Recently, our 86-year old mother was a patient at this facility for 3-weeks. She had no idea that…read moreshe would be checking into a rehab after having shoulder surgery. To say that she did not want to be there is an understatement. The day we checked our mother in we met with many of the team members who would be in charge of our mother. They were all very nice. The facility itself was nice on the inside and outside. There is one team member that I would especially like to thank. His name is Joshua, and he is the Patient Advocate. He met with my siblings and myself along with our mother, the day she was checked in. During the meeting, he was very attentive to my mother which helped make her feel at ease. He listened to every concern we had for our mother. He took notes and followed through with all of the details and concerns that were discussed. Joshua is amazing at his job! He is professional and has a perfect personality to be an advocate. He is patient, understanding, kind, efficient, and very helpful. One day after a really hard physical therapy appointment, no staff members were able to help my mother be put back in her bed. She was miserable while she waited 15 minutes in a wheelchair. I text messaged Joshua and he was there within 5 minutes. I don't believe this is part of his job description. That is how helpful he is. He sweetly helped her back to her bed (they had to use a hoya to lift her in and out of bed). Next, he helped make sure she was clean and comfortable. This meant a lot to us as we watched him truly care for our mother. This is just one example of his kindness. Joshua was truly a life saver when our mother was there. If we could rate Joshua alone, he would receive 5 stars. He truly was wonderful. The problem we had was that the nurses and aides were understaffed. Our mother was fortunate because we were able to take turns to stay with her. The week I stayed with her, hours would pass with no nurse or aide to check on her. Even when the nurse call light was on, it would take at least an hour for someone to come into her room. One morning she was throwing up for over an hour. The aide was made aware of it. She said she would let the nurse know. No one ever came in that day to address the problem. There were other problems as well. It is our belief, that more nurses and staff need to be hired, if they want their patients to receive better care.

Don't bring your loved one here. My 83 year old mother came her to try to regain use of her legs…read moreand hands after a UTI. The biggest problem they have is the nursing staff - they were unresponsive and sat around at the desks the majority of the time. My mom was only showered once in two weeks (they say it's twice a week, it isn't.) Because many of the staff is primarily from staffing agencies, they don't know the patients. The nursing staff that is employed there also is moved around from floor to floor and sections so you rarely get consistent nursing - they too don't know the patient. Since my mom couldn't use her hands to feed herself, get water, or even call for help (still waiting for that "pancake button" which never arrived) , she needed all meals and water to be given to her. For two days the nursing staff did not communicate this during handoff (and apparently charts are a thing of the past.) On the first day I arrived to find her sitting with her meals on the tray in front of her so she could stare at them hungrily, so I fed her. The next day I was working and luckily the CNA figured it out after noticing my mom starting at the food for two meals straight - she confirmed that she had not been updated by the previous nursing staff that feeding and water help was required for this patient. Two days later I found blood in my mom's catheter tube and bag - the nurse shook the bag and sent a photo to a provider who apparently diagnosed through a photo via phone that the urine was concentrated. When I insisted on testing, it took one day to find out it was in fact a UTI and an additional 4 days to figure out what type so it went untreated for 5 days! Additional things: No doctor was on site Food was inedible at times (chicken wings, chicken tenders, salad are examples) TV didn't work without an able bodied person to change the input Clock didn't work Room didn't get cleaned for two weeks - never saw a housekeeper. I wiped the tray table and surfaces, and the patient care coordinator had to sweep and mop the floor when I complained about it. Just know that there are better skilled nursing facilities out there, and this is not it! I'm glad I found one for my mom that truly cares about her.

This is my second time here, and the level of care is just as outstanding as I remembered. Special thanks to Ms. Keirstin for always bringing positivity and making patients feel truly cared for. Huge appreciation as well to PT Cayley and Michaela--both were incredibly patient, supportive, and instrumental in my recovery. I feel like a new person because of them. The entire staff creates a positive, welcoming environment. The gym is full of energy and encouragement, and you truly feel at home while healing. I also want to recognize the overnight nurse who went above and beyond--checking in multiple times during the night and making sure I was comfortable right up to the end of her shift. I highly recommend this facility without hesitation. Exceptional care, compassionate people, and a real impact on recovery

I was grateful they scheduled a time with me to go over all his care for home. It really helped with making the transition to home easier. As a health care provider myself, I could not be happier with the care my husband received at this facility.

