If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I never felt completely comfortable in that office. The only reason I stayed and stuck with them, despite all the problems I had faced was that Dr. Carfagno led me to believe he was willing to allow me to have a VBAC so long as everything was healthy, and it was. But when push came to shove, and I went to my 38-week appointment, I left feeling devasted. During my appointment, Dr. Carfagno presented me with paperwork, my personal stats on Shoulder Dystocia (even though my baby is in the 39th percentile for weight) and risks for repeat C-Section. I immediately started crying, not because I was scared about my baby getting stuck, but because I was looking at the risks for having a repeat C-section and he wasn't giving me any leeway to labor naturally. I was already put in the system for a repeat C-section without my knowledge or choice of date, and I allowed him to leave it because he told me I could cancel or reschedule it. We had a plan and that plan went out the window at 38 weeks. I asked him if we could change my appointment to later so I had a chance to labor naturally, and he told me he "didn't know" and I also asked him the latest he'd go, to which he said not beyond 40 weeks. I could accept his position on not wanting to deliver me later in the game but he made no attempt to give me an option to have a VBAC, so I signed a paper for the C-Section he had scheduled. I felt defeated but I asked him multiple times if I could change my mind at any point for any reason, to which he told me that I could but that I'd need to resign the paperwork. When I got home, I cried on and off for hours, I called other doctors and midwives to see if any of them would be willing to take me on, but because of how late in my pregnancy I was, everyone told me the same thing, they could not accept me this late in the game. After speaking with my husband, he said we should call his office and see if they can figure out the dates for pushing the C-section to 40 weeks so I could have a shot at laboring on my own. There was a slot open on my actual due date, so I wouldn't even be going over 40 weeks and we could change it to then. I was so relieved. All they needed to do was just tell Dr. Carfagno. Everything felt like it was going to be okay... until it wasn't. Until my phone rang and it was Dr. Cargagno himself, who began to berate me and lecture me over changing the plan. Who told me I said I didn't want a VBAC even though I had NEVER said those words. He kept repeating that I signed paperwork, to which I reminded him he told me I could change my mind and that I was changing my mind, that I was told by him he didn't know about the dates and he didn't want me going over 40 weeks. And so I found a date that WAS open and DIDN'T place me over 40 weeks but allowed me what I had wanted all along. What I had made clear was always a goal for me if possible. I informed him I felt like he was bullying me because he did not hear my voice or care about what I wanted for my body and my baby. This was something he had told me I could do in previous conversations and he was changing the game on me. I told him I would come in and resign anything he needed me to, that I'd put whatever I had to in writing, but that I was firm about not wanting a C-Section before I've even carried to 40 weeks. He didn't bend. He even told my mother when I didn't wish to speak to him anymore, that he did not care about my feelings or emotions, that he was there to provide sound medical care and that was that. But sound medical care is half bedside manner, which he lacks in spades. I wish I had seen this coming. I was the patient. He was someone who was supposed to provide care whether he wants to or not, or likes it or not, at one of the most vulnerable times in my life. He was someone in power who bullied me and made me feel trapped. I lost my voice. I lost my choice and because of him, I can no longer even have a shot at something I have wanted and desire. Because of him I no longer have any say over being cut open. I couldn't trust him anymore, I no longer felt comfortable with him caring for me or bringing one of the most precious things to me into this world. The only doctor I was able to find who was willing to take me this late on, was not someone who does VBACs. I am devastated. I feel robbed of something that he had no right to take. I will not be quiet about this, I will spread the word as much as I can, not because of myself but because I want to warn other women. Women who deserve the right to make their own choices. I don't want this to happen to anyone as it happened to me, nobody should be forced to be cut open against their wishes. And while he didn't hold my hand down when I signed those papers, he didn't work with what I wanted and tried to bully me when I stood up. And that...that is why I would never recommend him. read more
