They escaped slavery in Louisville in 1831 and fled to Detroit, Michigan. However, they were captured in 1833 and ordered to be sent back to Louisville, which sparked the "The Blackburn Riots of 1833," Detroit's first racial riot. They were able to escape and were smuggled to Canada, where they started Canada's first taxi company in Toronto in 1837. I think this would be a great Canadian Heritage Minute! The sign is well maintained and gives clear background on the county's naming and early Kentucky history, which is interesting if you like local or state history. That said, it's very simple -- no additional context, photos, or nearby features to make it more engaging. It's a nice stop if you're already in the area or passing through, but not something I'd plan a trip around.
