Not that much to offer customer for a long ride to the fields! Price is too higher than the market or close by store.

I love everything about pumpkin, so when I read about College Run Farm (CRF) serving homemade pumpkin ice cream, I was sold. My boys and I decided to take advantage of a gorgeous fall day and drove to CRF in Surry. If you've been to Chippokes State Park, you know how rural that road is and narrow. CRF is right up the road past Chippokes' entrance. We figured we might be the only customers there; we were shocked to see a full parking lot and many people. CRF has pumpkins available already picked, but what's the fun of that? We went to the pumpkin patch with our sheet in hand -I posted a picture- and cutters in order to cut the pumpkin off the vine. My boys decided they wanted Aladdins, and they were in Section 1, easy to find. My youngest picked a small pumpkin ($6) and my two older boys wanted bigger ones (regular $7). CRF does not weigh pumpkins and you use the honor system. You put down which pumpkins and how much on the sheet; put your pumpkins in your vehicle; and then you take the sheet to inside to pay. While inside, you can also purchase admission for the corn maze ($3 per person--free for 5 and under), which we didn't do, and homemade pumpkin ice cream, which we DID do--FTW! I thought their ice cream was a pretty good value: big waffle cones with two scoops for $3.50--especially being homemade. They also serve homemade strawberry ice cream in the spring during their strawberry season. We enjoyed CRF; it had a relaxed feeling, and we loved being able to pick our own pumpkins off the vine. They don't have lots of fall festival stuff such as a bouncy house or hayride, but that was fine with me. Surry is a bit of a drive from Suffolk, but combining a visit with Chippokes State Park, it could be an awesome day.

Unfortunately, I missed out on their blackberry season that happened in May. In addition to the blueberries that were available for picking, peaches were sold in bushels placed on a table in their "store". Sometimes the owners are there to receive the money, and other times they run a honor system. Pencils were provided to write on the envelope to place it into the wooden box. The prices and size were posted on a sign the minute you walk inside. They were very reasonable, and fair compared to other farms. It was a hot sunny day, so the hubs picked quickly, since he tends to get sunburned and cranky lol. I'm the opposite, so I picked to my hearts content:) The blueberries were fresh and smaller than I'm used to. It tasted sweet and a little tart. The best part of it all, was that it was organic! Nowadays everything is sprayed, but this farm doesn't do that:) We revisited a few more times for picking. I knew the season was coming to a close, and needed some more to freeze. I made some cakes, and muffins out of the blueberries which lasted a few days. I sort of wished, I picked a large bucketful, cause as I'm writing this there is no more in the freezer. I'm sad lol We will be back!!!!

Originally, we were going to do one gallon but then switched to two quarts so we could split up and pick. They are cash only, so make sure to bring cash with you. There were so many blueberries to pick from. Rows and rows of ones that were ready to pick and others that should be ready in a week or so. There were a lot of flies and bees, so be cautious if you're allergic, but they didn't not bother us.

From the moment you hop onto those winding country roads, you feel the stress start to melt away. Parking is a breeze. It's literally an open field where you just pull in and park wherever. It's casual and easy, like everything here. The entrance is warm and inviting, and the women at the front stand welcomed us. You can immediately tell that every inch of this place was created with intention and care. Even the little playhouses for kids are painted in such charming colors. I visited toward the end of lavender season, so the fields weren't at their peak, but honestly it didn't matter. The wildflowers were in full bloom, and the sunflowers were just starting to bud. We had a blast feeding the sheep, who were clearly used to visitors and more than happy to accept snacks and attention. The gift shop is a must. It's packed with lavender goodies of course, but also a bunch of unique, cute items. I walked out with the cutest bee T-shirt & enamel pin. Then there's the café, which had everything from sandwiches to lavender ice cream, cotton candy, slushies. Yes, we tried it all! The lavender ice cream stole the show for me. I'll be back for my lavender ice cream fix! One of the best parts was spending time wandering the flower fields and cutting blooms for our own bouquet. Sweethaven feels like a dream. Everything about it is thoughtful, beautiful, and full of joy. I left with a full heart, a bag of goodies, and lavender ice cream on my mind. Already counting down the days until we visit again.

I worked here several years ago when the farm was in its embryonic stage and let me tell you, it's blossomed! Here you'll find an amazing selection of herbs, vegetable/fruit plants, flowers, annuals, perennials and more! And of course, the gorgeous lavender! RVA residents shouldn't miss an opportunity to visit this small farm tucked away in a Glen Allen neighborhood. Off Greenwood Road, drive down the country lane and it will dead end at the farm. If you have out of town guests, a ride to this hidden treasure will make for a fun day trip! In the spring, plants and herbs from A-Z are available, starting at Anise Hyssop and down the line! Some of the perennial herbs I had purchased here years ago, still come back year after year! My Sweet Woodruff was planted many moons pasts and flourishes as a ground cover each season! They also carry some hard to find herb varieties too! I'm especially fond of the Cuban Oregano, Tuscan Blue Rosemary(that's for remembrance, quoting Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet) and the Rue (you must wear your rue with a difference, Ophelia says!) Winter, spring, summer or fall, there's always something to see at Lavender Fields. In addition to the wide selection of plants, LFHF also has other amenities; local raw honey, tours, classes, a gift shop, teas, garden supplies and tools, planters, beautiful landscaping that backs up the the Chickahominy River, and don't forget their famous lavender lemonade and ice cream. I'm happy to support this family owned, local business that is spreading seeds of joy in their path, beautifying Richmond one garden at a thyme! You'll rue the day you missed the opportunity to visit Lavender Fields Farm!
