The gentleman ushered me in and I mentioned that I only had about 20 minutes to which he said "a nice clean up?" and I said "great!" As he was clipping away, I realized it was cash only. Ugh! Strongly agree with the other reviews about hair length. The barbers care very little for what you ask for. If you have any hair longer than an inch and a half, he will cut it down regardless of how much you ask for. If you like a short, military-style cut you will probably be satisfied here. But Thomas does not like long hair on men, and he will cut it short no matter what you tell him. A while ago I asked him to leave a good 2 inches on top and back -- he gave me crew cut. Yesterday my hair was very long, way past my ears and collar, and all I wanted was about 2 inches cut off. Instead he cut off 4-5 inches, after telling me my hair was too long. He makes his own decision as to how long your hair should be, ignoring what you tell him. I won't go back. read more

I am a student at UC Davis. Not a hipster, as others here may assert - I came here because my parents had wanted me to cut my hair before returning the following week. I am not the sort of the individual to lollygag nor do things I am not supposed to do. I also came here because as is everything in Davis, the people at the neighboring hair salon were appointment only and booked for the next two weeks in advance - more like a restaurant than a barbershop. Honestly, at first, everything seemed fine, and the hairdresser in question, a man in his 50s or so, appeared to do a bang-up job. For this reason I will add one more star than I would otherwise give. The problem was that I didn't have any cash, and my phone was half dead. To make matters worse, I didn't have a credit card on hand. Rather than tell me to come back the following day, he had the audacity to take collateral and took my backpack from me. I have assignments and important papers in there. I have things I need to do. But that was not what upset me, for all of this is replacable and homework can be done at home. What upset me was the overwhelming and sheer audacity of the shop owner for castigating me and making him wait. He got upset continuously and lambasted me for wasting his time when I had went to every business, all the passers-by, everyone to find a way to convert Google Pay to cash, but nobody was willing to do so. This frustrates me. I understand it is cash-only, and if he were to get angry at me, so be it. That's all fine and good, after all, I didn't bring any money. If allowed to go on a little bit of a tangent, I'd call it a bit behind-the-times, but whatever. I have a fondness for things like that. What bothers me is the nerve. To claim you support students yet to take away a student's backpack; this is absurd. Had he done no such thing I still would have returned the next day and paid him in full. For the record, I already have. Don't come here, ever. Especially not if you don't have cash-in-hand. You'll only find luck here if you want some sort of military buzzcut. This was honestly the worst haircut I've received in my 20 years of life. I knew I fucked up in choosing this place when I showed the barber visually how much I wanted cut off the top, I even said it verbally that I wanted about an inch. He then proceeded to chop like 4 inches off and left me with an inch on the top instead. To give context, I came in with an overgrown middle part and wanted a mullet, however I asked to keep most of the top and leave a bit more bulk in the back. I felt bad for the guy, his hand shook as he used his razor and I could tell from the sound of machine that it was on its last breath. After messing up the top part, he didn't even blend it with the back so it makes me look like I have some sort of post apocalyptic hairstyle. I came home and try to fix it myself and that's when I noticed even more errors, there were parts he straight up missed when cutting. It's all beyond the point of salvaging so I'm just going to another place for a buzz. read more

Service is good but not all the barbers who works there are equally good. $13 is a very reasonable price in Davis. I am giving only two stars is because of the HYGIENE issues...they dont change the razor blades between customers and keep using the same one for the whole day. They only dip it in a sanitizer. The best haircut was done by a man in his 60s who was talkative if you wanted or quiet if you wanted, but he did a great job regardless. The next (and worst) time I had an absolutely horrible hair-butchering experience with a man in his 40s or 50s who, without asking me, used some kind of hair gel that smelled like ham. Yes, ham. I would like to give this place a better review but I just can't. The first time I have gotten a haircut there, I was fairly happy with the job. The young Asian lady there did a good job. The second time I went, I had to walk out before I got humiliated further. The owner was very rude. To a new resident of Davis, this looked like a good traditional shop. As I was getting my hair cut however, my cell phone rang. My wife had been sick that morning, so I took it out of my shirt pocket and gave her a quick..."you ok? i'll call you back". I handed this nasty looking old lady barber my credit card for the cut, and she rang up $18, $5 more than the cut cost. I asked why. She showed me a sign on the wall about the size of a greeting card and not at all visible to a senior sitting in a barber chair 10 feet away that said "Do not answer cell phones. $5 surcharge if you answer." This is a good traditional barbershop with mostly lady barbers. I went in between haircuts and asked her just to fade the temples and taper the back. It was great. She took her time, did a great lineup and she even shaved the temple outline and back of my neck with hot lather and a straight razor (felt so good).
