    pontoon rental

This is my 5th year renting from Vacation Pontoon rentals. Rex and his team are professional and…read moreknowledgeable. The boats are maintained, properly equipped and run well. They are easy to contact, punctual at delivery and pickup and respond to any problems. I highly recommend them.

0 Stars. Avoid renting from Rex Carroll and Vacation Pontoon Rental AT ALL COSTS! My family rented…read morea tritoon boat from them last week. The first red flag was that they charged me the full price of the rental immediately (about a month before my rental dates). This was not a pending charge on my credit card, but a posted charge in the amount of $2150 for weekly rental (ridiculously expensive, by the way). This is not a standard practice in the rental industry (e.g., rental cars), and is highly problematic. Another red flag is that they offer a discount if you pay with check, which thankfully I did not do. More on that later. We picked up the boat Saturday morning from Rex's assistant, Phil, at the lake's public access point. First, Phil stepped in duck poop and tracked it throughout the entire boat and didn't offer to clean it. I ended up cleaning the boat when we drove it to our pier. In the afternoon, we took the boat out on the lake for our first ride. Within 15 minutes, there was a loud double-pop sound from the engine that was so loud, people from the shore heard it. The engine promptly died and would not restart. We called Phil, who attempted to guide us through troubleshooting, but this failed. We had to get towed by bystanders back to our pier. Phil arrived at approx. 5PM, while we were at dinner. Phil asked for help with trying to test the boat, so my dad, brother, and I left our dinner early to go help. Phil concluded that he had no idea what was wrong with the boat and that he would have to take it out of the water and back to their mechanic. Phil didn't bring a tow-boat, so he decided the only option was to tow it out through our yard with his truck/trailer. We helped him by guiding his truck, moving the boat to our beach (my brother was in the water at multiple points, while Phil basically refused to get in the water despite it being his job). Due to the shape of the beach, Phil's truck couldn't completely lower the trailer into the water and so he was unable to tow the boat fully out of the water. Further, now the boat was stuck on his trailer because it wasn't submerged in the water and too heavy to push it off. So now his truck was stuck in the sand on the beach, the boat was stuck on the trailer, and the grass on the lawn was destroyed from Phil's truck. We had to ask our neighbors to come tow the rental boat off Phil's truck and into the water, so we could redock it and leave it until tomorrow when they could bring a boat to tow it away. At this point it was pitch black outside, so driving it to the public ramp was not possible. So not only did we lose an entire day with the boat, but we wasted almost three hours helping Phil, Phil's truck caused significant damage to the lawn, and we had to ask our neighbors to help us after Phil's stupid idea failed. However, I remained positive because Phil ensured me that Rex would refund us. The next morning, Rex called and told me he was coming to tow the boat, but may not have a replacement boat since another renter also needed their one spare boat. I tried to tell him that we had decided we didn't want to proceed with another rental, I just wanted him to come get his broken boat and refund us our money -- but he told me he couldn't talk further at that moment and literally hung up on me. Rex was over an hour late to tow the boat because the other boat he brought ALSO had mechanical issues (he told me this over the phone). When he arrived to tow our boat, I told him we didn't want his other boat. There was no way I was going to deal with more mechanical issues on our 4-day trip and the company had already proved themselves unreliable. Rex was visibly disappointed. He condescendingly said "This kind of things happen when you rent things, like when you rent a car." I told him I have never experienced any major mechanical issues with a rental car. I told him that I wanted to forget this ever happened and wanted our refund, at which point he sailed away and said we would "talk later". Later, Rex texts me saying he was not giving me a full refund because we didn't want the other "nice" boat he brought. Even though he had to bring the other boat anyways to tow the first boat. When I challenged this, Rex and his staff began ignoring my texts/calls. I never heard from Rex again. When I called his assistant, she said that Rex told her we had agreed to them keeping $400 (the entire security deposit plus $100). Rex never discussed that with me, and it is also arbitrary and unlawful. I calculated what we would owe him based on the contract, and it was less than $80. If you subtract the hours we spent helping Phil and the costs to fix the yard, they would owe US money. I had to contest the charges with my credit card (DON'T give these people a check). Thankfully I have recovered all of the money, but these people are corrupt morons. Don't ever rent from them.

Tecumseh Paddling Company - Nice places along the river

Jen and Mark were so friendly and flexible. The river was low (making for some bottom-scraping…read moreadventures), but Mark was sure to alert me to that fact before our trip. They have a variety of trips to choose from, ranging in difficulty from an easy paddle in the pond to a more advanced 5 hour trip. I will be going back next season!

This is a great place to "get your feet wet" if you are new to kayaking (sorry, had to do it!) I…read moresay that because it is an easy put-in with lots of help from the staff. Water is calm and wide-open from the launch site so you have plenty of time to get your sea legs before you set off. Excellent place for groups or families. Very affordable. Singles are $10 for one hour rental, $15 for two. Doubles are $15/20. Life jackets, complimentary! There is a much longer trip you can take, but I can't give pricing or comment since we did the shorter route. Standard disclosures and waivers must be signed. Staff give you all the low-down on the routes and what you can expect to see along the way. It was fun to paddle both open lake and river sections. On the lake we mingled with swans and lily pads, on the river we enjoyed some beautiful and quiet spots with overhanging trees and a nice, gentle current. Although this review is for the paddling company where you rent your equipment, I will add a brief note to say it is located in Indian Crossing Trails Park and there is a public, free launch in the same location. So if your friend has a kayak, but you don't, no one is left out! The park itself is a lovely location with convenient parking for kayakers bringing their own or renting.
