So I emailed from Portugal on Friday, asking for an appointment. I got back an email that I was in for 10 a.m. on Monday. So I hoped it didn't start hurting until I got back, and it didn't. Today the tooth was fixed--it had decay under an old filling so it's time for a crown. All the work for the crown is now complete. I was reminded again today of the welcoming, caring reception that I always get at the dentist. When you get off the elevator, one office stands out--it has a glass door and glass panels beside the door, so you can see the bright, cheerful interior, in contrast to the plain wooden doors on the neighboring medical offices. And when you go in, that first impression is confirmed--you're always treated like a real person. Dr. Musolf is a very skilled dentist who pays scrupulous attention to detail, which of course is exactly what you want in a dentist. But she goes beyond that, and is unusually sensitive to your needs as a patient. Before you get those injections of anesthetic, she numbs the tissue so thoroughly that you actually don't feel the injections. This is a new experience for me at the dentist, and a very welcome one. If she does something that may hurt, she apologizes for it--you'll hear "I'm sorry, this may sting" or the like. The impression that you get, though, is that she is sensitive to your experience and how you feel. In terms of a personal relationship, she reacts to you as a person rather than just someone to be worked on who pays money. Over time, you get to know her and she gets to know you, and you can have a genuine relationship. That also makes trips to the dentist much easier. She has all of the latest equipment, which in dentistry is very important because rapid advances are being made that improve the durability of repairs to teeth and reduce the impact of treatment on patients. I was very interested to learn that the structure of my crown will be zirconia, and it will be created by 3-d printing. The outside of it, creating something that looks like a tooth, will be done by hand. If you're looking for a dentist for yourself or your family--my wife and I both see Dr. Musolf--you can't do better.

The office manager Denny is totally awesome, incredibly responsive, and super helpful. He's friendly and remembers faces well. The scheduling is done through ZocDocs, so you can easily find a time that works, book it, pre-fill forms, and get reminders before you go. I've been a few times and never waited more than a few minutes. Twice, I've been seen before my official appointment time. It's a huge shift from my old dentist, who was consistently 45-60m late. Both Drs. Said and Mir are top notch. I've only seen Said once, but Mir twice. Both were uber prompt, very explanatory, and quick to figure out and fix the problem. Billing is easy and clear. Without talking specifics, it's all very reasonable. No games.

I am the type of person who had terrible dental hygiene until college, when I had some big fillings. After that, I transformed into a daily flosser with impeccable home care practices. From the office cleanliness to the friendly staff, I love this place. Never once has anyone tried to push treatments on me. I love that I can trust the care and recommendations. My hygienist is also phenomenal. She teaches dental hygiene and is compassionate and skilled. I've never had a hygienist feel my lymph nodes and perform a detailed oral exam before but she does this every six months. The X-ray tech is also very gentile. I have a small mouth and that big plastic thing that I have to bite is uncomfortable, but she's great at making sure everything is done right on the first try.

