Dr. Cotsen has been a lifesaver for me. I've tried multiple psychiatrists and Dr. Cotsen has been by far one of the best. I've had feelings of sudden desperation, and Dr. Cotsen ALWAYS responds in a timely manner. There's a huge piece of mind that brings comfort that help is an email away. I suffer from anxiety and his calm demeanor helps slow things down for me. Suddenly that feeling of impending doom and that "I gotta gotta" mentality becomes a faint voice. He provides deep and meaningful thoughts into his feedback and tools (such as his blogpost) to help in your mental wellbeing. He is patient and helped me walk through several exercises. His perspective and knowledge is insightful, practical, and well intended. It helps me change my perspective on how I view life situations. I've had some bad days but have have become more optimistic about the future and reaching my full potential. I feel Dr. Cotsen really respects his profession and his clients. I'm super grateful that people like Dr. Cotsen exist. A good psychiatrist is hard to find, Dr. Cotsen is definitely one of them. read more

I've been seeing Dr Cotsen for almost a year now to treat my anxiety. It's been incredibly helpful to understand the why behind certain issues I was/am working through. It's amazing how he helps you dig deep to the root cause of the issues something not many are able to do, at least not in past experiences. I've learned new techniques to reduce my anxiety that easy to apply and I've been seeing results in reducing my anxiety something that was really difficult to do before. It's been amazing to find Dr Cotsen after years of searching to really understand and work through my issues. Dr. Cotsen was covering for my regular physician, over a holiday weekend. He literally didn't know me from Adam (pun intended). He could not humanly have been more concerned and compassionate. His conscientiousness and professionalism were immediately obvious. But, beyond that, his basic kindness and decency warmed our hearts. I was in trouble. I needed help. Dr. Cotsen stepped up, in a way that left me feeling understood and safe. I could not possibly recommend Dr. Cotsen highly enough. Big thank you! A+ read more

My time with Dr. Cotsen has been very beneficial. He provides an open and non-judgmental space for me to express myself comfortably, no matter the issue or topic we're working through. I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for a therapist and/or psychiatrist for any reason. read more

Dialing Dr. Cotsen's office to schedule an appointment when I moved to Los Angeles several years ago was among the most constructive, positive decisions I have made. Dr. Cotsen is easy to be around, and our regular session -- as I have told him -- is often the best conversation I'll have all month. I work in a creative field, and I'm certain my recent success is due, in part, to Dr. Cotsen's guidance and the progress we've made in his office. Before our first meeting I had fears about stepping into the office of a stereotypically austere Freudian, and worried about subjecting myself to some kind of monthly judgment, but Dr. Cotsen's approach isn't like that at all. He is an attentive listener, appreciative of the delicate therapy environment, and thoughtful above all else. If you're dealing with anxiety, career stress, and/or simply looking to improve outcomes in your daily life, I couldn't recommend Dr. Cotsen more highly. He's a powerful ally, and I'm deeply appreciative of our time together. read more

I started to see Dr. Cotsen during a very stressful time in my life five years ago and he has been my psychiatrist and psychotherapist ever since. He brings a calm demeanor complimented with a high level of intellect to our sessions. Over the years, his insight has been quite helpful and kept me on a healthy path. I am fortunate to be able to see him on a regular and consistent basis. This familiarity has assisted me in identifying patterns that I sometimes find myself in the process of repeating before I go too far in the wrong direction. He truly cares for the wellbeing of his patients. read more

It's funny to write a review of your psychiatrist, but Adam (it's okay for you to call him by his first name) has been so remarkably helpful, I want other people to know so they can have the benefit of this excellent doctor. I've been seeing him for about a year, and am much happier and more confident than I was 12 months ago. I decided to go to therapy because I felt unsettled. I identified a couple of patterns that I wanted to change, but I didn't know if I could. Spoiler alert: I could. And with Adam's help, I did. He's a really good listener who somehow makes it easy to talk about awkward, even embarrassing stuff. But he does more than create a Judgment-Free Zone. He offers insight and, when necessary, specific, helpful suggestions and strategies for how to approach individual problems. In fact, he's such a skilled clinician, he quickly recognized some patterns I hadn't noticed - and he helped me ditch them in favor of much healthier, more productive ones. Early on, I worried that therapy would be a grim process of dredging up painful issues and experiences. While we've occasionally examined old traumas, it hasn't been grim at all, and I'm pretty sure we've both laughed during every appointment. He's insightful and ethical and earnest and thoughtful and smart and respectful and professional and engaging and warm - all the qualities you want in a therapist. I get the sense that he genuinely cares about his patients, and that I'm not merely his 3 p.m. appointment. A few other things, one more important than the other: He returns calls quickly and his office and waiting room are clean and comfortable. Individual results, as they say, may vary, but mine have been great - and some were very fast. As I said at the top, I'm a whole lot happier and more self-aware now than I was only a year ago. Some things that used to bother me a lot no longer do (or only bother me a very little). Adam helped me tremendously, and he still does. If you're reading Yelp reviews of psychiatrists, there's an awfully good chance you're looking for a great psychiatrist. You've found him. I have recommended Adam to friends and I recommend him to you. read more

