Business owner Bryan Smith no longer appears to own or operate this business in Raleigh; instead the website https://clockrepairraleigh.com/ now indicates the new name "The Horologist" "Formerly The Clocksmith Raleigh". New Owner is listed as: Malik Godwin. Repeated phone calls, text messages and emails to this business went unanswered, until July, 2019 when Bryan Smith stated he was having significant health issues and to have patience which I have had up to now. However, January, 2020 it will be one year later, and I don't have my Grandfather clock movement, repaired or otherwise. It should be noted, the Raleigh BBB website needs to be updated to reflect the ownership change.

We have a family cuckoo clock that hangs on the wall which we had bought on a trip to Europe over…read more50 years ago. It is a European clock with the original Dutch movements. A few years ago, it started to develop problems, running erratically and with the 2 drop weights which power the clock occasionally descending unequally. The time could be off by large amounts, even a few hours. In Dec. 2020, Clocktiques sent a technician, Jason, to our house. We told Jason the history, including the age, of the clock. He claimed that the problem was principally due to the fact that the 2 drop weights were not identical and he made an adjustment. About 6 months later, the same performance problems returned. I left my clock at Clocktiques for approximately 2 months and was charged a few hundred dollars for the repairs (I note that the charge for Jason's previous work was not reimbursed). For a few months the clock functioned well, but over the next couple of years, the issues not only returned but became worse: the clock would stop completely every few months, or so. I called Rick, the owner. I then dropped off my clock for several weeks at Clocktiques. They checked the clock and told me the issues were resolved. However, the problems returned. I decided to look for a different repair shop. In Sept. 2024, a shop in Raleigh told me that my clock needed a major overhaul. They opened up all of the internal workings, including repairing/replacing some of the bushings. The technician said that the serious problems had probably been present for at least a few years, and possibly much longer. After about 2 months in the shop and charges of a few hundred dollars, my clock is now running fine (and is under lengthy warranty coverage). I called Clocktiques demanding an explanation, but Rick was not able to provide one. I am deeply disappointed with the service I received at Clocktiques. While the shop carries an attractive and catchy name, my experience suggests otherwise. This is reminiscent of your taking your car to the mechanic when you hear a loud noise from the engine. The noise goes away for a while after you have paid a large "repair" bill but, then, months later, the car stops running as you find out you what you had actually needed was an engine overhaul in the first place.

The guy who worked on my machine made it worse and unusable…read more December 12, 2025, I took my heavy duty sewing machine which I had had for 50 years of great sewing to 1908 Cartier Ruby Lane in Raleigh. I was working on a project for a Christmas gift. Every place I called could not get my sewing machine back to me for weeks. In my search I ran across this company which ended up being in a house in South Raleigh. He assured me he could get it to me the next day. I was elated and took it to this foreigner who gave me a card with Fox Sewing Machine and Repair call (209) 420-5084 on it. I had one problem: The needle would not stop going up and down when I locked the wheel to reload my bobbin with thread. When I got it home, the problem was still there. I took it back the next day. On the second pick up he stated he changed a round rubber ring in the wheel and demonstrated that it worked. I took it it home and sat down to finish my project with great anticipation. Oil was coming out on the table; the wheel wouldn't stay locked when I needed to reload the bobbin and the top tension won't stay where I put it. It was a mess! Every few stitches I had to reset the tension. It took forever between resetting the tension and trying to get the sweet spot that locks the wheel that might lock one time and not the next. Eventually it would not lock at all. I ended up having to get a new machine. I wasted $100 on this man.

I wanted to find the metal property marker at my home. My backyard neighbor had encroach on my…read moreproperty and built a fence. I hired a land surveyor to tell me where the property lines are. The neighbor removed the stakes and covered the marker with grass seeds and hay so that it is not obvious. He recently moved (thank God), so I wanted to put a new fence up at the correct property line before another neighbor moves in and I have the same conflict. I was trying to rent a metal detector but thought better because I am handicapped. I looked up local companies and Marvin had 5 star reviews, so I called him Tuesday morning. I had to explain the problem several times to Marvin. He suggested that I hire a land surveyor. I explained to him that I'd hired one this year but the neighbor removed the stakes. I sensed that he was hesitant. He said that he had trouble with a neighbor "some 20 years ago" and had to find the metal cap and that he wasn't a land surveyor, and couldn't go into the fence. I explained again that the metal disk is on the outside of the fence but wanted it clearly marked. He said that he could put a "metal stob" there and I confirm that this is what I wanted. He asked for my address, so I texted him. He finally said that he charged $40 for his service and $40 for mileage. I asked where was his office because I saw on Yelp that he was local. He told me Garner. I said, "Sir, I'm off of Jones Sausage Rd, on Rock Quarry (which 8 miles). $80 dollars to find a marker plate on the outside of the fence is extremely high. I want to get it done sooner than later, but I thought that I may find someone else. I told him that I would think about it and call him later. An hour or more later, he calls me and said that he could do the job for $60 including the mileage, and could be here at 10:30 tomorrow. I kept saying that he seemed hesitant about if he could or should do it, and that I am 10 minutes away, but he continued to talk and said he'd see me tomorrow. Again, I want it done but we live 8 min apart and he wants to charge me a $20 mileage fee?! I texted him back and explained that I decided not to use his service; because I had to keep explaining to him what I wanted, that he was so hesitant, and that a $20 mileage fee was extremely expensive; though cheaper than $40 that he initially wanted, it was too much. He responded, "ok" with a thumb up emoji. Gas has increased but $20 to $40 in the same general area is in my opinion, taking advantage.
