I enjoyed the shops and happy I got a sandwich because I missed this place Allá Venicio walking in Florence. The sandwiches were amazing. I shared one but customs took my 2nd one w the mortella. The plane seats are so small and crowded there was no way I could pull out my giant sandwich and start eating it on the plane. When planning my trip to Italy I had decided that with what little time I had (just one week), I wanted to visit Florence and Rome. I decided to visit Florence first, mostly because there are no direct flights from NY to FLR and I wanted to get the longer/layover trip out of the way first. After a quick pit stop in AMS, I finally reached my destination in FLR. After landing, I could definitely see why there are no direct flights from the US (maybe?) here - FLR is a pretty small airport. Because our flight was short, we actually boarded and exited the plane on the tarmac and after a short bus ride were shuffled to baggage claim. Everything was really efficient - I didn't interact with many staff members but the bags came quickly. In terms of aesthetics, FLR seems kinda dated/tired - but if you can look past that it has all the amenities that make it a good airport. Clear signs, speedy service, and a rail just outside arrivals that leads you to the city center. Overall, nothing outstanding about FLR from my perspective but also nothing negative - it got me out of the plane and to my destination quickly which I all I can really ask for. read more

The Florence airport (FLR) is a small airport and has pretty average food and shops available. Immediately inside the entrance is currency exchange and a coffee shop. The customs office/window is just past the cafe to the left of the elevator. The check-in counters are on the second floor, same as the security. My Apple Watch set off the metal detector. Ride share pick up and drop off is really close to the entrance. When exiting the airport, go to the left. I used Uber with no issues at all. All eleven or so gates are crowded together. There are no staff to organize the waiting area. There is one small shop with some snacks and small souvenirs. Furthermore, you need to take a bus to get from the gate to the actual plane. read more

The Florence Airport, or Aeroporto di Firenze reminds me of the old LaGuardia back in it's day. Long before any of the various improvements in the 1980s, which I found not to be a bad thing. It's just a trip back into air travel time. Now where is the TARDIS? The runway here are very short. So short, that although flights come and go to various cities in Central Europe, you cannot get one of those large overseas Airbus or Boeing jets in here, due to it's short runways. It's very similar to today's LGA. Again it's not a bad thing, since this creates a sense of intimacy, not seen in today's modern "people mover", wiz-bang air travel experience. Our Viking Cruise bus dropped us off in front of its only terminal building, a mere 100 meters from the Ticket and Baggage Checkin point. Actually, the Duty-Free area here is much larger. LOL. And although the VIP Lounge was also tight, it was very comfy and well stocked with breakfast items. The other couple we were traveling with, who needed a wheelchair, found everyone to be very helpful. The Agent on Duty at the entrance was able to accommodate them and update their Flight information which had changed. Nice. read more

I had to ask for help, at some point, I thought that I had gotten out of the security area, a bit confusing. Allow a lot of time to check yourself in. read more

I have been to small airports and some of the biggest in the world. the Florence airport is of the latter but I have never seen such a mickey mouse operation in my life The bathrooms were disgusting. No soap, smelled like a portalett nuff said. BOTH bathrooms I went into was like this This airport has no jetways. They use a bus to get you to the plane from the terminal. and we sat here after they insisted, we crowded into a a tiny gate area and waited for the bus for 40 minutes even though our flight was 100 feet away. Pro tip to the staff, if you having issues let people know. Better yet, don't make jokes, carry on and have a good time while we are packed like sardines in a tiny room right in front of you. Only after like 30 minutes AND 10 people came up to ask WTF was going on did them make an announcement. Also if you are dependent on busses to get people to the plane from the gate maybe have a spare? read more

Wow this airport is VERY SMALL. We arrived at 3:30 am for our 6:30 am flight (3 hours early for international), and the airport didn't open until 4 am. We stood outside with a group of people and they let us in about 10 minutes early thankfully. It was freezing outside! We got right in line for the VAT tax window, which we learned didn't open until 4:30. I was worried we wouldn't have enough time, until I realized this airport is almost like a bus station. There are literally just a couple gates. Once we quickly did the VAT tax for our luxury goods we bought (such a deal getting the tax back - will definitely do this again), we got in line to check our bags, then through security. It was probably 5 am at this point and we had 1 full hour. There was only one food station open, so we got sandwiches and coffee. Then you go downstairs and you are at your "gate". I didn't like how all the automatic sliding glass doors were constantly open from people going through because it was so cold outside. I was frozen! This tiny airport had pros and cons to flying in and out of a huge airport. I would do it again, but now I know what to expect better. read more

