I'm puzzled by the rave reviews for this place except most of their business must be doggy day care. We went there for a "tour" to check if it would be suitable for our family dogs, but the experience was disappointing. Instead of a proper tour, we were shown only the reception area and then directed outside to view the dog run through a peephole. If I'm going to leave my pets overnight in a "free-range" environment where employees supposedly sleep with them, I want a thorough look at ALL areas of the facility. Wouldn't most people? I am extremely disappointed with Affectionate Pet Care. I typically take my dog to a different groomer closer to me but they were booked, so after seeing good reviews for APC I figured it was worth the 40min drive to have them groom my dog. I have an 11 year old bichon and when I got there, I dropped him off along with the paperwork APC asks for to groom your pet. I told them I wanted his hair fluffy, short and not buzzed, along with a little shaping to his face and ears. Not only did it take them THREE HOURS, but he was SHAVED all the way to his skin, had been quicked 2x and has been scooting ever since (think they messed up his anal glands after attempting to express them). This place deserves negative stars. After boarding for 5 days, my dog got kennel cough and pneumonia. When we called to tell them, they refused to take any accountability and said it was a TRAINING ISSUE! She was coughing when we picked her up, but they refused to acknowledge she got sick there. Also, she didn't eat for the first few days and they never told us. We didn't find out until we looked at the report card they gave us at pickup. I strongly urge pet owners to avoid this place. They do not care about the health of the pets and do not communicate the issues with the owners. We are considering legal action because my dog is now hospitalized due to the pneumonia. read more

I feel confident dropping my 9 month old Husky off with the awesome staff at Affectionate Pet Care. They pay close attention to dog behavior and maintain a secure area for your furry friends to safely play and lay. My Leia gal is always eager when she realizes we are getting close to drop off and greets me with a great big smile at pick up. Affectionate Pet Care has helped give Leia more socialization as things are still somewhat slow with COVID as well as allowing me to have more self care as she often sleeps for a day or two after her fun here! We have also used them for boarding and the process was seamless through online request. I have not had any experience with their groomers as we do all of ours on our own. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOGS HERE. I left my Chiweenie, Nala (11 lbs, no medication) and German Shepherd mix, Pip (35 lbs, who takes three medications) here for a weekend. When I picked them up, my Chiweenie was extremely bloated and could barely walk. I expressed concern they gave my Chiweenie my German Shepherd's medication. They said it was "not likely," that "she probably is just getting old and not used to the high energy" and that "the only possible way that could happen would be if Nala got into's Pip's food (even though online it states they are fed separately)." The manager told me he thought I was "over thinking" the fact they packed away Pip's empty pill containers in Nala's bag. I immediately took her to urgent care where they assessed Nala had a thyroid level of 4.5 (over normal)- meaning she probably was given Pip's thyroid pills (and if that, probably also Gabapentin and Carprovet). Even with that information, they did not want to give me a boarding ($300) or vet bill ($750) refund. After getting my boyfriend involved, they said they would mail a check. I received it a week later but it was only for the emergency vet and not the boarding (I had to email them about it and they did refund my card over the phone). We got her retested (out of our own pocket) and her levels are now 1.2 (normal), which further proves the pill mixup. Edit: the owner has since apologized and explained management has gone through meetings discussing this ordeal. read more

After we went through all the machinations of the paperwork, fecal test and records-getting, and then, setting up the appointment, Not nice at all "Cory", told us we had to wait 30 days when a new dog adopted and that we could not board our dog there. Scored zeros for rescues. They asked me, "what, is he a rescue dog or something?" I specifically asked the front desk in the very beginning of this process if we could board our new dog there. Then, when they told us he could not board due to wait time, they were like "oh sorry" and "please accept our apologies" HA. Completely unorganized and zero attention to detail. Very dissatisfied. After reading all the other horrible reviews, I am so glad I didn't leave my dog here. read more

