This place has charmed its way into my heart. Before coming to RIT, I mainly top roped off and on…read morefor about a year with my bf - quite a feat for someone terrified of heights. One of the only reasons I kept going was because I was halfway decent at it. That being said, I'd only ever been to one gym (Planet Granite, San Francisco) and a small handful of outdoor spots. The first time I walked in I was dismayed that only the bouldering section was open and that that the majority of the climbs were on plywood. Not having extensive experience, I was certain that my shoes wouldn't be able to grip and that I'd slip and fall to my doom. During this first time, I also witnessed a girl fall and sprain her ankle badly enough that the school medics had to be called. I made a mental note about how professionally and quickly the gym handled the situation should I ever be so unlucky. After climbing nearly twice a week since January, I love this gym. I love how it has no heat (nice and empty when it's only 15 degrees outside!) and that I can't find the difficulty labels for most of the problems (who doesn't love a challenge?). A lot of the routes feel reachy to me, but that's probably a function of me being short and climbing weird. It doesn't smell as crazy as other gyms but we'll see once it starts warming up. The absolute best part is that it's only $20 a quarter for students. Can't beat that price! I'm looking forward when to when they open up the second floor - anyone need a belay partner? :D

Cool bouldering place. Very simple place but serves its purpose: bouldering. Lots of bouldering…read moreopportunities/levels there!

I knew I was going to be in Kingston for the weekend so I decided to check out the local climbing…read moregym. I was a little bit worried about how to find the place. The photos on Google Maps of the building I think must have been for another location. This is just located in the plaza next to the Dollarama. The entrance is next to the giant mural on the outside of the building across. It is very noticeable. If you haven't been here before, you have to fill out a waiver to use the facilities. You can do it before you first check in with the desk because they'll ask you to do it anyways. I was climbing solo so I was informed the desk I would be using the auto belays. After taking care of the waiver and payment ($23 and change for admission), a staff member walked me around the facility and did a quick orientation. Even if you aren't bouldering, you have to do a quick fall test with them. I also had to do a quick auto belay test for harnessing in and a fall. The Boiler Room has it all - a speed route, top rope, lead climbing, bouldering, and auto belays. The only problem is that it's only a tiny bit of everything that isn't bouldering. The top rope area was extremely small and squishy. It was right against the wall of the building and next to the changing area. I want to say it was around 6-7 feet between the wall of the building and the climbing area. Speaking of, the changing rooms are individual stalls like a fitting room in a store. They each have a small chair and a mirror in there. There are washroom stalls that are individual use and for all genders. They have some lockers at the back. They're the cubby hole sized ones and you need to bring your own lock. This is also a squishy area. There aren't a lot of auto belays. They use dry erase tags to label the difficulty of the routes. The big problem with this is that a lot of the levels were rubbed off so if you are a beginner, you might not have any idea of how hard a problem is. In terms of the difficulty, the routes here don't have a lot of options for how you solve them. It honestly seemed like a tall person set these. There were some holds where you'd either have to jump for them if you weren't long enough. The one other thing about the auto belays is that for some reason they swung a lot. Not sure if it was an issue with the mounting. If bouldering is your thing this would be a good gym for it. Other than that I really wouldn't recommend it for a repeat visit.

A small gym with both roped climbing and bouldering (unroped climbing on shorter walls)…read more Disclaimer: I only came her to boulder so that's what my review will be on. For the space limitations, I think BR makes good use of what's available to them. The route setting for the boulder problems range from easy to very hard and keep you engaged no matter what grade you climb. In my opinion the setting is thoughtful and creative. However, I would imagine that if you're a frequent visitor who climbs harder grades then you would get bored. Granted, I'm not sure how often the routes get changed. The grading is based on colours and not V grades and there's a variety of walls from vertical, slab, to roof/overhang. There's a small shop at the front desk that sells harnesses, shoes, guidebooks etc. What I will say about the roped climbing is that the walls appear rather short so not sure how much you could do if you wanted to lead climb. I've also been told by friends that there are a lot of rules around lead climbing at the facility. I think bouldering is your best bet here. Free parking is available at the lot outside.

