Smile Design Ocala: The Dental Dealership Experience…read more You know how car dealerships lure you in with a shiny sticker price, then by the time you're signing paperwork you've somehow agreed to pay for undercoating, a nitrogen tire package, and a "documentation fee" that exists purely to make a grown adult cry in a cubicle? Dentist offices have cracked that same code, and Smile Design in Ocala is no exception. I called ahead. I asked the right questions. I was told, clearly, that my out-of-pocket cost with no insurance would be $150. That number lived rent-free in my head the entire drive over. One hundred and fifty dollars. I had budgeted. I had mentally prepared. I marched back to that dental chair with the confidence of someone who had done their homework. You can probably guess where this is going. Somewhere between the bib and the bright light in my face, a $49 fee materialized out of thin air. For what, exactly? Great question. The explanation was the kind of vague, practiced non-answer that suggests they have given it many times before. It had the energy of a car dealer explaining what "market adjustment" means - technically words, technically a sentence, completely devoid of useful information. Look, $49 is not going to ruin my life. But it is going to ruin my mood, my trust, and my willingness to recommend you to literally anyone I know. Transparency is free. Surprises at checkout are not the flex you think they are.

She didn't seem to comprehend the English language. Since my husband needed more dental services, he WALKED IN to Aspen Dental to request his records be sent to the next office. He took time to fill out their requested application to have the records sent to the new Doc and lo and behold- NOTHING. They failed to send the documents. Way To Go Aspen Dental! I was allowed to watch on a big screen as Dr. Harper examined my teeth on my first visit! It sounded scary to see up close, but it was really neat! He is the most gentle dentist, and thoughtful. He doesn't hurt you at all. Other dentists have shamed me for crying, even yelled at me as a kid. He fixed a temp tooth sitting on an implant that an Oral Surgeon put on too tight. It was put in so badly by the other doctor, it broke and loosened the real tooth next to it. Dr. Harper recemented it and shaved it down to fit properly no charge, after my cleaning. The hygenist is really nice, and patient as well. People who are afraid of the dentist should def. go here. Everyone from front desk, to the back team are friendly and make you feel welcome, when other dentists treat you like you don't know your own mouth, or that you're an annoyance for being afraid. They completely understand at OcalaSmiles. I drink a lot of soda, like lots of people, and every office I've been to it's "Just stop drinking soda all together"... and left it at that. Of course, I love my soda and didn't stop. By the time I found Dr. Harper, the soda had done damage. Instead of shaming me, or trying to browbeat me into quitting soda, I was given an explanation of HOW soda works and work arounds to prevent more issues. Now, I drink my soda through a straw and swish with water many times a day after having a pop. I know it's not the best way, but the improvement in my mouth health has never been this good since I started swishing all that sugar out of my mouth. They treat you like a real person, and they listen. When I gave them my nitrous number, they said "Ok, let's try it and see how it goes." They made me feel SO comfortable, that I didn't want as much nitrous on my second visit. I'll NEVER be a patient elsewhere. After avoiding the dentist for a decade, Dr. Harper has changed that.

In my early sixties I had a terrible experience with a tooth extraction at a "clinic" that was part of a chain. It took three visits to get the tooth removed and I was unable to be numbed completely. I was so traumatized I didn't want to get my teeth cleaned for fear of getting in the dentist chair again. I got up my nerve and started asking about dentist recommendation and Dr. Harper's name came up often. Dr. Harper was recommended to me by a woman I worked out with at the gym. She also had fear of going to the dentist until she started going to Dr. Harper. I have been going to Dr. Harper for many years now. He has filled teeth, put on crowns and referred me out when I had root canals and needed a tooth implant. I now have no fear of the dentist. Dr. Harper is kind, respectful and skillful to the point of having an artist for my teeth! Recently I decided to get veneers since my teeth were thin and grey looking from age. The process was not difficult. I had very little sensitivity during the temp stage and once the final product was placed there was no sensitivity. The entire staff at Dr. Harpers are warm, friendly and out for your best interest just like Dr. Harper. I wish there was a 10 star category because that is what I give Dr. Harper!!

The front desk was very nice, as was Dr Stickney, his assistant, the 2 dental hygienists and Dr Robin (his wife). They took ex-rays, came up with a game plan and gave me the estimated cost to me, after my insurance was applied....so I would be shocked at when I paid for the work done. The one thing they told me is it won't be higher than the estimate and might even be lower, once the work began. Guess what, it was lower! I began my work - had 2 cleanings (1 week apart), then received my temporary crowns, which he makes in house! A few weeks later, I received my permanent crowns (again, makes in-house). Let me remind you that I had 8 crowns put on my upper teeth and I had to get used to them. There was some discomfort after the temporary crowns were installed (about 4/5 days), yet Advil and Tylenol helped a lot. Then had the permanent crowns put on 4 weeks later and I was feeling great the next day. I would definitely recommend Stickey Dental, just as it was recommended to me by friends!
