I had tried to do my taxes myself and had completed everything except one serious problem with inputting and coding one of my 1099-R as a refund of Basis I prepaid on an annuity product that I cancelled and the Basis was refunded to me, not to be counted as income. The program I was using included the amount refunded as Income instead of refund of Basis adding to my gross income. Struggling with the program, I could not get this resolved and could not finish my taxes. I called Wolverine and John Eaton answered my call. I explained the above to John. John actually listens. John came up with solutions. He said I did not need Wolverine for a simple return because of the cost. John proposed that he recommend a tax preparer to do my return and file it. John made 3 phone calls on my behalf and consulted with his staff members to find a person out of office qualified to do my returns. John called me back to keep me informed of his progress. John consulted with me about my tax problem on his time and with no compensation. John Eaton is extraordinary, capable, smart, kind and generous. Wolverine CPA Company is exceptional in the field and I very highly recommend Wolverine CPA. No other company made any effort to talk to me and guide me. By far the worst accounting firm I've ever dealt with…read more My taxes were not even difficult - a few W2s from different states and some simple investments. My previous accountants from NYC had no problem with them and always finishes it on time and accurately, and they have a lot more clients than Ann Arbor CPA. However, with this firm, I gave them sufficient time and they still had to file an extension because they can't finish what usually should take only a couple hours to do, which is OK I guess, I'll live with it. However - they miscalculated my MI return (by a good few hundred $) and in the end the good state of MI gave me back the money they miscalculated. On top of that - they didn't know how to handle any out of state taxes (particularly NY state tax rules), which I thought as professionals they should know or be able to research, and told me that my W2 was WRONG (which it isn't - I've confirmed with other professionals and my own HR department). I had to google answers FOR them when they could have just.... do a little freakin' research and figured it out themselves. Come on guys, I did not pay you to give YOU the answers. Needless to say, after the massive delays, miscalculations, and just straight up not knowing how to do simple taxes, I'm going to take my docs elsewhere in 2018.

I'm becoming middle-aged, basically, and therefore I have financial facets to my life that exceed my limited capacity to think about numbers. So, I decided to get help with my taxes, and I didn't really want to go to H&R Block and their ilk. So, I gave NHC a try. It was a couple hundred bucks, but that's only twice what I always ended up paying for the software (with state and federal). I consider this a good deal. I've been very pleased with Jim at NHC over the past two years. We've definitely gotten larger refunds than we used to when I was doing taxes with the software. I assume the software errs on the side of caution. But again, I don't really know anything about tax law, and I prefer to keep it that way. If you are looking for an honest, easy-to-deal-with local accountant, Jim at NHC is a safe bet. Don't let the appearance of the shop put you off. It's basically no frills, but how many frills do you want your account to have, given that you are the one paying for the frills?
