This vet seems to provide excellent conventional care…read more However, they seem to be operating under the belief that toxicity cannot cause harm and therefore does not need to be discussed, which I do not agree is in the best interests of the animals. Following are the issues that I have had. Diet: At one point, I asked about the possibility of a homemade diet and the vet just said that that would not be a good idea (and this is also stated in their puppy packet). While it does seem to be the case that an unsupplemented homemade diet can be problematic for dogs (especially with regard to calcium), dog food also tends to be heavily contaminated with mycotoxins and other toxicity (such as glyphosate). And although dogs have strong stomachs in terms of being able to digest microbe-contaminated food, they are if anything more susceptible than humans to being damaged by toxicity. I would have appreciated a discussion (or a pamphlet) on how to feed your dog a homemade diet properly if you choose to do so, rather than a blanket dismissal of the idea. Flea/Tick Medicines: On my first visit to the vet, I was shocked at the idea that pharmaceutical companies had come up with internal flea/tick killers and asked what the mechanism of action was. The vet said she didn't know. When I looked into the topic, I found out that this is affecting the GABA/glutamate channel (which reasonably seems likely to cause side effects) and that the FDA had stated that the use of these products increased the incidence of seizures in dogs. On my next visit, when I brought this up, the vet told me that this was a concern only for dogs who already had seizure conditions - something that is patently untrue since the FDA had actually said that the first-time seizure incidence was increased as well. This being the case, I think that the clinic should be discussing the pros and cons of these medications with pet owners, rather than making them think that there should be no concerns associated with them. Vaccines: When the doctor brought up the Lyme disease vaccine (which they recommend for all dogs), I stated that I was surprised since that vaccine had been associated with health effects (including a condition similar to Lyme disease) in humans and taken off the market. She didn't know anything about that and said the Lyme vaccine seemed safe for dogs. When I looked into the topic, however, it seems that the Lyme vaccine for dogs has similar problems to the ones for humans - that it causes a lot of side effects and also doesn't work very well to prevent Lyme. That should have been something the vet had been able to discuss. I also would prefer to have titer tests done for other vaccines besides rabies in the future (rather than just having the dog routinely re-vaccinated every year), but I don't see anything in the puppy packet or on the website that suggests that they are set up to do this. Medications: The clinic seemed to do an excellent job castrating my dog (including considerately giving me a call after he came out of surgery to let me know he had done okay). What they didn't tell me was that the NSAIDS that they prescribed as pain medication could have side effects. The FDA says that risks should be evaluated against benefits, but we did not have any such discussion. My dog did not seem to be in any pain and so I did not give him this medication, but I would have preferred to have been informed about how to tell if the drugs were needed rather than just told to give them to him. I do think that other than their unwarranted apparent belief that everything offered by big dog food companies and big pharmaceutical companies is perfectly safe for dogs, the folks at this vet clinic are terrific - competent, kind, well-organized, smart. So I do think that they are a good choice, especially to have on hand for emergencies. I just wouldn't necessarily advise that people trust everything that they say in terms of various pharmaceuticals and dog foods being perfectly safe is necessarily borne out by science.