My dog goes to APC in Fairfax and I loved that he's comfortable. However, lately he's been stressed when I pick him up. First week of December he was starting to show signs of sickness. I called and asked if there were other dogs experiencing the same. Was told it was probably allergies which he does have. Dropped him off twice the following week and then picked up a sick dog. He was close to having being hospitalized for doggie flu. I called to let APC know they may have an outbreak cause I was number 5 at the vet from APC. Was just told they were sorry he was sick. They should have emailed all pet parents and posted a note at the door and on their website. I never recieved an email. My neighbor who also takes her dogs there was shocked they didn't mention anything a week after my last day there. Her dogs got sick also. She started spreading the word by printing flyers and placing them at dog parks and Petsmart. APC in Fairfax is going to lose a lot of people for this. Vet bills will set you back in the hundreds or more. You need to do a full clean up of the place. We will understand if you need to close for a day to disenfect and screen sick dogs from coming in. But not if you try to sweep it under the rug. read more

I'm really disappointed with their lack of quality service. My daughter called the other day, looking to schedule a grooming appointment for my dog. The girl on the phone, after taking my dog's information, gave my dog an appointment for this past Sunday, May 31st at 10:00 AM. I arrived there at 9:55 AM just in case and nobody was at the place. I called their provided number and no one answered. I called for second time and I left a voicemail. I got a call back from them around 5:00 pm and they left a voicemail saying "I don't understand what you are saying. Please call us back to understand what do you need." I was wearing a mask and she probably didn't understand me because of that? She said that they didn't even have my dog's information. Like I mentioned before, my daughter gave her all the information she asked for and also requested to bring in some documents from my vet. I returned the call and I was told that on Sundays the groomer arrives at 3:00 PM. I understand that we are in a difficult situation due to COVID-19, but don't tell me that this issue was due to miscommunication. Why are you even scheduling appointments for 10:00 AM if your groomer doesn't even show up until 3:00 PM? Where's all the information about my dog that was provided? Where's the professionalism? I'm really frustrated that I lost my time with this company and I really hope no other future or current customer has to experience the same situation. read more

I STRONGLY do not recommend this place for dogs who are new to grooming and ESPECIALLY for puppies! 2nd Time at this place and neither visit was good! 1st time coming in I mentioned that my puppy is 8 months so I would assume the groomer would be patient with him and be gentle. They were unable to give a trim because they said he wouldn't let them. I would've been fine with them telling me they just introduced the grooming items or attempted to allow him to be comfortable with the items near him. But no, all they mentioned was that they were unable to do the trim. Second time I decided to try a different groomer and asked for someone who was more specialized with puppy grooming and surprisingly, this one was worse than the initial one! They recommended her and so I was content, but after receiving my pup, again they said they weren't unable to give him a trim, no details of giving comfort or patience. This is the funny part, they were also unable to do nail trimmings even though the 1st groomer was able to! And the second groomer was more specialized? Last note, they didn't even brush him well! I did the brushing at home and it's like they didn't even brush him...What did I pay for the full grooming service? This place is more for adult dogs and dogs who are accustomed to grooming. While we have used APC routinely for doggie day care for several months, we plan to take our business elsewhere. APC is currently experiencing a HUGE kennel cough/respiratory outbreak. They are (apparently) so under-staffed and so ignorant about how canine respiratory bugs get passed along, that I can not recommend them. Bugs/viruses happen, it is understandable. Having such poor, and non-transparent communication to your clients is what is completely inexcusable. It's been 8 days since APC's cases started; my 2 pugs are struggling to breathe and I've racked up $1500 in vet bills so far. APC's manager admitted that, 4 days after the outbreak, they hadn't yet contacted all owners whose pets had been in the facility since the outbreak started. There's no notification on their facebook page of the outbreak. Customers entering/exiting were not warned about the outbreak. There's been no emails out the outbreak. The manager told me that customers were only alerted of the situation if their dog was coughing during the day, at which point they isolated the dogs. The manager related that, on day 4 of the outbreak, they still had not contacted all owners with pets in boarding...which is why they hadn't yet contacted those who had been in daycare. I only learned about the severity of the outbreak from my vet; who related the cases they've been seeing from APC were so numerous that THEY contacted APC to notify them of their superspreader event. This lack of communication about an outbreak is abnormal for daycare/boarding facilities I've used in the past decade. Owners understand these things happen; we simply expect to be informed in a timely manner. Shame on the owners and management for not communicating this situation in a timely or forthcoming manner. Shame on you for not showing any empathy to your clients. I hope they will be paying my vet bills I've incurred, and I hope that my pugs and all other dogs who stayed at the facility in the past week will fully recover. read more