It's small, somewhat modern, oh and did I mention it's small? The Good: The train from Florence City takes only about 20 minutes to reach the airport. Just hop on and it's the last stop. About 10-ish stops in between. Cheap too! The security screeners are friendly and I entered with zero hassles. I still say US TSA is the worst! There's a small cafe before you enter the Lufthansa boarding area that offers sandwiches, drinks, and snacks. Euro Union approved face masks too! It's a small airport so getting around is easy peasy! The Bad: Nothing bad structure wise. But... The small size is good for getting around, but horrible for social distancing. Airport mask mandates still required during my travels, but what's the point if everyone is standing shoulder to shoulder in a small space waiting, waiting for... The Ugly: My flight to France was delayed over an hour. Which almost made me miss my connecting flight in Germany. So it's probably a Lufthansa gripe more than Airport one, but still that hour crammed in a small area of the terminal was uncomfortable! Zero communication on why it was delayed. No updates. Everyone just fretting waiting to board. My Take: I'd still fly into Aeroporto di Firenze the next time I have that Florentine Steak in Tuscany craving. It wasn't the most pleasant airport experience, however the employees were helpful and nice. And hey, don't ever forget you're in Italy! read more

I went into a store called Hudson at Aeroporto di Firenze and the staff were incredibly rude to me and treated every other person in the shop differently . I have no idea if it was because I was the only black person in the shop but when i went to the till to ask for help 2 women 1 tall with brown hair and glasses and another short both continued their conversation and ignored me asking for help even though i politely waited. Soon after this , I asked for help on which charger to get the woman at the till rudely stated the difference between the 2 chargers and then when i asked for a refund she said no because I didn't have the receipt even though she never printed me a receipt . I work retail and i understand the frustration but I clearly did not do anything wrong and I always treat people with kindness and respect however i cannot tolerate this and something needs to be done ! read more

I'm seeing a trend today, of travel misgivings! Arrived Florence airport, a tiny but clean place for our 1:45pm flight to Barcelona. Due to wind! Our flight was canceled now to depart at 10:55pm today hopefully. We could have enjoyed another full day in Florence! It seems that Vueling airlines can't manage to get us to Barcelona until 1am and as a result, the airport is in chaos, the restaurant closed due to volume and the food stands are nearly out of paninis! I think they may still have some wine, travel is a huge hassle! Update as we continue to wait for departure, the hospitality of the auxiliary cafe staff has been exemplary! We have been given paninis, beer, wine and cappuccino. They have went out of there way to make this layover tolerable! read more

This is a really small airport (you know - the kind where you board a bus to get you to the plane). Clean, light and the staff all seem pretty friendly and courteous. I don't understand why others are so negative about it - but it is true that there is basically nowhere to eat that I could see, luckily I could buy a water from a machine. Pretty sad! After giving 2 stars for arrival, primarily due to the car rental waiting times and shuttle service, on the way back it is 1 star. Handing back the car is easy, however, the shuttle service is still poor. Then the fun starts, however. The check-in area is seriously too small and overcrowded. After finally finding the right desk and waiting for check-in things don't really improve after security. There is a single lounge for all airlines. Overall, Florence airport is dated and too small and inefficient for a city of the size and the amount of tourists. read more

Aloha, since we train'o down from Geneva to Florence over a 10 day period, to get back quicker, we flew. Very inexpensive flights back via Rome or Zurich (I know). But really it was quicker. Getting to the Florence airport can have traffic, so plan accordingly. Once there, it's easy to figured out where to go. Nice clean restrooms, easy to get around, but be mindful of your time. It doesn't seem fair for me to review the Florence Airport because my husband and I only landed here on our honeymoon. We flew out of Naples Airport later on. Anyways it was an ungodly nighttime hour when we arrived. The immigration agent chuckled when I squeed at getting my first European passport stamp. It's not a luxurious airport but still quite nice and clean. Getting our bags was smooth, and we managed to find a convenience store open to buy outlet converters. Definitely should have planned ahead to get some but grateful the option was available. There's also bottled water, snacks, and toiletries if needed. My husband was adept at finding the taxi stand. It's a small airport so once you exit, it's not super hard to find. He'd been practicing his Italian for moments like this. We were picked up and driven to our hotel. It's likely I'll be back in Florence within the next few years and will fly in and out of this airport. Not dreading it! read more