I've seen Dr Cotsen for almost 15 years and I will say he's an excellent therapist and who is also incredibly knowledgeable about medications. I've been able to discuss a range of issues with him and I appreciate his perspective and feedback. We've had times where we met every week and other times where we met a few times a year but he always comes to our appointments prepared and able to pick up exactly where we left off. Five stars. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Adam for about a year and a half. In that time, he has become an essential part of my support structure and a profound source of insight, clarity, and comfort. He is an incredible clinician and a truly lovely, lovely human being. His naturally calm demeanor helps you feel instantly centered and safe, and he doesn't just listen--he really *hears* what you're saying. At the same time, he's not one of those psychotherapists who just smiles and nods. He offers logical, helpful, actionable feedback and valuable insights that shed light on how--and why--we think and behave in the ways we do. I've made so many important connections and discoveries with Dr. Adam's guidance. He lets me vent when I need to vent; he gently challenges me when I need to be challenged; and he offers the curative effects of a good sense of humor--indeed, we've shared some much-needed, restorative belly-laughs. I also get the feeling that, for all the ways Dr. Adam helps me, he is able to provide all sorts of other professional therapeutic support, depending on the needs of the client sitting across from him at any given moment. He's *that* good, and that attuned to his clients. He instinctively knows what works for me, which results in cutting to the heart of issues and no time wasted. We can then discuss, discover, and implement the changes that lead to healthy, positive growth. I view each session as a collaboration, with Dr. Adam's calm and steady voice giving me the tools I need to lead a stable, fulfilling life. Every session is time (and money) well spent. And one big logistical bonus: Parking has always been a breeze. The building offers valet service, but I've never had to use it since street parking is plentiful. That's no small perk for an Angeleno. :-) read more

As an entrepreneur in a new city the stress of building a new life and keeping a company afloat finally got to me. At a certain point I realized that my typical practice of mindfulness and meditation was not helping me and that I was sinking further into a hopeless state. I started seeing Dr Cotsen and within a couple of meetings I realized that this was a psychiatrist that bases his practice on a pragmatic and open minded approach. This is exactly what I needed and happy to report that his practical approach helped tremendously in pulling me out of a state of despair and apathy. read more

At the age of 50, I was struck with panic attacks and horrible anxiety. My case was beyond what my GP was able to treat, and so he referred me to a psychiatrist. I had never visited one before, and being a reserved man, I was uncertain how much I would be able to embrace the process in order for it to help me. After exhaustive research and speaking with a handful of doctors, I decided that Dr. Cotsen would be the best fit. My instincts proved to be spot on. Dr. Cotsen worked with me to address my immediate need -- to get back to work and a more normal state of life -- and then transitioned to a more longterm plan. He is cautious with medication but applies it where needed. He is also incredibly kind and easy to open up to. It wouldn't be hyperbole to say that Dr Cotsen changed my life -- for the better, of course. I can't recommend him highly enough. read more

I saw Dr. Cotsen for most of the year that I was living in LA. I came to him looking for simply a psychiatrist to help me manage medication, but found him to be a wonderfully capable psychotherapist as well. I've yet to come across another therapist--let alone a psychiatrist--who is so invested in their client's mental health and well-being in such a holistic manner. Relatable, welcoming, and supportive to the utmost degree. I couldn't recommend him more highly! read more

I would highly recommend Dr. Cotsen to anyone seeking a psychiatrist and/or psychotherapist. Shortly after making a big move to Los Angeles, i needed to find a local psychotherapist I was comfortable with. It's not always easy to find a therapist that is right for you, but because of the empathy he displayed towards me from the first appointment, he made me feel really comfortable right away. I have been going to Dr. Cotsen for the last two years, and he has helped improve my overall wellbeing, while also managing meds. He is really responsive when you need to get in touch, and always tries to work around my work schedule. I couldn't recommend him enough. read more