Upon discharge the coordinator Rachel did not have our paperwork ready and needed extended time doing so. When I went to pick her up after an email stating I would be there, the paperwork was not complete. At the nurses station the head nurse told me that she has a uti. It is standard practice to keep a patient until medically cleared. I was shown her labs, which clearly showed a uti. I was told to leave and come back between 5 and 6 in the evening. I did and the nurse changed what she had said per the doctor. Stating that it was contamination not a uti. Even though my aunt said it was burning when she urinated and that her back hurt. I took her home and she still said she was having the discomfort. I told her that the doctor said she didn't. She has dementia and developed a severe altered mental status, incontinence, and back pain that became unbearable. We ended up at the ER where she is now with a UTI. North mountain is supposedly the #1 rehab and skilled nursing facility in the valley. I would beg to differ. I emailed the coordinators at north mountain about this with one of them requesting that Rachel reach out to me in regards to our experience. I have yet to hear from anyone. Think twice before choosing them for your loved one.

(the eggs contains soy) Despite this, she gets served eggs. When she lists cold cereal, she gets served cream of wheat. For dinner, she ordered a cheeseburger and gets served a turkey sandwhich with miracle whip, which contains soy. The nurse was nice enough to go go the kitchen and get her what she ordered and she was given another turkey sandwich, being told that they had nothing else to eat (despite the fact it was an allowable substitute on the menu she submitted.)The kitchen also told her they were unaware of any soy issues, even though she writes in it big letters on the menu she submits it. Also, she keeps copies of all her menus so there is ample evidence that this place doesn't care about what the patients want or need. Stay tuned for what's going to go down tomorrow....I'll keep you all posted. Once again, no response from Courtney, the hospital administrator. He doesn't have the courtesy to talk to me about any issues I have raised. I finally got a call from Heidi the interim administrator. She was very nice and dressed all my concerns. It is still a work in progress but at least someone is finally listening.

You can tell immediately that this side is newer. The unit is unique in that the rooms are mostly all shared. It appears that space is limited, and that may explain why. We chose to stay at Barrow, despite shared rooms, because this is thw place with the most specialized rehab for spinal cord injuries. Thankfully, hubby had a room of his own for the entire stay. The rooms, because they are shared, do not have a sofa like other rooms. But they do have a tall cabinet, a dresser, and a really big t.v. on each side of the room. There is a curtain that separate the two spaces. There are two gyms--a physical therapy gym and an occupational therapy gym, which had a robotics gym. The PT gym has a small indoor track, a short set of stairs, a life-size model car front end, a ride of padded tables, and many machines to work out muscles and practice balancing. The OT gym has a couple of padded tables, a table to sit and do activities for fine motor skills, a weight and stretching machine, and some really cool state of the art machines to help with balance and coordination. Hubby got to use a life-size video game in which you use your legs to move a basket to catch the balls on the big screen. Very cool! There is a real "home" complete with a big kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and laundry so that people can learn how to safely function in the home with their new limitations. The staff here is top notch. All of them. From the nurses to the therapists to the PCT's (many of whom are RNs in the PCT role for the day) to the doctors. They are attentive and really rooting for everyone to get better. I can't give them enough praise. Nobody wants to have to be a patient here, but if you need a Neuro rehab center, this one is great.

When I was researching options for my wife's post-surgical recovery, I found very little detailed feedback about the inpatient rehab facility. I hope this review helps fill that gap. Let me start by saying: the treatment my wife received was phenomenal. That's not a word I use lightly. I come from a professional background that emphasizes planning, execution, and a pursuit of excellence, and I was genuinely impressed at every level. The medical care was outstanding. Dr. Bliss and Dr. Linke were not only knowledgeable but also deeply attentive and responsive. When a few complications arose, both physicians intervened promptly and with skill, leaving no room for doubt about their commitment and expertise. The nursing staff deserves praise as well--they were consistently helpful, kind, and ready to go the extra mile. But the heart of this review, and the true stars of the experience, are the physical and occupational therapy teams. Simply put: wow. Whether it's their training, their personalities, or a combination of both, the PT/OT staff at Barrow are compassionate, driven, and remarkably effective. Their ability to connect, motivate, and produce tangible results made a real difference in my wife's recovery. They don't just go through the motions--they care, and it shows. No hospital experience is without its challenges, but this one came remarkably close to faultless. And I say "almost" only because perfection is such a subjective, elusive thing. To the entire Barrow rehab team: kudos. You exceeded expectations in every way. ---