My review has been deleted by Yelp apparently... beware interactions between APC dog walkers and other service providers at your house!! We employed one of APC's dog walkers for almost a year to come to our house for our two dogs while we were at work. Generally speaking, the service provided was satisfactory. However, after our baby was born and we employed in-home child care, things went down hill. It turned out that our child care provider was unhappy with her job (through no fault of ours, she was hired trough an agency etc,) and she was accusing us of maltreatment to the dog walker in an effort to get us to fire her. (Long story, not worth retelling here for this review.) By the time everything was said and done, we found out that our childcare provider had been taking our baby to the dog walker's house while we were at work without our permission, and the dog walker was inserting herself in our professional relationship with our childcare provider. When I wrote a letter documenting my concerns and the issues that led to the firing of that dogwalker, APC shared the entire letter with the dogwalker, even though she still had a key to my house!! This business has no idea how to deal with their employees and how to hold a professional standard in customer's houses. I would never trust this business to provide training and guidance to employees on professional boundaries or to enforce those boundaries. I would run, not walk, away from this business. I would not recommend this business to any friends or family. There are plenty of other options out there. read more

As soon as our beagle figures out that we're bringing him here he goes berserk in the back of the car, he just loves coming to APC! We like the cage-free boarding, and especially the big room inside for all the dogs to sleep together rather than in little cages like in a typical kennel. We also appreciate that they separate the dogs into two group, big and small, and keep them in separate spaces both outside and inside, especially since our dog gets freaked out by larger dogs. The fact that they require a meet-and-geet test for dogs before they will accept them for boarding also makes us feel better about leaving him here with some peace of mind. Overall APC is completely worth the money for boarding or day care, and the obedience course we took through APC went very well. We highly recommend APC! read more

Currently in the NOVA area (and it seems in other states as well) was hit hard with the dog flu and kennel cough, and I felt the need to express how appreciative I am of the incredible communication and professionalism the staff showed throughout the situation. I really wanted to like Affectionate Pet Care- I had heard good things about them. Unfortunately, all of my experiences were mediocre and more recently became worse. I have taken my dog there several times and them retrieving him is always an issue. Every single time I have picked him up, one of the two following things has happened- they have retrieved dogs for 6+ people after me while I wait 15-20 minutes for my dog to be brought out or they have brought me the wrong dog. I get that I am not there every day but they clearly don't know who my pup is and that concerns me a little. They once apologized and said it wouldn't happen again and it did the next visit. The bigger and more recent issue is their handling of a Kennel Cough outbreak in the daycare. While I know that this is not 100% preventable, their handling and communication of the issue is entirely irresponsible. I told them that my dog had gotten kennel cough and got a call from the manager that day saying that he was sorry my pup was sick and that I didn't need to call back. I shared with a neighbor whose dog also goes there that my dog was sick and she told me she had just been to the vet because her dog was sick too. Both of us heard of several other sick dogs at the vet, all from APC. I know at least 2 of us reached out to them to tell them about the issues with cases of Kennel Cough. Two days after the fact, I got a call from them saying they were working to contact the people with sick dogs. How does that prevent other dogs from getting sick? I encouraged them to share the info with all clients, so they could make an informed decision about if they wanted to bring their dog in or wait a little until cases calmed down. It would be easy to send an email out to clients. In fact, at a previous daycare, when there were only a couple of cases, an email was sent out so that owners could decide not to take their dog there for a bit. When I shared with a few other friends, they also commented that they had sick dogs and had not heard from APC. Kennel cough is highly contagious and they should have alerted everyone immediately upon learning of an outbreak of cases. Their failure to communicate has no doubt, has led to more sick dogs and vet bills for people. With the holidays coming up, some people will not be able to board their dogs and or bring their dogs around other family pets when visiting relatives. I'm extremly disappointed in their lack of communication and diligence to keep dogs healthy. They have lost my trust. read more

