There is a public toilet close to hand and the gentle grassy walkways around the park area, so it's not all about hard work, but you can stretch and bend into shape with these fine old school gym machines... not many moving parts involved. Beside the renowned brewery reaching over the Torrens and connecting the city to the greater West is this bridge that you wouldn't even know you were crossing these days, but if you stopped at the parking available around here, say to look at the Christmas lights or the brewery park you would notice the wishing well and the monuments describing the historical significance of this spot.

Hindmarsh Town Hall (which now houses the Education Development Centre) is one of my favourite…read morebuildings in Adelaide. Situated on Port Rd, the hall was built in 1860, and then refaced in 1936 when a cinema was added. SImilarly to many old cinemas, it was done in the Art Deco style - one of the most enduring architectural styles of the 20th Century (or at least I think so!). It has been maintained quite well - the pared back vertical patterns and iron-wrought windows still look beautiful. Art Deco originated in France in the 1920's, but took off around the world - embraced by entrepreneurs who wanted to appear modern and at the forefront of the cinematic era.

I only vaguely remember when this place was operation because I was only a kid, or rather a…read moreteenager, when this gaol was closed and turned into a museum. Actually, it's pretty cool, and not too pricey to go for a wander through as well. There is lots of information regarding the various walls, as well as grafitti that has been left over (if that happens to be prisoner grafitti). The thing I found most interesting, even though it was mentioned nowhere, is how the gaol was built as a panoptacon, that is with the guards in a central watchhouse where they can pretty much see all over the prison. It's quite interesting, especially seeing how gaols like this actually operated.

The Adelaide Gaol is a very eerie place, but don't worry it's pretty interesting! While I was…read morelooking into all the cells I got this feeling that I was being watched... but I didn't worry about it! You could go in the small library they had. You could go in the solitary confinement cells. Around the place was these plaques and you could read the stories of what happened. Wondering through the courtyards was cool and peeping through the cell bars was also cool. It's a massive place with a lot to offer. There's even ghost tours! Overall I would solidly recommend anyone to go there!

The Bakewell underpass has only been built in the last few years and it is something of a boon to…read moretravelling out of the city heading West towards either West Lakes, Henley Beach, Underdale or towards the Southern suburbs via Marion road for example. There are a few things to be very pleased about: it has a dedicated bike lane running on both sides of the road, it has a broad and separate pedestrian walkway keeping sensible people well off the road and it has a pretty good design all around. The things to be careful of: it has become a favourite spot for the police to set up their breath testing station - at the bottom of the underpass - yes at the bottom - so you may be coming along quite unsuspecting of any problems... and bang, you are being pulled over to have a breath test. The other thing to be aware of is the built in hidden radar system that will fine you automatically if you are driving over the limit through the underpass. One favourite money making revenue grabbing trick in Adelaide is this radar and it behaves like a speed camera which is the other favourite revenue raising trick - the difference here is you are not likely to know what's happened until you get your fine in the mail, so be warned. If you speed you will get fined.

The Thebarton Police Barracks is only really a part time museum as such, but it is an historical…read moresite that you will pass if you ever go out along Port Road from the city, and if you visit the Adelaide Goal you will see it very close up indeed so it is a notable space to view from the relative safety of the street. The historic buildings are Worth a look and it is also great to get the feeling of how it would have been in days gone by. Their web site has many facts and photographs, and contact details for the voluntary committee who run the museum, you can make contact and arrange a guided tour of the Barracks with them for groups of 15 or more at under ten dollars a head. Obviously it was in the best interests of the community to have a large conglomeration of police close to the goal just in case there was an attempted escape, and the convicts needed shooting en mass, so they really positioned the barracks in a very clever spot. It is still used as a police facility and is not somewhere you can wander about, but it is certainly worth an inspection from the road if you are out that way visiting the goal or riding around on the bike track. There are some older horses in the paddocks behind the historic goal and goats as well, and you may see some of the city police heading out on their horses to do some beat work. If you do encounter police on duty do not disturb them or they are likely to arrest you for disturbing the police... uh... I mean their peace. Ah ha, I jest obviously. The SA Police are a friendly lot dressed in blue and carrying arms, not only those attached at the shoulders.

My memories of Santos are high-school sports days and shitting myself at Little Athletic…read morecompetitions. Because it is like a real sporting stadium, you feel famous (and extremely intimidated) for the whole 5 minutes you are competing. The equipment is good quality. The turf is good, the javelin and discus ring is good and so is the long jump pit. Definitely the best athletics venue in Adelaide. It is always amazing competing here in contrast to your home ground. One thing I have to say about Santos is that it gets stinking hot. Not just a bit hot, absolutely boiling. I remember one day I was competing the track got up to 45 degrees and there is very little shade. The stands are quite large and all under shelter (thank-god) but the seats definitely aren't the most comfortable!

Santos Stadium is where little athletics and all things SAPSASA have their moment of fame. I have…read moreplayed a few cup rounds here for soccer and it's home to a pretty decent pitch. A pretty wide pitch too from memory. There is a dated yet efficient grand slams, fairly good members areas and change room. Overall an efficient athletic venue for all sorts of track and field events. There is also a substantial amount of parking however it can be a little bit of a maze when trying to find the entrance... especially if you're coming in from the city, and are driving over the bridge on Sir Donald Bradman Drive. If this is the case then chuck a right down Railway Terrace and keep your eyes peeled for the entrance. Otherwise perhaps get your GPS out. You don't want to miss your game. Believe me.
