We spend a month each summer on the Oregon coast. Our four year old son has been doing Tae Kwon Do, so I wanted to find him an opportunity to do martial arts during the month away from home. Seaside, OR is very lucky to have such a great Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club in their midst. If you're looking into martial arts, specifically jiu jitsu, this is a great place to begin, develop, and get good. We stopped in while on vacation and everyone was extremely welcoming. They covered some great BJJ moves in the advanced class, and a lot of great sparring with a variety of belts in the competition class. I personally liked how they leaned into a well known competition loss from about a decade ago. I remember that occurring when we started our jiu jitsu journey, and love how it created so much growth and development in his game. Looking forward to visiting again. I am visiting Seaside with my family and wanted to get some training in while I was here. I stopped in for the 8:30am Friday class and met some really cool people. The instruction was detailed enough for colored belts to learn from, but also simple enough for a beginner to learn. They had a great warmup that was easy enough to get the blood pumping but not too hard that I felt pooped before the actual class started. The school has a really cool, relaxed feel to it and I love the mat setup. I was able to drop in, sign a waiver, and train without paying a drop in fee (which I would have totally been fine with too). They're a cool bunch of people and I highly recommend you stop in if you're in the area, or check it out if you're looking for a great package deal of self defense, confidence building exercises, and community. Both Professors Zach and Nate provide quality instruction and are very attentive. They pay attention to the technique that the students are drilling and offer quality feedback. Their Jiu-Jitsu is on point and very technical. The gym is a good size with plenty of mat space for the many training partners/students at this gym. I've been a member of Seaside Jiu Jitsu Academy for about 10 months now, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I'll break my review into two sections. The Art - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that descended from Judo in the 1920's and is primarily focused on ground grappling. Instead of striking with the fists or feet, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner uses leverage and body mechanics to gain a dominant position on an attacker, minimizing violence. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ is a martial art used by every reputable self defense teacher in the world for one reason. It works in real life. It's also fun, addictive, and it's safe to train for almost anyone - that's why people KEEP doing it, year after year. And then there's the fitness aspect of BJJ, which just can not be overstated. I spent years doing crunches and lifting weights - it took 3 months for me to be in the best shape of my life doing BJJ three times a week, and that's a fact. The Gym- Seaside Jiu Jitsu is an awesome gym, full of awesome people. I felt welcomed right away, and every single person I've met there has been cool. The rates are fair, and less than you would pay in the city for sure. The shower is always clean, the mats are in great condition, and there's almost always parking. But when you join the gym, what you're paying for isn't the building, it's the teachings of Professors Nate and Zach Adamson, the black belt owners and instructors. Their relentless positivity makes every class a pleasure. Their lessons are detailed, and immediately useful. They craft thought out lesson plans that unfold over weeks. Classes are organized and productive, there is always a live sparring round at the end of the class, and there is a great sense of teamwork in the gym. No one is aggressive or angry. The people on the mats at Seaside Jiu Jitsu are there because they want to be there, they love being there, and it shows. I'm really happy I joined the gym. My only regret is that I can't spend more time there than I do. I would whole heartedly recommend this academy to anyone who wants to learn BJJ at any skill level. And I recommend Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to every single person on Earth! It's hugely beneficial for the body and mind. It creates positive, relaxed people who can defend themselves! These guys are the real deal. The classes are great and come if you're prepared to get a great workout. I don't know if you've heard, but jiu jitsu can be a very weird sport to get into. The reason is that you have to be totally comfortable with getting to very crazy positions to train. It doesn't matter. The people going here are totally great and the instructors are better. They know what they are doing and are very friendly and approachable. I came from Texas and living in the Pac NW isn't easy to stay in shape in those circumstances. The classes from these guys helped get me back there, and taught me to put a choke hold on someone if I need to. Highly recommend Zach, Nate, and Seaside BJJ. read more

Our son and daughter attended their class for several months this year. While we have nothing bad to say about their courses (the kids gave rave reviews), their business practices are less then exemplary. We moved away from the area for a new job, and my wife forgot to cancel the kids class fees which were auto-debited every month. We called back later in the month hoping to get a refund (since the kids never attended) and were told that they were "happy to give us a credit to use if we were ever in the area again", but that no refund could be given. Unless we plan on driving halfway across to the state several times a week, this is essentially money down the drain for a service that we could never use. Bad business in my book. read more

I count myself as lucky that I stumbled across Seaside Jiu Jitsu while on vacation in the area. I found their listing online, and took advantage of their free lesson offer. From the moment I entered their academy I was impressed. They went out of their way to welcome me, and their students were openly friendly as well. The nervousness of trying something new, and trying with strangers, was put immediately behind me because of their great attitudes. It was a welcoming environment, to say the least. And the facility was clean and well kept, which is a serious plus in the martial arts community. The coach helped me to fix a problem I'd had with a difficult warm-up exercise for months, and I could tell by the crispness of the other students' exercises that attention to detail was serious factor in training style at Seaside Academy. When we progressed to working on techniques the instruction was clear and easy to execute, which is not always the case when dealing something as complex as grappling. I was paired with a more experienced student, who was patient and helpful with my lack of understanding, and who I felt made a real effort to tighten-up my movements and make them clean. On top of being great coaches, the guys who own and run the academy are world-class competitors with real, current accomplishments on the mat. They offer classes for all levels of experience and train in a wide range of self-defense techniques, and they offer specialized classes for women as well as classes for kids. Seaside Academy is a perfect example of a what martial arts school should be - inspiring coaches who love the arts and are dedicated to helping others realize the benefits of studying and training hard. read more

The coaches are respectful, excited to be there, and excellent role models. Communication between parents and coaches could be better but they do listen to concerns and address them accordingly.