They were so patient with us and because of our large family, even sacrificed some of their lunch to meet our needs. We had her cremated and they gave us nose and paw stamps from her as well with a card and hand written condolences. They really did take care of both our pets and us as people. Exceptional care, compassion, and kindness when we needed it most…read moreMy husband and I were vacationing in Galena, Illinois, with our two small dogs when we noticed that our 14-year-old Yorkiepoo was having a difficult time walking. Since we had been traveling and driving from Texas, we initially thought he might simply have a hitch in his giddy-up. But being a senior myself, I felt he needed to be seen sooner rather than later. I called Veterinary Associates of Galena around 4:15 p.m. and explained what was going on. They closed at 5:00, but without hesitation, they told us to bring him in. When we arrived, they took us back almost immediately and began examining him. They did blood work and even contacted our veterinarian back home in Texas to obtain his medical records and make sure they had everything they needed to properly evaluate him. Thankfully, his blood work came back perfect. They prescribed medication, and we were back at our hotel by about 5:30. The next morning, he was only so-so and was acting a little funny. I called Veterinary Associates again, and they were able to get us an appointment within a couple of hours. As he seemed to be feeling a little better, I ultimately decided to cancel the appointment. They told me that if anything changed, they didn't have another opening until the following morning, but they would do what they could. Unfortunately, by about 4:00 that afternoon, he had taken a major turn for the worse. I told my husband, "We need to go to the vet," and we didn't even call ahead. When we arrived, they immediately knew something was wrong and rushed us to the back -- and this was on a busy Friday with a full waiting room. They examined him extremely thoroughly and then sat down with us and counseled us through what was happening. Sadly, we were faced with the most heartbreaking decision a pet parent can ever make. What meant so much to us was that we never once felt rushed, dismissed, or like we were imposing on them, even though they were incredibly busy. Every veterinarian, veterinary technician, and staff member treated our precious boy with such compassion and dignity. And I especially want to mention the wonderful girls at the front desk. They were every bit as compassionate and caring as the medical staff. Because everything happened so quickly, I was having a very difficult time trying to figure out how we were going to get his paw prints back to Texas. One of the women at the front desk told me she would personally pay for the postage. Since it was the middle of summer and she was concerned the prints might melt during the trip, she even offered to take them home and "bake" them herself so they would be safe to make the journey home. That small act of kindness meant more to me than she could possibly know. Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking under any circumstances, but having it happen while you are hundreds of miles from home makes it even harder. Veterinary Associates of Galena gave our little guy the care, attention, and dignity he deserved, and they gave my husband and me compassion when we were at our most vulnerable. We cannot thank the entire team enough for everything they did for our fur baby and for us. We may have been from Texas and only in Galena on vacation, but they treated us like we had been their clients for years. If you are looking for a veterinary practice in the Galena area, I would wholeheartedly recommend Veterinary Associates. Five stars doesn't seem like nearly enough.

I wish I had done some online research on reviews of AWF before making a decision to adopt a puppy…read morefrom here. The petfinder description stated she was house trained. She was not. Within 5 minutes of being in my home she had diarrhea twice on my floors. She did not pee on the pee pad either. I had to confine her to an area to keep her from peeing everywhere. The petfinder description also said she's good with other dogs. She was not. She would not play with my other puppy and only wanted to play alone. She was not socialized. I realized this was likely because she was found in the woods in Georgia with her brother Luke covered in fleas and ticks. This historical information that I found on her brother (from a different adoption agency in Georgia) was omitted from my adopted puppy's petfinder description from AWF. When I confronted the manager about this she denied that the puppy was found in the woods. Why would the Georgia adoption agency lie about finding these 2 puppies in the woods covered in fleas and ticks? During her 48 hours with me, the puppy had diarrhea and WORMS. I had to pull 4+ inch worm out of her butt and then she pooped out a large chunk of worms as well. She also had a very potbellied appearance despite being very boney. It makes sense she would have these issues because she was found in the woods. When I confronted the manager about that, she said her brother Luke has had no issues (he was adopted by another AWF employee) and in their care her poops were fine. I told them the puppy looks unwell and looks different from the pictures posted on petfinder. Her eyes look bad and they said it's just eye crud that could be wiped away. I tried to wipe it away and it didn't go away. I don't even know if this dog has been looked over by a vet. How do you miss worms or parasites in a puppy if it could be easily be found through a fecal test? A 4+ inch worm means she was infected for a long time. Her medical file did not show she was taking any dewormer medicine, only preventative medicine for worms. I asked for a refund of my $1,100 because of the misrepresentation. They said NO even though I told them she's not the puppy that was described or shown in pictures on petfinder. They lie here to get the dogs adopted without considering their health and welfare. I've included a picture of what she should have looked like and what she looked like when she was given to me. I hope they will give her the medication she needs so she can rid herself of the worms and get the nutrients she needs. I also hope her parasites were not spread to other dogs in the shelter.

Abby didn't get no information from me about my dog and she said she will sign and fill in the paperwork on my dog instead of getting accurate information. After seeing my dog on their website being put up for adoption I filled out the paperwork to adopt him back to my home. Abby then texted me & asked why did I surrender him if I wanted to adopt him later on. I let her know the reason prior and we communicated the whole time they had my dog. Due to her own reasons she said she didn't feel comfortable adopting my dog back to me, mind you he only was gone a month. This is very heartbreaking to me because if I didn't want my dog I wouldn't be trying to adopt him. The information on the website is incorrect and they changed his name as if he had no name and I text them and asked them why they changed his name.