Winded up here at FLR twice during a recent European vacation. Once coming in from Paris and another time leaving to Amsterdam to start the journey home. Arrival: - Easily one of the smallest airports I can remember ever going to! Makes it real easy to grab your checked bag and get out to the taxi line, but is also just dinky and "bare-bones" as far as airports go. - We arrived to a near empty airport at 11:30pm and stilll there was some confusion on where the taxi line is located and where one could get picked up at specifically. Seriously, there's only 40 of us here. Get it together. lol Departure: - Still tiny, but easy to navigate. I have never been to an airport before where you could walk down hallways for moments at a time without seeing another soul! It was odd, to say the least. - at least you have SOME kind of food options (a cafe upstairs that actually had some good, affordable sandwiches .....and lemon coke zero...why can't we get that over here?? lol) - pretty slow and terrible wifi It wasn't the worst airport I've eve been to. Hell, it wasn't even the worst airport I went to on this trip (VCE-Venice), but it was nothing to write home to Mom about. It did the trick, I suppose. 3 stars. A-Ok. read more

This is a very interesting airport for sure! To start, there is one runway and apparently no taxiways - we landed, pulled a U TURN on the runway and proceeded to the "gate" aka tarmac space next to the "terminal". Arrivals is grim, y'all - it has all the charm and amenities of your buddies garage. Actually, your buddies garage has a beer fridge and a stained couch, so it's better. Departures? Well, it's actually pretty nice. There are some standard duty free type stores, a place to grab a coffee and the gate areas (10 in all) are freshly remodeled. We didn't have issues with security but I can see where things would get backed up fast. We had to pull a u turn on the runway leaving too - good times. read more

Very tiny airport in Florence. It's not too hard to navigate and the security lines go pretty quickly. There are quite a few shops you can browse through. Sadly though, there is hardly anything to choose from food wise. They have a small food court with two options: A coffee shop and pizza. Honestly after spending a lot of time in Italy that was the last thing I wanted.. They had a small selection of snacks, and that's literally about it, unless you want candy. The gate waiting areas are TINY..and confusing. They didn't even show what gate I needed to be at until shortly before boarding. I had to go up and ask passport control if I was supposed to even go through it, as it only went to a couple gates. They looked at me like I had two heads and asked me to come back right before my flight. A bunch of the chairs had outlets, yet none of them even worked. I'll probably try flying into Rome next time, as this airport caused me a lot of stress...but it'll do if need be. read more

This is the smallest airport I've ever been. And It's not the about the size I'm complaining about, it's the inconvenience that they posed to passengers flying out to Paris and other neighboring cities. With a long line of over 50 people , it's a shame that they only have 2 counters working for the rest of the departing passengers. It's hot on a winter day and weary passengers trying to get out to their destination ... we're just plain miserable . Upon entering I was assaulted because they I accused me of having cocaine and weed. Weed is legal for medical in Italy , what a joke. First time in Italy from a flight originating in detroit to Amsterdam then Florence. My luggage was not on the carousel and there were no directions or suggestions as to how to get it. From watching I saw others in a line, they didn't move an inch for hours and the people behind the window were slow as molasses. They didn't give a s**t that it was 100 degrees and we had all been flying for 14 hours. I filled out my little paper and had to wait another hour to hand it to someone to get a receipt. three days into my dream vacation my luggage arrived after constant messaging and inquiries. I had to borrow clothes and toiletries and wear jeans in 102 degree heat. I'm dreading going back to return and hope everything is smoother and faster. read more

Even though the airport is small, it is modern and clean. Nothing to complain about as long as I don't compare to major airports. My flight out to CDG was at 6:35am and we got there at 5:20am via the tram. Only had a carry-on so we went straight to security checkpoint. Took out the 3-1-1 liquids bag for screening, had no issue, and went straight to the gate. Had time to spare and even found seats! No jetways so took a bus to the plane. read more

The airport is old and tiny. We checked in online for our flights on Air France to CDG in Paris and just needed to check in our bags. Luckily we got there 2 hours early, however, the guy working the counter at Air France told us we had to wait til they open an hour later. Really? I've never seen this at any other airport. If you're working the counter, then you're working! Why are you deciding to not let customers check in their bags? Luckily, he did open up a little earlier than an hour. There's "free wifi" if you put in your email address and such, but obviously it's slow. When it was time to board our shuttle to the plane, we literally were on the shuttle for 10 seconds and then right at our plane. Is that really necessary? I know I gave CDG a 2, but it is still ahead of this airport. read more

