ISL International School of Languages - Adult Spanish class.

    ISL International School of Languages

At the time of this review, I have completed one language session and just started another session…read more(Advanced Spanish). Overall, I am having great experience with ISL. The pricing for an 8-week course (2hr session) seems pretty reasonable compared to other language schools - it's not the cheapest, but it's not super expensive. I really appreciated the school's administrator's quick responses to all of my questions prior to registering for my course. The school's website provides VERY detailed information about registering for courses, refunds, time commitments, etc. My professor (Rossy) is amazing and very patient in helping her class reach its language goals. LOL, I think she has a worksheet/example for EVERY possible linguistic situation. I do appreciate the small class size, which gives all students a chance to have a more personal experience. Actually, I was quite shocked (in a good way) that a couple other students have been working with Rossy for over five years. Although most of the courses are virtual (I could be wrong about this), I wish that there were some in-person courses/options especially for the weekend sessions. However, I understand that times are changing, and we as a society are moving to a more virtual world. Perhaps, this is outside of ISL's responsibility, but I wouldn't mind the incorporation of at least one in-person event/experience within course. However, I guess arranging an in-person event/excursion could be left to the discretion of the the course's professor and/or the students. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend ISL.

With the exception of a few very dedicated teachers, I have nothing good to say about this school…read more Facility: Classrooms often lack heat or air conditioning, and the bathrooms have two few stalls (the men's rooms has no urinal and only one stall for dozens of people, and the women's room has two stalls). They are filthy (urine on the floors and toilet seats, toilet tissue everywhere, odor sometimes so bad, it is nauseating, and at least one of the two sinks often stopped up). It is not uncommon to have mice running around the classroom, and once a dead mouse was not removed from a classroom for over a week. The odor of the dead rodent was unbelievable and extended into the hallway, and an administrator sprayed perfume in the hallway to "cover up" the odor. The students routinely complain about how uncomfortable the classroom seating is. Basic technological support such as dvd players, computers, etc. is either non-existent or often doesn't work. Staff: While some of the teachers are excellent and highly dedicated, some have poor English pronunciation and grammatical skills themselves. One teacher throws things, walks down the hallways yelling profanities and acts out physically on furniture in the classroom. Another comes to teach smelling heavily of alcohol. Some students who enter the classroom do not have enough English reading ability to be in a classroom that requires reading skills, and are literally wasting their money when they should have been in a literacy program and not in a vocational English program. The books are boring and not really appropriate for the needs of the students, and the exams are inconsistent, with some teachers making their own and others using prepared exams that are too easy as to really be a measurement tool. Students are shuffled back and forth from level to level to satisfy problems of classroom availability, and sometimes their grades are altered to allow them to be placed in a class they are not suited for in order to accommodate this space problem, or students are asked to skip levels because the school doesn't have adequate enrollment at a particular level.

Having attended this school, I can fully disagree with Savana M. The classrooms were comfortable, I…read morewent there in the begining of the winter through the begining of the summer and it was not too hot nor too cold. The restrooms were kept up by the maintenance staff and if there was ever a concern with them, they were always available. The staff are always willing to be of assistance and if you ever need rutuoring or clarification on any subject they are more then willing to have after school one on one time with you. No one has ever smelled of alcohol and no one acted less then mature. The school offers ESOL which is English as a Second Language, and the students in those classes do not cross over to the classes for Medical Assisting or otherwise. Even the administrators are there if you should need thier services. Im not sure if you have actually attended this school or if you just passed by, or maybe you just heard stories. But I attended this school and have come to appreciate it and the teachers who are dedicated to the education of the subject at hand. We are all entitled to our opinion, but facts are facts, this is not a terrible school, in fact as apart of the Alumni, its a great school.

SpanishBlackbelt - Typical Small Group Spanish Class

I have improved much more in 8 weeks with Spanish Blackbelt than in a semester at a junior college course. The small group means each student will get a lot of attention and nobody will be left behind. My tutor, Eduardo, was excellent. I highly recommend this program.

There is an online placement quiz that helps you select which class is appropriate for you. Here is what I really like about Spanish Blackbelt: The classes are casual; we meet at the local Starbuck's that is very close to my house. The class is small; there are only two of us. There is homework and it can be challenging. There is a strong focus on grammar and spelling. It can be daunting at times, but it is all online and it is very well organized with lots of visual aids. The teacher, Alejandro, is great. He is charming and warm and very encouraging. We speak only Spanish during the class and I've never been made to feel awkward about my rather clumsy skills. I'm only half-way through the Yellow level and have decided to continue to the next level. I truly wish I could wake up one morning and simply know how to speak Spanish. But, I think Spanish Blackbelt might be the next best way to become a Spanish speaker.