She's usually very shy. Very safe and exciting experience. The last platform was pretty scary because you have to step off and go straight down. I froze and couldn't do it, but Audrey talked me through it until she finally gave me a little shove and I was off! Just what I needed!!! Much fun was had by all. Wet and foggy day only added to the experience.

Kids Adventure Park/Rock Wall & Trampoline…read more Did the fall sky ride last year and it was well organized and efficient, this years visit.......not so much. Most discombobulated event ever. One would have thought that this was a new feature and they were working out the bugs. Drove to the summit and parked then walked into the summit area with little if no signage indicating where to go. Stumbled into the Summit Bldg and it turned out to be the correct place to be. Checked in and was told the climbing gloveds were sold out (they did refund) and the kids had no problem with the Resort gloves. The reservation was for 12:30 and the 2 grandkids (5&7) had their harness attached along with 4 other kids and one adult and his older son who were doing the "big kids" courses. As we were standing around a guy came along, maybe to relieve the original girl who was taking some sort of gear out to one of the courses with the father and son. The guys asks what we were doing since we were all geared up and I stated that we were waiting for directions at which point he asked what were we signed up for (one would think just by the size of the kids in the gear it would be apparent what we were all waiting to do.) He gave me hand gesture directions, which were not very good and, again, there was poor signage, but after walking in the general direction of the "hand gesture" a woman coming up from the area gave me a clear indication of where we were to go. It is now 12:50 and the attendant was getting kids ready and asks "where are the trollys"? Having no clue what she is talking about out I said that what ever they were wearing was what they were given. She radioed up requesting 2 kids trollys be brought down. Tick tock, tick tock and after about 10 minutes of waiting for a delivery I walked up to the Summit Bldg where the same mass confusion was going on and I peaked behind the black curtains and asked the employee for 2 kids trollys (this was not the first time she had to radio up for kids trollys either). Finally the kids were able to do the courses. Once their time was up we went over to the rock wall/trampoline area and there are no employees there or within sight to ask about the procedure. Once again I walked up to the Summit Bldg asking if anyone was going to be watching the RockWall/Trampoline and they asked if I had gone by there (seriously?) I replied yes and there was nobody around. They said they would get someone so we walked to our car for water and a snack and by the time we got back the area was stocked with an employee who, by the way, was very nice and helpful. Given the state of the economy with discretionary spending tight one would think that Bristol Mtn would be chomping at the bit to provide the best service/experience possible......but it was not to be. The kids area was not crowded or busy and the chairlift rides seemed to be going without issues from what I saw up top. Hopefully Bristol Mtn will get their act together but either way we will not be returning.

I'm scared of heights and the beginning was very very scary and I couldn't stop shaking but I powered through and by the end I was cruising. It feels good to face your fears! They give you the run down in the beginning and then you practice before going up to the actual courses. There is a center spot where each course starts and at that spot they have benches where you can set down any water bottles or sunglasses etc. There were plenty of workers around which makes you feel safe but it wasn't what I expected (I expected someone to be waiting at each platform). They are available down below and I'm sure they could get up there quickly in an emergency but you pretty much go at your own pace and do your own thing hooking yourself up to the cords. There are safety measures in place such as the locking carrabeaners that never allow you to be unhooked because there are two and one is locked at all times. They have a bunch of courses that are labeled by color according to how difficult it is. If you are even remotely scared of heights then I highly recommend starting with a yellow and working your way up. We started with green and I was super terrified. We did the three hour pass and did four courses (going extremely slow in the beginning). It was awesome to be immersed in nature like that too. We can't wait to come back!!

Drive me nuts that kids events don't start until like 10 so was so excited that Cayuga Clinbs Toddler Time is from 8:30 to 9:45 it's the perfect time for a kids activity. The space is great for letting kids runaround and try climbing. My daughter love finding the cow on top of one of the climbing wall every time we go. Sorry if no one else has found it since she doesn't let go of it easily once she finds it. It's reasonably priced $15 per toddler and you don't have to pay for the adults like you would a children's museum but you do have to watch your own kids. My twins get so excited to go, seriously one of the best events for toddlers in the area. Typically twice a month on Sundays but it does not have a consistent schedule so again get on the mailing list so you're informed when the next event will take place.
