DO NOT TAKE YOUR BIKE HERE!!! I took my bike in to get it tuned up and they said the Head Tube was compromised due to the bike basket. They said it was very dangerous to ride and I should take it to the dump. Two employees said that!!! That advice sounded so stupid to me that I went to Rowlett's. Rowlett's said there was no problem with the Head Tube, they tuned my bike and I bought a new bike basket. Manager told me the threads were bare, when he "tried"to install a rack, on the back of my bike. To fix it, they'd have to pack my bike up and send it back to trek. A complete lie! The work they do is perfectly fine, albeit a little expensive. I took my old, old '80s Nishiki road bike in to get, admittedly, a lot of work done. I had gotten it for super cheap but of course I had to pay for it. They quoted me a high price, but it seemed about right, and when I got it back everything was fixed...mostly. The brakes still squeak a tiny bit and the shifting wasn't as smooth as I feel it should have been for the money I paid. I thought about taking it back but honestly it does work way better than it did, so I can't bitch. Not perfect, but pretty good. I'd recommend them. read more

I just went into Agee's for the first time ever today. I've frequented many other bike shops around town. The guys here are the least pretentious crew I have ever encountered. The guy that helped me was way more helpful than I even asked him to be. I simply went in to buy lube, and he offered to take a quick look at my bike, lubed the chain, and tightened my handlebars for me and I didn't pay a thing. I have had my bike repaired here and they did an excellent job of giving it a complete once over. They are the only Trek retailer in Richmond and thus have the widest selection of this brand in the area. Agees prides itself on offering full bike repair, sales and will even assemble a bike for a customer. They also offer a full range of accessories for the enthusaist and casual tourer as well. Bike racks from Thule are sold here as well. The staff are all enthusaists and can speak to your needs with a great deal of expertise. Before coming here, I've done a lot of price shopping and visiting other stores while also trying out a few bikes. I've yet to meet any other employees from other stores that were as helpful, intuitive, friendly, and full of information as the workers at Agee's! They answered all the questions I had extensively, and I learned so much about things I didn't even know that I didn't know about bikes. They are very helpful in aiding your decision from their vast selection, and prepare your choices for you to test ride them out behind the store where there is minimal foot and car traffic. The store itself has many types of bikes, and a huge selection of bike accessories such as helmets, locks, baskets, bottle holders, etc. The clerk also helped me select a quality bike lock so I know I'm doing the best I can to preserve my purchase. The prices for bikes seemed pretty fair and standard. Not outrageous at all compared to some other shops. I'll definitely be back for any repairs/maintenance I will need in the future, especially since they give you a voucher for a free tuneup within 30 days of your purchase :) read more

I had my rear wheel (gears and all) stolen and came to Agee's to purchase a replacement. While my bike was there, I asked them to convert my quick release seat to a not-so-quick release one. When I came to pick up my bike, they hadn't swapped the quick release, and there wasn't a tire/tube on the wheel. Even after I purchased a tire and tube, they refused to put it on the wheel for me, even if I paid them. Instead they sold me some tire levers, and told me to put it on myself. Except I wasn't permitted to do so in the store. So instead, I got to sit in the heat over on a bench at Cary Court, trying to figure out how on earth to get the tire on the bike. I hadn't had my bike very long, and had never put a new tube/tire on before. Eventually a passer-by took pity on me and gave me a hand. I can't think of any reason why I'd ever go back there again. read more

With every passing year, this place gets more depressing to look at. That goes for all of their locations. Dimly lit, bars on the windows, overhead florescent lighting, no music or any ambience... it's just a bummer of a bike shop. I've been in the Carytown location many times over the years, from trying on clothes, looking for helmets, and getting my bike fixed. The experience has always been varying degrees of "meh." The west end location is cramped and overstaffed, making you feel hurried to make a decision. Ever since the Carytown location closed its repair shop years ago, it takes an extra day (at least) for them to take your bike to the Midlo store for repair and then to bring it back. No matter how small the repair!! And even if they do have the simple part you need, they won't let you fix it in the store!! Are you kidding me? A former employee told me recently that the Agee's family long ago made it clear that the only reason they keep the Carytown location open is to say that they've been around for so long. Whether that is the case or not, they surely don't give it much love. Not only are there much nicer shops in town (like 3Sports out near the Hugenot Bridge) but now that Caryown Bikes has relocated to the same block as Agee's, the contrast in business models could not be more stark. CBC's door is usually wide open, the staff is super friendly, they can often fix your bike while you wait, the bike selection is wider and more diverse, and they are so clearly part of the community they serve, rather than just a placeholder for a company slogan. Hate to be so harsh, but sometimes even "institutions" need a wake-up call. In my humble opinion, Agee's needs to either come current or call it a day. read more

Agee sells bikes in the $3-4k range so I felt weird coming into to fix my cheap Schwinn bike. Fixed it. checked my brakes, lubed my chain, very understanding that I don't know bikes. Didn't pressure me into a bigger purchase. They told me a few things I should look out for, but they were very nice about it.. If I ever decide to plunk down the money for a 'real bike', I'll come back. Not sure why people are hating on them. read more

