As someone who attended a Black college for my undergrad and who has spent a good amount of time immersed in the Black community, I often make it a point when I visit cities and towns to explore sites that are important to the diversity of Indiana. The Leora Brown School is one such site. Located in Corydon, Indiana - the state of Indiana's first capitol - the Leora Brown School is a one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1891 for the sole purpose of educating African-American children. It is one of Indiana's oldest schools established for that purpose and Brown's family largely spearheaded the effort to restore the school. Originally known as the "Corydon Colored School," it was one of the first African-American schools and had its first graduating class in 1897. Leora Brown was one such graduate and she would go on to attend Blaker's Teachers College in Indianapolis. Once she graduated from college, she returned to Corydon and would teach in the school for the next 26 years until the end of segregation (theoretically, anyway). The building has been beautifully restored including a ramp that offers wheelchair access. It's a historical site and cultural center. Part of the original blackboard is still in the building. The state of Indiana has marked the school with a Historical Marker. In 1949, Indiana did move toward desegregation (slowly). In 1950, all public schools were required to be integrated. In practice, this eliminated many teaching jobs for African-American teachers as they had difficulty finding work in formerly all-white schools. This included Leora Brown. The school was restored around 1993. This is definitely a must-see for history buffs and those interested in Indiana's history of addressing racism. Since Corydon has an abundance of history to see, it's a delightful day trip that I would highly recommend.

It's a nice little piece of local history about Adam Shepherd and how the town got started. The sign is well kept and easy to read, but it's really just a quick stop -- not much else around it besides the courthouse lawn. Worth a look if you're already in the area, but probably not something you'd go out of your way to see. Glad to see Shepherdsville is adding all their historical significance

Many people are unaware of this small historic cemetery on the fringes of Jefferson County. This is…read morethe resting place of Abraham Lincoln's grandfather who was killed by Indians. Abraham's father, Thomas Lincoln, was 8 years old at the time. This is a small but interesting cemetery that is also the resting place of early pioneers and revolutionary war veterans. If you are interested in history and old cemeteries then you should consider visiting this gem.

Apparently, Abraham Lincoln's family back in 1740s and so was spelled Linkhorn and not Lincoln which I found interesting. It was easy to locate with my Google Maps app for driving. Several bridges are also within view from this area. Multiple benches are scattered about in the area to encourage taking a pause to absorb the views.

Rosie the Riveter (aka Rose Will Monroe) apparently lived in Clarksville, Indiana, for a while. Not…read moreonly did she live in this part of Southern Indiana, but she raised her children here with her second husband, owned a construction company, drove a taxi, ran a beauty shop, and got her airplane pilot's license. Dang, Rosie! She could really do it. There is a statue erected of Rosie the River near Ashland Park, posing with her famous bicep flexed. Of course, you'll need to take a selfie, because the statue also overlooks the Ohio River and the Louisville skyline, and you'll get a great pic. This piece of public art is also conveniently located off of the Ohio River Greenway, so it's easy to get to.

A fancy looking park bench that sits in downtown Lousiville just off of e main street in front of…read morethe T.H. Sherley placard. Created by a local artist for the downtown area this is a fun designed park bench that doubles as a place to sit and a fun piece of public art work. Overall always fun to see and experience local treasures in the city. There is a placard on the ground that has the artist name as well. So it's great to give these artists there shout outs too for making our city more appealing artistically.

Bardstown welcome center also known as the former city hall of the city is one of my favorite…read morebuildings to look by and check out in the entire state of Kentucky. It sits beautifully and gigantically on the middle of a roundabout with several shoppes and places to eat surrounding this. Even as a kid when visiting my old Kentucky home the thing I remembered most was the "big building that had a circle around it". Just makes it shout that it's important. Note city halls should do that. Defiantly hard to miss. From what I could gather this mainly serves as the welcoming center now but still has some branches of government work held here. The outside is beautiful with plenty of places to sit and a couple cool monuments to Bardstown heroes and famous alumni. Overall I still love driving by or around this building. Very cool site to see and I look how I can go inside it now that it's a visitors center. Cool piece of Kentucky history and architecture here.

There's one next to the funeral home and you can take it all the way down close to where Dollar General is. I'd say go check it out.
