This 1970's Courthouse is classic Mid-Century Modern building designed by Indianapolis-based architects Wright, Porteous and Lowe. Wright, Porteous and Lowe designed many notable structures including the City-County building and Children's Museum in Indianapolis. Jeffersonville is the county seat for Clark County. This is the third courthouse to serve the county. Most notable, the building has beautiful arches surrounding the main structure. My visit inside was brief as the interior architecture as not as interesting as the beautiful facade. I saw lots of run-of-the-mill offices. The deputy that I spoke with did not know of any history regarding the building and he was busy with his deputy duties. Outside, there is a refreshingly modern Veteran's Memorial. Friendly protesters were protesting outside the building. This is a fully working Courthouse. We found free street parking near the building. The building is worth a drive-by if you like modern architecture (which I do).

As was usual in the years of slavery, the founding members had the sponsorship of a protection committee, appointed by First Baptist Church (now Walnut Street). The first pastor was Elder George Wells, 1844-1850." and on the reverse, "The church was more than a religious experience for African Americans. It was also a school, a social center, and a training ground in group cooperation. In 1848 the church relocated to Green Street (now Liberty) and took its current name in 1860. Church moved to its new edifice at 519 East Gray Street, September 29, 1930. Over." It is marker number 1949 and was erected in 1994 by the Green Street Baptist Church, the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Department of Highways. There is metered street parking nearby.
