The unit had been cleaned over the years and 6 years ago, after I got divorced, I had a chimney cleaner come out and he told me the unit should have been vented out the side because of the type of unit it was. He still got on the roof and checked things out, but charged me a $60 for coming out, even though he didn't do anything. I haven't used the unit since. Last year, I heard a bird in the pipe and it even got down into the stove and I had to rescue it. I've since heard other birds in there, so I reached out to A+ Chimney Sweep to have them clean the chimney and check the cap. I figured a second opinion wouldn't hurt and they can at least clean the chimney from the roof, even though I had no intention of going back to using the woodstove. Now, I admit I'm very naïve when it comes to chimney/fireplace stuff, but I totally feel taking advantage of as a single woman trying to have her home serviced. Chris came out and without going on the roof, told me that there is a cap on my chimney and there is nothing he can do about the birds, they can still get in. I told him what the previous guy told me about the stove inside and he agreed that it was poorly installed and he couldn't clean it, then he proceeded to tell me nothing could be done and he had to charge me the full $170 for coming out. When I showed my disbelief, he responded that he should actually charge me more for the 30 mile/hr roads to get here. As far as I know, they are only in Sparrowbush which is just over 1/2 hr from me. I asked if he could at least get on the roof and clean from there and he said no, he doesn't want the liability because the stove isn't properly installed. Totally disappointed and feeling ripped off.

Joe answered the phone and we discussed the work I needed done (chimney sweep and inspection). He gave me a quote over the phone and set up an appointment to come do the work. The price was very fair. When Joe arrived, he went straight to work and cleaned out my chimney. He took the time to caution me about a loose damper and explain how to safely manipulate it. When he was done cleaning it, there was no sign that he had cleaned it - the surrounding floor was spotless. This is where some businesses would take advantage of people: Joe inspected the chimney and advised me that it was in good shape. Other companies might try to drum up business here. The IPAD was suddenly missing. We tore the home apart and searched until the next day before placing blame on anyone. The owner of Chimneys Best said Its impossible that anyone from his crew stole it and he offered for his cousin who is trooper to trace it. Unfortunately, since the IPAD we bought our daughter for her 6th grade graduation never left the confines of our home we did not put the tracer on and it was also unlocked so no matter what the offer was it would be untraceable. We filed a police report but nothing came out of it. I should have taken the day off and been vigilant the entire time but since we moved to a small new town I suppose I was too trusting. I do not think the owner of Chimneys Best stole it but Im 100% sure someone in his crew did.
