The history itself is interesting, especially if you like learning about lesser-known local events, but the marker is a bit weathered and the setting is pretty barebones. There's not much around besides the tracks, so it's definitely a quick stop rather than a destination. Worth pulling over for a few minutes if you're passing through, but not something you'd plan a trip around.

Owned by jockey Roscoe Goose from 1913 to 1971. Residential development in area thrived due to Churchill Downs. Goose benefited from the growing popularity of horseracing and increasing jockeys' wages. House reflected the rising status of sport. First Louisville native to win the KY Derby." And on the other side, "In 1913, Goose rode Donerail to victory with 91-1 odds, biggest longshot winner in Derby history. Goose retired from racing after an accident in 1918. Remained in the thoroughbred industry as a trainer and owner. Mentored young jockeys and opened his home to many. An early inductee to the KY Athletic Hall of Fame, Goose is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery." Roscoe Tarleton Goose was born near Louisville on January 21, 1891. Roscoe Goose also acted as an adviser to buyers of horses and served as president of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeders Association for three years. Success in racing and wise management of his money made him a very wealthy man. In 1963, Roscoe Goose was one of the inaugural class of inductees in the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. So right around Churchhill down there is this mile marker with the golden goose history on it. He was a jockey that they are celebrating for his biggest long shot victory. So it was cool to see and read about his history and obviously has passed away now and he is buried in Louisville's famous cemetery Cave Hill

So it is historical it has been in this location for many many years. It is obviously no longer used but they do have it set up like a classroom where you can look and explore and see it. It is right next to the elementary school Robbie. And is right off of Highway 44

Historical Marker #2072 on Main and 4th is titled "Kentucky Fugitives to Canada". It tells the…read morehistory of two slaves, Thornton and Lucie (aka Ruthy) Blackburn, who escaped to Canada. They escaped slavery in Louisville in 1831 and fled to Detroit, Michigan. However, they were captured in 1833 and ordered to be sent back to Louisville, which sparked the "The Blackburn Riots of 1833," Detroit's first racial riot. They were able to escape and were smuggled to Canada, where they started Canada's first taxi company in Toronto in 1837. I think this would be a great Canadian Heritage Minute! This sign was placed in 1966 and it's seen better days since then. It is a little obscured by some…read moretrees and there is no legal parking nearby. The marker reads, "Five Indiana regiments were formed at this rendezvous point in 1846-1847 for service in the Mexican War. The first 3,000 men departed for active duty under Brigadier-General Joseph Lane during July, 1846." For those unfamiliar, the Mexican-American war lasted from 1846 to 1848 and followed the US annexation of Texas which Mexico still considered Mexican territory since the government did not recognize the treaty signed by Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna when he was a prisoner of the Texian Army during the 1836 Texas Revolution. The war was decisively won by the United States and the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. The treaty gave the United States undisputed control of Texas and established the US-Meixcan border of the Rio Grande. It also ceded to the United States the present-day states of California, Nevada, and Utah, most of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.
