Just recently moved to Tacoma and needed a primary dentist. Saw this place on Yelp and was so glad I did! I was very impressed with this place. They have screens that they put in front of you while they take pictures of your teeth so you can see everything going on. Honestly, seeing my teeth from that angle really motivated me to floss more. Also during my cleaning, they played tv on the screen to watch! The staff here are super nice and I felt comfortable the whole time. I had a dental emergency and checked every dentist most were closed the rest were booked... the team here was absolutely incredible, understanding and compassionate... they agreed to just look at it and see what was going on with no promises for procedure... they thought I'd have to wait till Monday but after looking at an cray they took they agreed the tooth needed to come out now... they did it in no time and I have no words for how grateful I am! I seen both Dr Gaurav and Dr Xu, I have to admit I like them both. Both of them very knowledgeable, I recently came in for a severe throbbing pain. But I had to come in I saw Dr Xu, I couldn't be more happier. He made me feel very comfortable and I gain a lot of knowledge when I Left. So, I have no issues with getting dental work whatsoever. I've never really had much anxiety or fear of dentists, ever. But I really love this place. I've been going here for about 2 years now, and I would never switch. The staff is friendly and courteous, and they remember who I am and what I've talked to them about in the past. Dr. Xu listens to what I say and does not judge about anything at all, whether it's a cavity, a tongue ring, or whatever. The atmosphere is inviting and warm and the fireplace is a nice touch. My insurance does not cover everything I have needed in the past, but they help me work my care on a financial and necessity basis; I have a say in what I need or want. I can't say enough good things about this office - from the front desk staff to the assistants (Bill, Aleesha and others) , to the dentist, Dr Xu. My dental experience here has been absolutely the best I've had in my lifetime. I live in Olympia and wanted to find an office that understood the issue involved with SAFE removal of the old-style amalgam fillings. Every search pointed to this office - so I decided the drive to Tacoma was worth it ... and it was. After that it was time to focus on my extensive tooth decay, brought about over the past few years from a disease. (Took me a while to figure out what was causing the rapid and extensive decay). Together with the assistance and care of this office I'm facing this problem tooth by tooth. Every person in this office has been so caring, conscientious and professional - I feel so lucky to have found THE BEST possible dental care. There are not enough words to explain how wonderful Dr. Xu and his staff are. I have been a patient for about 8 years, and I am a tough patient for any dentist to deal with. I use to be terrified of the dentist and would have panic attacks in the office. When I first met Dr. Xu he was so nice and patient with me, he joked around with me that one day I would leave his office smiling, and he was so right :) I can honestly say that after 30 plus years of going to the dentist this is the first time in my life that it doesn't scare me anymore. If I could go beyond five starts, I certainly would. Regretfully, it had been sometime since I had visited a dentist. In the past, I always felt as if my oral imperfections were judged or put on display. Today, I was in lots of pain and was forced to search for a dentist, when my wife stumbled upon this group of professionals as a result of an online search. When I initially called, I was greeted with a very caring and empathetic person. She set up the appointment and I was seen, less than two hours later. When I arrived, my apprehensions were strong, yet my discomfort was stronger. I then met Bill, who was a dental assistant. He sat down with me and talked for a few minutes, rather than simply shoving dental instruments down my mouth within minutes. Bill mentioned working for Dr. Shoafan for over twenty one years and I soon discovered that they work very well together. In talking to Bill, I disclosed my embarrassment and apprehension. He assured me that everything would be fine. After meeting with Dr. Shoafan, much like with Bill, he sat down with me for a few minutes and talked before proceeding with addressing my discomfort. This morning I discovered by 4 year old Pappillon used my flipper (a dental appliance I have had for years in lieu of getting implants or a bridge) as a chew toy. I called my dentist of 20 years to discover he was out of town. Fortunately, he referred me to Dr. Xu. I called at 8 a.m. and by 8:04 DeAnna had called me back and scheduled me in the same day. DeAnna was pleasant, totally knowledgeable about dentistry (she has been with Dr. Xu for 10 years) and offered ideas for moving forward with a more permanent replacement. Dr. Xu was able to refit my appliance and we discussed biological compatibility of materials with any dental work I should consider when I do move forward with a bridge. He is also knowledgeable, personable and I would recommend this practice to anyone. read more

