Well, today I completely broke my little toe, and there was absolutely no mistaking it. I looked down at my foot in disbelief when I saw my pinkie toe pointing straight out to the side instead of being aligned with the other toes. It slowly registered what I was looking at and my first thought was, You are deformed for life !!!
I have stubbed my toe plenty of times, but I had never encountered anything that looked remotely like this, and I immediately started wondering how in the world I was ever going to get my foot inside a shoe and actually walk on it.
The 1st thing I did was call my mother because she is a registered nurse.
She told me that there probably wasn't much a doctor was going to do for a broken little toe, so she didn't think I needed to bother going to the ER.
Taking her advice, I decided to try to get it back into alignment myself.
I pulled and bent the toe back toward the other toes and, surprisingly, managed to get it looking much straighter. I taped everything up to keep it in place and figured I could just brave my way through the pain.
Unfortunately, once I had manipulated the toe back into position, the pain really kicked in.
After sitting with it for a while, I decided I really needed an X ray. I wanted to know exactly what I had done and, more importantly, I wanted to make sure that if the toe was still badly out of alignment, a medical professional could do something about it while it was still fresh. So I headed over to AdventHealth Heathbrook ER.
Super impressed from the moment I hobbled through the doors. My Yelp buddies had already told me this was a beautiful facility, and they were absolutely right. It is modern, clean, and well designed.
Everyone I encountered made me feel like they genuinely cared about what was happening with me. I was, of course, a little on the demanding side of things .., I'm sure a broken toe is pretty low on the triage but I never felt like I was being dismissed or treated as though my injury wasn't important.
They took X rays and confirmed what I already knew.... Yes, I had definitely broken my little toe. Unfortunately, they also confirmed that there wasn't anything more they could do to straighten it. I was disappointed because I had hoped they could somehow get it into an even better position, but they explained that it was already as well aligned as they felt they could get it. They put me in a flat unbendable shoe with velcro straps... gave me the appropriate instructions and sent me on my way.
So my mother was right about the fact that there isn't much an ER can usually do for a broken toe. :-((((((((((
I wanted that X ray and I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing with, especially after seeing my toe pointing sideways when I first looked down at my foot.
I really liked AdventHealth Heathbrook. The facility is beautiful and the staff treated me with kindness and professionalism from the moment I arrived until I left. I just wish they could have done a little more for my poor crooked toe, because apparently what I managed to do at home was about as good as it was going to get.... SIGH read more