I'm not sure why it would've been removed, but it obviously was. We placed a call for someone to look for it and it was returned to us. We've also boarded him. I feel like I've finally been with this group long enough to write a well-rounded review... My dog Tucker has been boarding and attending day care at APC for almost a year now. I could not be more pleased with the amazing, friendly staff and the all around outstanding service. After only our first visit the front desk knew us both by name and have greeted us with the same smiles and excitement every time we show up. The first time I dropped my dog off for boarding everyone kindly entertained my over-bearing pet owner worries and were happy to tell me how Tucker was doing when I called multiple times a day to check in. Now, I feel comfortable dropping him off with a bag of food, letting them know when I'll pick him up, and walking out (and I never trust anyone with my pup!). They always double check his feeding schedule and any health issues that may have come up since he stayed last - which makes me feel even more comfortable! Every time I pick Tucker up I am handed a wonderful report card detailing his day/time there and a happy, healthy, exhausted(!!!!!!) dog. I can't imagine anyone having issues with this company and can guess any negative reviews come only from isolated incidents 1 time customers have. APC has the most amazing staff members who are always willing to got the extra mile to answer my questions and help in all aspects of being a dog owner. I've been taking my 8 month old shih tzu to APC for a few months and cannot praise them enough! I've used multiple services so I will break it down by type of service: DAYCARE: My doggie LOVES when he gets to go to daycare -- the staff all know him by name when I drop him off which is nice. I recommend trying to get the weekend slot for your first time evaluation, it's their least busy day so your dog won't be too overwhelmed going to a new place. I typically take my doggie 1-2 days a week for a full day. There are two different rates: half day (4 hours or less) and full day (4+ hours). Daycare is a great way for dogs to socialize if you're not a fan of dog parks. The staff go above and beyond to make the dogs comfortable -- when I first started taking mine, they'd let him hang in the grooming room when he got overwhelmed with all the other dogs and gave him time to adjust. You also get a little "report card" when you pick up your dog that denotes if they ate, what activities they did, and what other dogs they played with. It's very adorable. GROOMING: I've only used them once but Morgan did an excellent job. She was patient with my little guy who had only gotten one full hair cut before. They really communicate if they need to change what you wanted (e.g., due to matting, etc.). It's also convenient for me as someone who works 8-4:30 that I can schedule a grooming appointment and have my dog go to daycare the same day. BOARDING: I boarded my doggie for a weekend while I had to attend a wedding. There is a form you fill out to make sure the staff know their feeding schedule and you can bring your own food for them. They even gave him a bath before I picked him up. DOG WALKER: Once you fill out your needs (e.g., address, amount of times needed, etc.) you're matched with a dog walker who will come out and do an evaluation. They get to meet you and your dog and you can walk them through anything relevant (e.g., security alarms, feeding). Sheryl is great. I schedule her for one walk 2 days a week. She's very punctual, walks my dog for the full 30 minutes, respectful of my home, and very communicative. read more

We've been taking our dogs to APC for over 10 years. We (and our dogs) used to love it. Stacey is an excellent groomer and very personable, but it's very difficult to get an appointment with her because she is so good and everyone wants her to groom their dogs. So in the last 6 to 8 months our dogs have been groomed by someone else and none of those grooms have been satisfactory. 1) Both of my dogs kept coming home with razor burns on their bellies. Like bright red, bleeding razor burns (or cuts or whatever they were). That should never happen with a professional groomer! When I called to ask about this I was told to just put some balm on the wounds. 2) My 23 pound mini Labradoodle was there for her usual groom but this time it took 8 hours instead of the usual 3 to 4. ** 8 hours!!! ** And when I picked her up it was obvious her ears hadn't been trimmed or fluffed or anything and her haircut was uneven all over. And for $65! What the heck were they doing with her for 8 hours? 3) The razor burns/cuts continue to happen and the quality of the haircuts continue to be sub-par, so we will no longer take our dogs to APC. And I'm sad about that because they used to be so good. read more