Finding the right doctor can be a daunting process. I was referred to Dr. Adam Cotsen after a traumatic break up three years ago. I leave every session with feelings of relief and accomplishment. His office is a place of trust and comfort and I know my well being is his top priority. Dr. Cotsen is an extremely competent and caring psychiatrist & psychotherapist. He genuinely cares about his clients and very devoted to improve their mental health. A caring psychiatrist is rare enough to find, let alone he is also a psychotherapist. The fact that he is qualified to be both and save me the headache to find and coordinate with another doctor is such a big plus, it is what attracted my attention from the first place. I knew from the very first session that he is going to be my doctor --- no hesitation. He has a very calming power, yet he is also strong and intelligent enough to help you solve your problems, whatever they might be. Working with him has a significant positive influence on my life. Unfortunately I have to leave LA for the moment, but I will move back in the future just to have him as my doctor again --- as someone who has seen a good number of therapists, you can count on me when I say he is absolutely the best there is. read more

I have been going to Dr. Cotsen for about two years now and can only recommend him whole heartedly to anyone who feels it's time they addressed some of their issues with a professional. I normally don't write reviews unless a business is either exceptionally good or the counter opposite. In Dr. Cotsen's case it is the former! Two years ago I was dealing with stressors in my life that I could no longer handle by myself and so I knew it was time to make that step and become one of those people who have to go see a "shrink". Once I overcame my fear of that stigma I began very thorough research, for if I were to go then at least I needed to go to the very best I could find! After some time of searching I came upon Dr. Adam's practice and what made me chose him were his credentials, his reviews and last not least the overall impression I got from his website, his articles and so on. In short, he clearly knew his stuff! So, fast forward two years I made the right decision back then as meanwhile I have been able to overcome what was ailing me and Dr. Cotsen played a major part in that! Because I was afraid of landing in the wrong hands I must admit that my expectations of him were very high and still he managed to pleasantly surprise me! He is exceptionally intelligent, aware and will see right through you even when you yourself are so busy with yourself that you can no longer see the forest for the trees! He is also very gentle, non invasive and never made me feel uncomfortable even when I was speaking of rather embarrassing, personal details. The one thing which stood out the most to me and which I certainly did not expect from psycho therapy, is how much we ended up laughing together! Dr. Cotsen's approach enabled me, over time, to gain a more accurate, neutral perception of myself rather than being too closed-off immersed in myself and thus the severity of what was on my mind at times began to seem smaller until it lessened altogether! To sum this up I highly recommend Dr. Cotsen because you will be hard pressed in finding a more qualified, genial and compassionate mental health care provider than him! read more

This doctor gets one whole star for being kind enough to refund me the cost of the evaluation so that I could use the money to find a better doctor worth my time. He was easy to contact on the phone and schedule with. His office has a gorgeous view. However, he's a judgemental asshole. I wrote a lengthy review explaining my opinion but it's too long to fit on Yelp, I'll have to find somewhere else to publish. If anyone wants details please contact me. I rarely write reviews, and most of them are positive but honestly I wish I had known going into this how uncomfortable Dr. Cotsen would make me for 45 minutes. He accused me of lying to him, of having overtaken medication in the past (wtf?!), and of leaving out certain medications I had been on the past. I have a complicated health story that involves a childhood chronic pain condition and an adult depression past trauma I won't get into, and extreme anxiety. That's one thing Dr. Cotsen and I had in common (besides our mutual love of flowers)-- he is an extremely anxious person and it was overwhelmingly apparent throughout my appointment. He made me feel like I was doing something wrong or trying to hide things from him, he accused me of drug seeking implying I was an addict-- where in reality though addiction runs in my family and I've been around it I'm so lucky to not have that gene. He would not believe my explanations, constantly cutting me off and reminding me of the time limit (I heard "my 6pm will be waiting about 6 times). It's already hard enough to open up to someone like this, putting all your flaws out on the table, trusting someone that you are in a safe space. Especially as a young-ish woman. I did not feel safe, bolted out as soon as I could. He sweetly reminded me I could stop at the ladies room to maybe wash my tear soaked face on the way to the elevator. I wanted to be able to rewind and just start over, but it was clear he wasn't changing the way he viewed me. I wanted to chalk it up to me being overly sensitive but I was so upset my best friend had to pick me up. It was a terrible, physical damn-near anxiety attack -- wouldn't it be great if I had a knowledgeable doctor to help? I wanted so badly for this appointment to go well, I prepared questions and gave a comprehensive timeline of my medical history when allowed. read more

I knew I was starting to go into a depression and needed to find a psychiatrist. I was new to LA and asked my GP for some recommendations. I originally was just looking for someone who could help me with medications that would be safe with other medical prescriptions I was already taking for blood pressure. I've dealt with depression and anxiety in the past so I knew it was important to find the right mental health care provider. After two sessions with Dr. Cotsen I knew I had found the right resource. He is patient and attentive to the details. He hears what is troubling me and helps me process things even after the sessions. read more
