Unreliable and Unprofessional - Choose B.O.B. Rafting Instead Booked a 2pm rafting trip with ARO back in June and even confirmed the day before. Yet at 10am on the day of the trip (Aug 1), they abruptly canceled, saying they couldn't fill the boat. When I asked why they didn't tell us earlier so we could make other plans, the rude staff admitted they were hoping more people would sign up last-minute. I was promised a call back from management--never happened. They refused to run the trip with just two people. Thankfully, I called B.O.B. Rafting and spoke to Bob directly--he got us on the water  and we had a fantastic trip with a great guide, Scott. All the rafting companies use the same stretch of the Black River, but B.O.B. treated us with respect and reliability--unlike ARO, which put profits over customer experience. Go with B.O.B. My BF and I had a great time doing the Indian River/Hudson River whitewater rafting excursion (class 3/4 rapids) yesterday. The preparation felt very organized and systematic. I appreciate how we were placed with other couples and adults in our age range instead of the 26 boy scouts. Billy was an awesome guide! He knew how many paddle strokes it took to avoid the wrath of each set of rapids. The lunch was also great! There is a special meal item called "river treats" which was sweet and appropriately filling. The ride ends directly by the base camp, so only 1 bus trip was needed. I would highly recommend ARO to anyone interested in whitewater rafting in upstate NY. read more

Where do I start? Our trip with Adirondack River Outfitters was excellent from the time we hopped on the bus for the launch site to the time we carried our raft out of the river. We had a really great time; all thanks to Madd Pupp Bill, who was our adventurous, knowledgeable guide. We really lucked out in getting Bill as our guide. He was willing to do things other guides wouldn't, making our experience all the more enjoyable. We definitely love how he let two people lie down on their stomachs in front of the raft and get a VIP seat to the splash from the rapids. Bill is a very knowledgeable guide not only in terms of knowing the rapids but also the history of the area. He was great at describing the various falls (along the river) and how each sections got their names. He made sure that each one of us had a great experience, but at the same time, safe. He was very down to earth, and I definitely felt safe facing the more powerful spring rapids. I could go on about stories from the trip but this review can't be that long, so...in summary, it was truly a pleasure! Thanks Madd Pupp! We'll be back! read more

My wife, 2 kids (16 and 7 years old), and I just went on a full day trip down the Hudson and it was a blast. Our guide was great (Dean - a.k.a. Dingo - he was from Australia) and provided a lot of cool information about the area we were rafting down. He was also pretty funny and entertaining, and seemed like an overall nice guy. I would recommend this trip and this company for white water rafting. The day starts early (you have to be there by 9 am to suit up) and you get back around 3:30 pm. Afterwards, they have a great BBQ and throw in some beer. I thought the day was a great value and the kids, my wife, and I had a blast. Please note however - you do need to be careful and accidents, can and do happen. While we were entering the water, a lady actually slipped while placing the raft in the water and was taken back to the main office. I was later told at the end of the day that she broke her hand. If you choose to do this outing, be careful. The rocks are slippery and everything is wet. Wear some Teva's or find some good water shoes. read more

First time whitewater rafting & it was a lot of fun! We picked a place at random, but I didn't realize how much the guide & the organization of the group would play into our experience. Firstly, I like the place. The gear was damn near new. It's the kind of thing you don't think about until you're given a smelly helmet & a flimsy paddle and asked to have a good time. Organizational skills were good too. We left on schedule, were given instructions on the bus & more instructions on the raft. By the time I hit the water, I felt good about it. They had windbreakers for those who came poorly prepared & got cold. Also, they had a snack halfway through and then a full dinner and beer waiting when we got back. Basically these are ALL of the things that I didn't know I wanted until I was out there. So I was exceptionally grateful to have them. Secondly, our guide (Steve) was a saint. If I were asked to lead a group of lazy complainers that were unwilling to listen to basic commands and collaborate; I would probably throw them overboard. Thankfully he has his own approach, which worked better. When the group got lazy, he picked up the slack and never said a word about it. When those who refused to listen to instructions (predictably) fell overboard and complained about it, he made it a fun experience for them. Made a joke out of it until they cheered up. When the larger part of the group (6/8) spoke to each other in Russian, he entertained us with information about the wildlife around the river, some personal stories and tried to engage the group again. Any one of these things could have ruined my trip. Yet, I'm sitting here writing this review thinking about my next visit to ARO. read more