Disappointed would be an understatement, maybe more like irritated. First time coming here, and definitely the last! I called before going in to ask specific details, I kept the lady answering on the phone for 5 minutes, apologized to her but wanted to make sure there are no misunderstandings, since our dog, much like many others here I'm sure, is like family. Technically speaking, she answered all of my questions truthfully, but with a creative twist, which tells me she's been trained on exactly what to say, and judging by her 3-5 second pause after each question, it all now makes sense. First off, when you get there, the door is locked and they have to buzz you in. You then get greeted by the receptionist who gets your groomer, in our case, Josh, who came out and seemed to be in an urgent rush, and seemed inconvenienced when I asked a question or wanted to discuss the cut with him. He gave me his cell phone number to send pictures of the cut and then disappeared, quickly. I had 30 minutes to kill so I decided to wait in the lobby and answer a few emails. In these 20 minutes, Josh came out at least 4 more times, keep in mind - our appointment was the first appointment at 9AM, and by 9:20AM, Josh had come out at least 3 more times to greet 4 other clients who were dropping off. 25 years, 3 different dogs, never have I seen one groomer work on 4 dogs at the same time. I then out of concern asked Josh, before I left how long the process would take, and wanted to confirm once again that they DO NOT crate the animals, as our dog gets extremely nervous when he's crated. He said 1.5 - 2 hours, and no, we never crate any animals. I decided to have a bit of faith and leave. He said he'll message me upon completion. 2 hours and 15 minutes later, and no call, I decided to head back in. I got there in 15 minutes, which now makes it 2.5 hours since I left. I asked to speak to Josh, he comes out, again, looking inconvenienced that I dare came back when he said I should come back, and says, we typically need 3-4 hours to groom dogs (our 18lb tiny dog, 4 HOURS!!!). I explained to him in my frustrated, yet still very polite voice that he said 1.5 to 2 hours this morning, and I drive all the way from Tysons Corner. He replies that our dog just got out of the dryer (whatever that means) and he'll do what he can to wrap it up. I told him I would wait. He then comes out 30 minutes later and says "all done, sorry for the confusion". Here are the biggest issues: the haircut looks awful and is the exact opposite of what asked for (he didn't cut the body at all and over-cut the face). The tail which I asked twice to be cut a lot, since it grows faster than the body wasn't touched. Further, our dog was breathing heavy and limping a bit. After asking him, he apologized and said that one nail was over-cut (the vet later confirmed that 3 nails were over-cut all the way down to the nerve - so thanks for that, Josh!). While waiting, I asked to use the restroom, which is behind the locked door behind the lobby. Instead of just pointing at the only white door in the next room, one of the receptionist escorted me to the bathroom, which I found strange. Coming back from the bathroom is where my irritation went thru the roof. Again, as mentioned earlier, the receptionist told the truth by saying they don't crate animals, but she failed to mention that in lieu of crating them, they shove in a tiny room with 20 other dogs of all sizes, and basically pull them out one by one, like an assembly line, they go thru the wash, and then thru the inexperienced groomers, who will rush and do a terrible job. Looking back, not I understand why they had opening so quickly where all other groomers were booked for at least a month. The name Affectionate Pet Care could not be anymore deceiving, in my humble opinion. Do yourself a favor and go to a different place. It's been 4 days since the service and our dog is still limping. My husband and I work M-F and they only offer evaluations at 11am and 3pm during the week and have only 3 slots on the weekend. I am completely flabbergasted with this set up. We were referred to Stacey by a friend and I can't say enough positive things about her and the facilities. Stacey was very thorough and professional, she put both my pup and I at ease by explaining the process of what she was going to do. Not only does she have a lot of experience but her total vibe was amazing. My pup was more than happy to go with her and after a few hours he was returned to me looking cuter than ever. He was also able to socialize with other dogs that were in the facility for doggy day care which was wonderful! Beware pet people! After seeing such glowing reviews on Facebook, I wanted to try out their boarding facilities. We have a few trips planned this year, and needed a (1) reliable (2) reputable (3) safe environment for our very nervous pup! We tested her out on several occasions, using their day care. First off, they require a temperment test, where you need an appt. They DO NOT give you a tour of the facilities, as I had requested. Instead they take your precious pet in the back and then ask you to go outside and look through a fenced hole to see how your dog fares with their testing. Daycare is $22 to $30 depending on length of time, boarding overnight is another $20, so a full day of boarding is $50. Our dog stayed for 4 nights. Upon dropping off, I asked them to contact me if there were any problems. We never heard anything during our 5 day vacation. Upon picking her up, we saw that her left eye was swollen, and pussing and was very red. I also noticed that my dog was a bit apprehensive when she walked out. I contacted this business and alerted them to this situation and asked if they had any reported cases of pink eye or any injuries these past few days. I was told NO, and that this person had been there for 4 years and no case had ever been reported. I was also told that their daycare was like a children's daycare and that 'these kinds of things happen all the time". I am quoting that from the business. I spoke with Wendy. I also informed them of my dissatisfaction and also posted this comment on their Facebook page. My friends had seen the comment and then noticed it was gone. I could not believe that they DELETED my comment. That's a first from a business that I "liked". I am going to conclude that the reason for all their glowing comments is that they delete out the negative ones instead of addressing them. I don't see any recent reviews from people who have boarded their dogs there, so I wanted to make sure my review was captured. read more