I went to the Dentist just before Christmas of 2021 with a toothache. I had just arrived in Tacoma to visit family. I had been to this dentist a few times already. I was seen by Dr Singh. They took xrays of my teeth. They determined I didn't have an infection and was sent away with a small bottle of mouthwash. Well I did have an infection and suffered greatly. I was taking ibuprofen constantly to deal with the pain and ended up breaking out in hives. my Christmas was ruined as I was in a lot of pain and wasn't sleeping hardly at all. I wasn't sure what to do as I had already been to the dentist. when I got back home to Florida, I went to a real dentist who clearly knew I had an infection. He prescribed an antibiotic and my pain was cut in half in less than 24 hours. Dr Singh clearly doesn't know what she's doing and I paid the price! I wouldn't recommend anyone to go there. Dr Xu was a very good doctor but he's retired now. read more

Dr Xu is for everyones health and safety. He is caring and makes sure we are comfortable with any procedures needed. He removed 4 Amalgams I had on one side and will remove the last three. He was so comforting and so gentle, not to mention so knowledgeable about the safety and dangers amalgams cause to ones health. He made sure in the removal he took every precaution for his, the staff and my own safety. Although I cannot get to Dr Xu as my personal routine dentist, I will use him for the rest of my amalgam removel and any extractions, or major dental care I need in the future. I just went to a couple dentists to get some opinions about a problem tooth that has been arritating me for a few years now. Had several xrays done, tooth isn't infected, and just needs a new filling and crown. The entire tooth head is basically formed out of amalgam filling, and when I told the dentist I could not have them work on any teeth that have amalgams, he looked at me like I was crazy, chuckled and said that the hype of the poison in them is just a myth. How idiotic is that!! What is wrong with some dentists!!!! The same day I came home I saw online in the Washington Post that dentists are dying from all kinds of lung issues and brain issues. They say its because they're breathing in the deadly toxins from working on peoples mouths. (Amalgams I'm sure) Crazy! I feel like printing that out and giving it to the dentist that article just said it was only hype. Dr Xu is so caring and made me feel so at ease knowing I have a huge fear of any dental procedures. (I auffer from panic attacks). I am calling that office today to get this tooth resolved. I want it out! I would highly recommend Dr Xu to anyone who wants an absolutely great dentist. I wish he was closer to where I can drive on my own to see him regularly. (I can't venture out any further then city I live in by myself due to anxiety) PS: The hygienist and the front desk staff was amazing also. They do as good a job as the best of the other dentists I have dealt with in my 60+ years. Owing to congental problems, I have had a lot of fillings, crowns, and implants. I started seeing the dentist who started this practice and who had taken Dr. Xu on as a partner. After the older man died, I started seeing Dr. Xu. Dr. Xu did a great job but when he took out a molar with gold crown he just kept it. I switched to a dentist near my house, who incidentally was also from an Asian country. When she removed a crown, she surprised me by giving me the crown and a prepaid mailing envelope. I mailed that crown in and received a significant check in return. Her prices were lower than Dr. Xu's as well. I think it was dishonest of Dr. Xu to keep my crown and take the money for himself. Especially since his prices are high. read more

I honestly could not think of a single reason to take a star off, which is amazing!! I had my teeth cleaned by Patty, she spent about an hour making sure I was comfortable, answering any questions I had, taking x-rays and cleaning my teeth. She did an excellent job. Not only do my teeth feel cleaner, they look cleaner, too! I thought I would need my teeth whitened, but the color is so much improved just after she cleaned them! Bill was very good at explaining things and showing me what's what on the x-rays of my teeth. Dr Xu was very thorough (from what I could tell being on this end of things) with his examination of my teeth. We discussed a couple things cosmetically that I may wind up having done in the future, and he was good at explaining my options. DeAnna was very helpful in explaining how much things would cost, how much my insurance would cover, etc. which was great for me since I haven't had to deal with this before as my parents have always taken care of these things for me. Everyone was very, very friendly and the facility was clean, bright, up-to-date, and they had a lot of new technology I had never heard of. I will be back!! read more

After reading all the rave reviews and a past due teeth cleaning, I decided to give Advanced Dental Care a try. Making an appointment over the phone was simple enough, the receptionist was friendly and I even received a reminder text the day of my appointment. Open entering, the receptionist was talking to another patient and took about 5 minutes before acknowledging me and letting me know that she'd be right with me. Once she finally got to me, she handed me some papers to fill out. There were a few things on the paperwork that took me by surprise; I had to include my drivers license number and a copy of my drivers licence, I have never heard of that before, there were also two separate papers that reminded you in bold letters that if you do not cancel or change your appointment within 48 hours, you get charged $50.00 per hour! What?!? When I asked about the drivers license, the receptionist told me, "If you don't pay, we send your bill to collections." Hmm...seemed kind of sketchy to me. Anyways, to make a long story short; the dental assistant didn't know how to properly use the X-ray equipment, the dentist himself was friendly and knowledgable (although I only spoke with him for about 5 minutes), and the hygienist was average. I experienced a lot of discomfort throughout my teeth cleaning and afterwards my teeth didn't feel that "Hallelujah!" It felt more as though I just gave them a good brushing. What turned me off the most was the same receptionist at the end of my appointment. When I asked about the extra chargers on my bill she answered me in a very rude and sarcastic way. I am fortunate to have been able to pay my bill, but I asked her what happens to the patient who comes in with a certain amount of money for their appointment and at the end their charged $100.00 more than quoted. She said, "We figure it out." Yeah, by sending their bill to collections I'm sure. All in all my appointment went well. I mean I didn't leave worse off then when I came and I scored on some free tooth care stuff. Probably won't be back, but I think their worth a try. Ignore the receptionists horrible attitude and you may have a pleasurable experience. read more

