Locally owned place. Went in with family members for lunch. Ordered at the counter. Ordered 2 hamburgers, Italian sub, sausage sub and cheesesteak sub with a couple of orders of fries to split between the 5. All were freshly made. All were good. Delicious sandwich. There's a reason why this place has high reviews and until you try it for yourself it will remain on your list of places to visit. Was in town for a service and helped my aunt out by bringing a load to the dump. On the way back me and my two cousins stopped in for a sandwich. Just stopped in today with my 86 year old father, who is a local. The lovely fellow behind the counter greeted him warmly and welcomed us, too. He knew my father's favorite subs and his beverage of choice. Dad and I got the Italian sub, which was delicious. My husband had the turkey sub, which he also enjoyed. These subs were served hot, which I didn't realize. I usually have mine cold, but I have to admit, my Italian was delicious hot. Great subs! They call Down East North Carolina "God's Country" because of its natural beauty, its agricultural roots and a population that puts God in the front pew of their lives. Pamlico County is the economically poorest county in NC, and with its natural beauty comes a certain spareness of population and lack of restaurants that aren't named McDonald's, Bojangles or Denny's. Bayboro is a small town not far from Oriental (known as the state's sailing center) and 45 minutes east (if you follow the speed limit, which few people who live here do) from the nearest city, New Berne. There's not a lot of choices here for eating a lunch at an independent restaurant that prices for regular folk. Aggie's Steak Subs is the exception. Run by Barry Monk and his wife Samantha ("Sam"), Aggie's has been in the Monk family for over a decade. Barry and Sam took it over not long ago from Barry's Uncle, and he brings his huge smile, great customer relations, a business degree, and an almost superhuman energy to the enterprise. Watching these two prep food, wait on customers, offer endless rounds of free refills on iced tea is to marvel that anyone could have so much energy. Aggie's is named after Texas A&M and, though Barry explained it to us, we still couldn't figure out why that made sense as a name for a restaurant in Bayboro, but who cares when the food's good? We've only eaten there twice, and I am inspired to write this review now because of the friendly atmosphere we encountered there this last visit and the "BLT Aggie's Way" which I had for the first time. While a bit messy and drippy, it was delicious and like no BLT I've ever had before. The secret is Aggie's sauce which is a tangy mayo mix that seems to have very finely diced, pickled banana peppers in it. All the rolls for the subs and sandwiches are fresh and quality-made. The iced tea itself (sweet or unsweet) is made following Barry's grandma's recipe (the secret is good strong black tea, brewed with the simple sugar added while it's still warm) and it's the 2nd best I've had in North Carolina - the best was at the internationally-famous Grove Park Inn in Asheville NC. The menu is simple and clear: subs, sandwiches, simple pizza, and three Italian-style plates -- spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli. Aggie's could stand a little renovation. The elderly wallpaper and the bathrooms in particularly merit some attention. But the booths are comfortable, the food is good and meals are well-priced like they are not at many lunch spots near Oriental. The good vibes there makes it attractive to order lunch at Aggie's "to stay". read more