Myself and my family have purchased all of our bicycles from Agee's over several decades and we have always been pleased, but I will no longer buy from them. I was treated very kindly on my first visit this week regarding a new bike, but was scoffed at on my second visit today for trying haggle. I was given a quote by another Agee's location and this location was not only not willing to match it but was not willing to budge at all from the MSRP. (Oddly all of their prices are the MSRP, thus all of the bikes are unreasonably priced). The salesman was very dismissive and rude to me and clearly did not want my business. Less than an hour after the leaving the shop I had already handed my credit card to another bike shop for the same bike that was listed a full $50 cheaper and was willing to compromise on the price. I am MUCH more concerned about the lack of customer service I received than the outrageous prices listed on their bikes. read more

Agee's Sucks.!!!! Remember the theme song that rocked but the store not soo much. I went into buy some grease and thats what I told the clerk. He then asked me in a snotty tone you mean lube for your chain. Its common for customers to ask for grease when they mean lube. I have worked in a bike shop and its happend to me a few times. So I answer no I need grease to pack bearings. The guy then grabs all the grease lays them out and thats it. I have to wait for another sales rep to come ring me out. There wasn't another customer in the store. What could be soo important he had to walk to the other side of the room to rearrange some bottles. read more

I was looking to get my first adult bike as a commuter and for fun/fitness. I had so many questions and Aidan was able to answer all of them. They let me test ride two different bikes and I'm glad I did. The first one didn't fit right, but the second one felt perfect. I ended up biking home in a new single speed road bike which I am definitely happy that I bought. But a special shoutout to Aidan for being patient with me and answering all my questions. Though I have yet to buy a bike from Agee's, I have to say that I'm impressed with the professionalism and knowledge of the staff here. I've been in several times to look at bikes, and each time have been met with a staff member who knows their stuff. They really take the time at Agee's to find the perfect bike for you. Also, they make sure that you are fitted correctly on the bike, and don't let you ride around looking all awkward if a bike just doesn't fit your bod. I've, so far, been into Carytown Bicycles, Agee's (Carytown and W Broad), Conte's, and REI. I'd recommend Agee's in Carytown over the other options. read more

Sometimes, they don't have what I want in stock. Wanted a cable without a lock - didn't have one - had to buy one with a lock. Bought an Avenir pannier. When I went back to buy another one, they didn't have a matching color. The salesperson offered to get one from another store, which would necessitate going back another day. The only advantage retail has at this point in being able to walk into a store and buy what you want on the spot. Otherwise, you might as well order from Amazon. I bought my bike at Agee's Carytown location and within a year I was having problems with the gears so I brought it to the W. Broad location for service. I have overpaid for clothing and equipment at Agee's (like the $50 for bike shorts when I could have had a pair from Walmart for less than $20) because I like to shop local and I am looking for better service. Picking the bike up I had a very unpleasant experience when after waiting patiently on line for service an employee bypassed both myself and another customer ahead of me to wait on a customer who had come into the store last. When a second employee came from behind the counter and joined his co-worker while ignoring the customers waiting on line I was incensed. I was prepared to just chalk up the experience to bad customer service and move on to another bike shop without complaint but the bike was not repaired properly and now everyday when I go out for my ride I am reminded just how awful their service is. Too many other bike shops in this town to be treated so disrespectfully. I'll never go back. read more

If you value customer service and customer relations please never use this shop or company. Here is why. Recently I purchased a bike, spent around $1200 in the shop on Cary Street. The drive train wasn't running smoothly but I was told it will be fine so I just left with it. The service in the store was very helpful. After a couple of rides it was clear there was something wrong so I took it back in and they wanted to then take it in for its 30 day free service. So, ok, fine, even though it hadn't been used much, I cycled it into the store and left it there and walked home (Saturday). I got a message on my phone around Tuesday saying I had a flat tire and did they want me to let them fix it for $22!! The inner tube would have been on top of that. I called the store incredulous, the tire was not flat when I brought it in, but of course it could have been a slow puncture, it could have been punctured in their store, who knows. They were adamant on the phone that the fee would be $22, even though they already had the bike and were working on it for the 30 day free service. So all the costs of transporting the bike to their workshop etc was already covered. But, no discounts, no flexibility, no customer breaks after just spending $1200, nothing. I said of course don't fix it. I picked the bike up the following week and took it home and replaced the tube, took me 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. I reckon you could do 5 an hour if you wanted to with better tools. So a 50 40 hour week annual salary of $220,000 for replacing inner tubes. Let's take half off for overheads and taxes and you're left with a salary of $110,000 for replacing inner tubes. Not bad. Even if I hadn't just spent $1200 the figure is a joke, considering I had spent $1200 the previous week their attitude was ridiculous. Never use this money gouging company. read more

Came in looking for a bike without knowing anything about what I was looking for, as I haven't really ridden one since I was a kid. Dave asked all the right questions to help narrow down my choices and helped me find the perfect bike! As soon as I walked into the store he was ready to help and answer any questions I had, unlike sales representatives at other bike stores in carytown/the fan. I explained that I hadn't been on a bike in several years and simply wanted to have an alternative mode of transportation to get around the fan, while still being able to have something I could take to more "hilly" areas in Virginia. Dave listened to my concerns about being a little nervous to get back on a bike and helped me find sometthing I was comfortable riding right away. I ended up with a Raleigh 7 speed that he explained as basically an "all purpose" bike. So thrilled with the decision and grateful to Agee's for all of their help! Thanks guys!!!!
