the trees to get some branches I specifically wanted removed. They also did a good job with the nasty black walnut tree in front of my neighbors house that the city of Burlingame and SDG&E had hacked to death on one side with little regard for tree as a whole. read more

I was totally impressed with Agri-con. I called them up to remove some old dated Juniper trees that was on the border of my property. After my neighbor approved the removal of the trees, the company sent out a two person crew to remove the trees. They showed up when expected, worked efficiently, and had all debris gone in half a day. The estimate that I was given was the same price that I paid upon completion. The work and the process went extremely smoothly. I learned that those Juniper trees definitely were adding to my sever allergic reactions being activated in the Spring and pleased to have one less cause removed. Agri-Con, Walter trimmed two huge trees we had in our front yard. (Our trees a very big and tall) Anyway, I did get 4 quotes and they were all in the same price range. I have had these trees trimmed 2 times before in that last 15 years and Agri-Con did the best job. The manager on site asked me if I had any special instructions and I did say I wanted more tree limbs cut that were over the house. And they did that. Plus they did a great job with the rest of the trimming. They came at 8 am and were out by 9:15. They took all the limbs away, used a leaf blower on my lawn and my neighbors lawn and swept the curb. Very clean! I was also concerned about liability coverage. (Don't hire someone without getting proof of insurance. I asked one of the other quoted companies and, although they said they did have insurance, when I requested a copy, they had to come back and tell me they did not have any.) read more