Unfortunately my previous dentist left my mouth tender, always sensitive, food packed around the cap making me chew on one side and just all around discomfort. Going back a few times I finally gave up wondering if I would ever find another good dentist. Our Naturopathic Physician recommended Dr Xu so I finally gathered the guts to go see if something could be done (2 yrs from my last visit), I only had time for a cleaning the first time but decided I liked the attitude and friendliness so wanted to go back. The other day I went back, maybe this is a little early to write a raving review, I'm still wearing the temporary cap but so far I have started losing weight because the leftovers are no longer available, I am saving money on dental floss and the filling and veneers that I also got feel great. The bleaching kit I got from them has brightened my teeth and my wife says she needs to wear shades. life is good. the only issue I have is I want to go back because they are cool people in that office but I really don't like going to the dentist.... The best thing about them is they will put you first. They will work on your teeth and do what is necessary without trying to sell you a bunch of stuff you don't need to do. I've been there and done with that. You want to trust your doctor and I feel that I can trust this one. read more

I have a bottom partial from tooth loss and I have a broken tooth that I wanted extracted today. I took 4 hours off from work to go into the dentist and he told me that you wouldn't extract it because it was a good tooth. He said to me money shouldn't matter it shouldn't matter that the crown is going to be $1,300 and you have to pay 50%. I was embarrassed annoyed but most of all I will never be going back to this dentist. I spoke to the receptionist on my way out and said if I knew dr.wu would not extract my tooth I would not have left work early and use my vacation time to come to this appointment the snotty dental assistant said well we don't know until you come here. They had no acknowledgement to my feelings that I was frustrated that I left work or anyting. When my husband and I went in the past. After every dental appointment they said okay that'll be this amount of money. I said I thought you were supposed to Bill my insurance? They said oh yeah we can do that. I had called Advance Dental Care to look at getting a second opinion on a root canal that my current dentist says that I need. I had heard about the mixed reviews about getting one done and the other alternatives that there might be for me. I talked with Deanna and she informed me about the extensive work that goes into the modern root canal therapy. She was a wealth of information and very patient with my lack of knowledge and didn't make me feel stupid. Dr Xu is undoubtedly a great dentist and a very very lovely person. It's too bad that he has a receptionist (Deanna) who clearly thinks she is God's Gift. She needs a reality check BIG TIME. Also, the male assistant, I think his name is Bill is ridiculous. He has an attitude that he doesn't bother trying to hide in front of the patients, and I can't see a reason why he is even employed there. He's snooty and rude and makes the entire experience unpleasant. Dr Xu needs to invest in some new employees. Went here for a few years. Ended up leaving them because appointment availability. They make you sign up for an appointment 6 months in advance, and when you have to reschedule they tell you there is nothing available for 2 months. dr xu misdiagnosed a condition and kept insisting i had a tooth removed, which would make him more money. But i went to 2 other dentist and to make sure and i knew my tooth was healthy and i actually had some genetic disorder after another dentist took a biopsy of a gum tissue. So i was able to save my healthy tooth from Dr Xu's misdiagnoses and staffs persistingly calling me to remove my tooth and i kept telling them no thanks my tooth is healthy.... I have never had a deep cleaning, so when I was scheduled for another appointment for one after my regular cleaning, I thought that was strange. The woman that did my so called "deep cleaning" , only spent 40 minutes on me, and I couldn't even feel her working because she hardly did anything. They charged like $400 and along with the regular cleaning, that they made me get before I did the deep cleaning, it was over $500. They have a policy that if you pay cash, which I do, and it's over $500, you get 5% off. But on top of the bogus cleaning they did, they said they were separate appointments and one cleaning had nothing to do with the other and I could not add them together for the discount. Now, 3 years later, that I have had a real deep cleaning that was 2 appointments, with anesthesia, and several painstaking hours of scraping, I know that this place is all about the money. I'm going to file a complaint with the BBB, because having a regular cleaning along with a deep cleaning, isn't even done by other dentists. Beware. read more