I felt the profundity of the Hudson River the moment I tilted backwards and sank a few feet down! What a exhilarating 17 mile trek along the Hudson! I discovered the Adirondack River Outfitters via Groupon and decided to be adventurous. Professionalism, passion and value make this company a favorite in upstate New York. A friend of mine and I signed up for the 17 mile Hudson River trip that lasted approximately 5 and a half hours. Dingo, our river guide, made this trip unforgettable. Dingo's knowledge and experience about the Hudson offered us wonderful information about the history of the Hudson. I highly recommend Dingo if you decide to use this company for your trip. If you don't, you're missing out! The expedition consisted of many waterfalls, dips, wild turns, and adrenaline packed action! I have two highlights. We had a chance to climb an enormous rock, reaching about 12 feet from the surface of the water and then jump from it! Imagine that! Next, I got a little extra action when I fell off the raft going through a class 3 rapid. This was a fun fall though (and we could have avoided it, but we all secretly sign up for it). This made the trek even more exciting! I feel ready to embark on a class 4 or 5 next time! Once you have reached the end, a delectable chicken BBQ awaits, served with all the sides! Pasta salad, herbed butter, bread salad, and best of all: A cooler packed with cold beer! This is all included in the low price. No hidden fees! I am looking forward to returning soon! read more

Awesome time with ARO! We live in Manhattan & just wanted to get out of the city for some adventure. Saw that ARO had a special until the end of June for $60. After reading reviews, decided we would give them a try. So glad we did!!!!!! They are very organized, which meant a lot because we heard there would be something like 57 rafters, which made us a little concerned at first. This was not even an issue. They gave the best safety briefing I've ever heard. They took half out on a short shuttle ride to the take out place. Then returned for the other half. Our guide, Dingo, was the best!!!!!! He went through the different commands & had us practice them first. He had extra splash jackets on board in case anyone got cold or wanted to keep a little dryer. You will get wet but that's a good thing - the better the Rapids, the wetter you get!!!! He's funny, very safety conscious, and told great stories about the geology & history of the area during the slower portions. I cannot describe enough how wonderful he is! After the 17 mile ride, we ended up right at their building. They had an amazing lunch waiting for us with bar-b-qued chicken, salads, beer, & other drinks. After shooting the Rapids, you're pretty well spent - your arms & core got a great workout!!!!! We've done a bit of rafting in the past in a lot of different places & I will recommend this place to anyone who asks - you won't be disappointed!!! read more

We have done quite a bit of whitewater rafting, and this was one of our favorites! The entire staff was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. Safety is clearly a priority. Our guides, Megan and Mason, provided us with a fun adventure and even provided some history about the area along the river. My sister and I scheduled a 2:00pm trip and, because of a party of eight who were inconsiderate and running nearly two hours late, the trip did not start until 3:45pm. Shame on ARO for allowing this to happen, and shame on the late party who were arrogant enough to pull it off! ARO did not care about inconveniencing the other 28 people who arrived on time, and ARO obviously has no respect for the time of others. ARO does not honor its scheduled trip times...it's a "come when you want to" type of outfitter. A 4.5 hour trip turned into a 7 hour trip. I have used this outfitter in the past, but do not plan to use them again. My trip guide was awesome, but he could not make up for an almost 2 hour late start time. PLEASE BEWARE!!! read more

We had a really good time rafting with ARO on the Hudson in July. Their guides have decades of experience, and know the river like the back of their hand. Other companies have guides that look like teenagers. Our guide was Kevin, who I highly recommend. I have to admit, when we first arrived we had the impression that it was a little bit disorganized, but by the end of the day we realized that wasn't the case. read more

This was my first time white water rafting and it was great !!. We went down the Hudson river (~17 miles) which at the time was a category three (aka grade 3). The trip with Adirondack River Outfitters (ARO) included the rental equipment (paddle, lifejacket, helmet, boots and wetsuit if needed), the white water rafting experience with a guide and a homemade chicken barbecue at the end. Our guide Critter was very experienced and more importantly hilarious. He made the experience entertaining, fun and educational. The day was clear and the sky was beautiful, as were the scenic views of the forest and mountains. Midway we stopped and pulled over for a power snack (granola, honey and peanut butter wrap) with lemonade. I am definitely going back for more white water rafting adventures with ARO. read more