Shame on you!!!! My first visit for grooming was fantastic. The second grooming, my dog looked great but had big dried blood splotches on each ear - very visible as he is white. When I asked what happened they claimed it was the dog and he just has "hematomas" (commonly known as a bruise) on his ears because he shakes his head a lot.... I didn't think much of it, and let it go. Only the "hematomas" never went away, and got a little thicker. Finally 2 weeks later I gave him a bath on my own and noticed the large dark spots actually resembled thick scabs. I cleaned up the scabs with warm water and Hibiclins (antiseptic), pulling layer upon layer of dried blood off the spot and fine tooth combing the pieces of dried blood out of his hair, only to discover on there were very distinct razor trimmer cuts on tips of each ear --- NOT bruises or "hematomas" as she tried to play them off as!!!!! I understand accidents happen, puppies move a lot while you try to groom them, etc. but had they been honest I would have been able to watch these cuts for infections and tend to these scabs much sooner before they became mini-mountains of dried blood. The cuts on his ears aren't what upsets me so much. It is the fact that I was blatantly lied to, right in my face!!!!!!! How can I care for or keep an eye on an accidental minor scrape of an injury if the business that caused it won't even give me a heads up. So beyond disappointed in Affectionate Pet Care, they did a great job with my pup's grooming. However, I will not return to a place which is so comfortable lying to customers about their pets injuries. read more

Took my 6 month old, 40 lb goldendoodle here for her 2nd "puppy" cut. I was so apprehensive about how they were going to cut her. She's got a "shaggy coat" and I was careful to comb it out every two days to ensure that there would be no mats...but you can never be too sure. My worst fear was that she had severe case of matting and that she would be shaved or that the groomer would judge me for wanting to keep her coat long. Yea. Worried for nothing. Stacey groomed Penny and she knew exactly what I wanted, said she loved the way Penny looked, and cut her coat perfectly so that it was shorter, but not too short to take away from her "shaggy' look. She came back happy, smelling lovely, and with a cute Halloween themed bandana which I loved! Although they're a bit out of the way, I'd definitely come back. *note when you're getting there, be on the lookout for the sign. You should enter into the building lot right after you see the animal hospital. Although you won't see the building come into view, you won't be able to turn into the lot when you do...hope that makes sense? I had to do a U-ey because I saw the building but there was no opening into the area. read more

I love this place. My husband loves this place. And most importantly, our dog loves this place! Affectionate is the only boarding facility we trust to keep Jeffrey when we leave town for extended trips. We did lots of research before finding Affectionate. We even tried a few other places before deciding this was our only choice. Why? Because they treat dogs the way they are used to being treated at home and how they should be treated. We love their cage-free boarding. Since Jeffrey doesn't have a crate at home, it seems kind of mean to expect he would be happy staying in a cage for a week. We love their open yard with lots of room to run around and play. A happy dog is a tired dog and Jeffrey always comes home exhausted so we know he loves his stays at Affectionate! We also love that he has interaction during the day with other dogs at doggy day care because it really helps with his socializing skills. Lastly, my most favorite thing about Affectionate is that someone sleeps in the room with the dogs at night. Jeffrey is a pug and he snores. A LOT. So I know it's not the most comfortable thing for someone to sleep in the same room, but it makes me feel so much better knowing there is a person there in case he would need anything. I can't recommend Affectionate enough, honestly. There is no other facility we would trust to keep Jeffrey in the Northern Virginia/DC area. read more