These were a few select musings I had upon landing at the Florence airport: What's the point in having immigration officials in glassed-in boxes if they barely look at your passport (only enough to find a blank page to stamp it) and don't ask you any questions? Is it absolutely necessary to slam our luggage into the conveyor belt such that I can clearly hear every single item you toss on it... through the airport wall? Could you possibly at least stack the luggage on the belt in a way that doesn't cause massive heavy suitcases to fall off as they round a bend, potentially injuring unaware bystanders? Given that we're well into the 21st century, would a little free wi-fi be so hard to install up in this piece? I need a sandwich. We're in Italy. Come on... there -has- to be something open. Anything? Really? ---- In future, I'd suggest flying into somewhere else - anywhere else - and taking the train to Florence. read more

The Florence airport is pretty small but still pretty efficient. Some of the things we learned on our recent trip: 1. Cab fare from the city center is about $25 euros, takes about 15-25 mins depending on time of day 2. Global blue office is next to the customs stamp office and opens at 6am one the 1st floor 3. Premier first drop box is outside on 0 floor, look for the red box 4. Small duty free shopping just the essentials, candy liqueur, etc, not much designer stuff, better to buy in Florence Give yourself at least 2 hr to check bags and get all your forms done,as well as security read more

Very quaint. 10 gates, one runway, and zero taxiways. Also zero jet bridges, but they do have an entire fleet of buses to take you the 100 meters from your gate to your aircraft. Typical Italian waste. In general, I wasn't expecting much and Florence Airport delivered. Once we cleared passport control, there were a nice selection of duty-free shop and cafe options. You might want to wait as long as possible before heading to your gate as there are not many distractions once you get there. I realize that Pisa is a larger airport and serves more connections, but since I was connection to a large hub from here (CDG), I was OK with it. Pisa is an 1.5 hour train ride from the Florence. The airport in Florence is only about a 20 minute taxi ride, 30 minutes with traffic. Since this is a small airport, you won't feel like OJ running through the airport to get to you gate on time. read more

Mix between Canberra airport before it jazzed up (i.e. there appears to be only one runway and you exit using stairs and taking a bus to the terminal) and Berlin what with the baggage claim area being right by the gates. Two guys were checking for declared goods the day I arrived and so there was quite some delay before could exit. I really was surprised by how small the airport is, but also how close it is located to the city centre. Signs aren't marked that clearly so took us a while to find the taxi rank. Not a lot of amenities although the newsagent shop did sell postage stamps (yay!) and there was a post office box (woot, better than Venice!) Only one coffee shop but their cakes and coffee were decent (chocolate cake was better than the fruit cheesecake). read more

This airport is tiny which can definitely have its pros and cons. I found it easy to navigate, easy to get to my gate, but the food selection here left much to be desired - bring your own food, go to the lounge if you have access (although pickings there are super slim as well), or wait until your next destination to eat. Pros: - Located close to the city center. It took me about 15 min to get there via taxi and it cost 22€ to get there (one-way). - Security was super easy for me - maybe I got lucky on a Thursday morning at 10 am, but there was no line and I was through in just a few minutes. - It's easy to get to your gate (you do have to go through a bunch of duty free shopping), just a few minutes from security and/or from the lounge. You can't really get lost in the airport - it's tiny. - Even though the lounge isn't great (I wrote a separate review on this), at least they have one (and you can access it with Priority Pass) Cons: - Food selection is super dismal here - there's one place outside of security with some ovepriced sandwiches, and then inside there's a food court with 2 choices: pizza that was 5,50€ for a rectangle, and some previously frozen lasagna/pasta, and another place that has some panini sandwiches for 6-8€ with basically just tomato + mozzarella or some cured meat + cheese. I was hungry but didn't buy anything to eat as it didn't look appetizing at all. If you're hoping for one last good Italian meal before you leave out of the Florence airport, you'll be disappointed. Overall, decent airport that is small and serves its purpose of flying in and out, but don't expect anything super comfortable, modern, or fancy. read more

We had to catch a 645 am flight to connect to American Airline in Frankfurt to travel back to the States. Taxi cab from Florence town center was €30 (including luggage handling for 4 people) for the 20minute ride. The streets were deserted and the driver drove like a madman. It's good to see the town one last time, asleep. The airport was already bustling at this early hour (we had similar early hour 6am train from Milan to Pisa and the huge Centrale Station was dead still). Thankfully the food cafeteria was open for business. The airport is smallish but functional. Everything went smoothly and quickly. Our flight left on time. read more