There were two lapses, when I moved to San Francisco in summer 2007, and later, when I moved back to San Francisco/San Jose, CA in March 2018, and to Plano, TX in April 2019. I mention this, because unfortunately I encountered an extremely terrible & incompetent dentist in Texas (https://www.yelp.com/biz/plano-smile-studio-plano-3?hrid=rJgfedzOm4QEOesLuOaQSQ&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)), who did not listen to/believe female patients, and refused to fix painful mistakes - that he himself created!! - in my mouth, that Dr. Arroyo graciously spent the past 9-months fixing. As you can read from my review about the opposite of Dr. Arroyo in Texas, I had impressions for a crown on tooth #2 on 7/27/2020 and it seated on 8/18/2020, which is when the pain & problems began. This was not my first crown! I had a flawlessly/painlessly made crown seated in San Francisco over a decade ago, and it's still strong, per Dr. Arroyo's X-ray assessment of it! Not so with the Texas trouble. I returned to the Texas dentist, in pain, as follows: - 8/27/2020 - 9/1/2020 - 9/28/2020 - 10/14/2020: the fourth & last visit, whereupon the Texas dentist - unlike Dr. Arroyo!!!! - proceeded to lecture & mansplain to me, about my pain, and how the Texas dentist didn't like my "tone" as I told him about my pain, from his crown & from his night guard that he incorrectly created! It was torture. Enter Dr. Arroyo & Rachel - to save the day!!!! :-) - 11/11/2020: After I invested $8K to high-tail it *OUT* of Texas, just in time to avoid their power/water outage (!!!), Dr. Arroyo completes a limited oral evaluation to focus on the problem, and kindly charges me $0. He then takes impressions for a new - properly fitted!!!! - night guard, for which I happily pay $800, even though the disaster in Texas was only $685. I pay for quality! - 11/24/2020: Dr. Arroyo delivers me my new night guard (that is perfect) - 12/29/2020: I have a $0 follow-up with Dr. Arroyo to make a minor adjustment on either my crown, or my night guard. I do not recall, nor is it in my records. Unlike the Texas dentist, Dr. Arroyo *LISTENS* to me, as I describe/show him where the pain was, and he fixed it! - 1/25/2021: I have a comprehensive oral exam & prophylaxis/teeth cleaning with Rachel, and Dr. Arroyo QAs all of my medical records/X-rays from Texas, given the Texas dentist's lack of credibility/competence/compassion, and the Texas dentist's blatant misogyny/disrespect of women. - 3/3/2021: I have a $0 follow-up with Dr. Arroyo, to again QA Texas. - 5/26/2021: I have a prophylaxis/teeth cleaning with Rachel, Dr. John Arroyo's daughter & Dr. Jeremi Arroyo's sister, and she also applies fluoride. I begin cleanings every 4-months, per their recommendation, which I quite prefer to the draconian/torturous/superfluously expensive approach in Texas, of failing to perform sufficient prevention, then unethically charging for superfluous crowns & fillings. (As mentioned in the Texas review, Dr. Arroyo countered the Texas dentist, confirming my suspicion that I do *NOT* need crowns on teeth #14 & #15, as the Texas dentist lied. Dr. Arroyo said he sees this kind of behavior every day from dentists trying to make a buck, rather than caring about their patients.) - 7/15/2021: While flossing on Monday 7/12, my crown on tooth #2 - from Texas last year!!!! - comes loose! I scream in horror, as my boyfriend reassures me that it will be OK, and luckily sleep with my night guard, so I don't swallow the crown! Dr. Arroyo wiggles it loose, confirming the cement was loose, and re-cements / re-bonds crown #2, finally fixing Texas' mistakes! I leave a happy customer, and a proud Northerner (born in Colorado, and educated in Chicago). Case: closed. :-) My next appointments are in September 2021 & January 2022, and I am so happy to be treated normally & heard again!

I've had ongoing billing issues with this office that I still haven't been able to fully resolve. I…read morewas charged in full for dental work on March 30, 2026, including $700 pre-paid via my FSA card -- before any services were rendered. My FSA administrator later flagged this as a violation of IRS regulations, since FSA cards cannot be used to pre-pay for services not yet performed, and required the office to refund the amount. On top of that, when I received my receipt, from first appointment it listed work done on four teeth that was never actually performed. Because work was actually done on two and in different side that was listed on the receipt. I reached to request a corrected invoice, which am yet to receive four months later. The office has acknowledged the errors and said they're working with my FSA/HSA to return the funds, and were waiting for my insurance to pay them for worked done. Insurance has done that I saw again they charge my insurance for fourth teeth, I followed up again to remind them that was incorrect and request my refund they still says they working on it. At this point this is clear that this is not an error or just incompetence, rather it is a deliberate attempt charge for services not rendered and false work done. I will be reaching out to my insurance and also file a claim with the county. I'd recommend other patients carefully review their invoices and avoid pre-paying for services. And advise them to look for another honest dental practice.

Dr. Thornton is super personable and his passion (yes, passion) for improving your dental care really comes through in his check-ups and conversation. I was especially impressed because they proactively squeezed me in for a cleaning right before my wedding even though they were booked solid! He is very detail and cared about my priorities. She has a complicated history of gingivitis that has cause other issues but she can't be in better hands. She has maintain her oral health and Dr. Gialanella referred her to other amazing specialists that helped taking care of the additional issues. I can go on and on about how great they are as professionals and humans. But, I want to dedicate a few lines to their staff who are equally awesome!
