Instructors (HW) are not knowledgable and do not know what the student needs to learn to get a job. The outcomes part 3 weeks with no classes at all. The group morale down for not enough support to get assignments done. The cost of this bootcamp for the instruction is not worth at all. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOTCAMP TO ANYONE. February 6, 2020 I left in the last two weeks due to no more new material, poor instruction due to three instructor changes, and choosing a job in the industry. Pluses First we'll start with the positives from the physical to the logical and qualitative. Location The GA campus in DC is clean, serviceable and well stocked with excellent Frontlines support. I would give it as near as 100% as possible. Classrooms always have working projectors, enough seats and whiteboards. Coffee, Peanut Butter and Jelly and tea bags are always plentiful. Outcomes The outcomes team gives the students most of the skills I learned in this industry at dozens of customers and clients over 20 plus years. As much as the students complained about the long sessions to me, those that follow its rigors will secure a position quickly. Curricula The curricula as defined in the GA SEI Syllabus compares well with Flatiron, CodingDojo, Trilogy and others. Instruction All lead instructors seemed knowledgeable of the material covered. All instructors were approachable and inviting of the material. Delivery The Google calendar was updated weekly with relatively accurate material to be presented and learned. Labs and software functioned as expected. Installfest saved the students trouble that they will quickly learn in the field. Compatibility and libraries are key from development to deployment. Minuses Now, some constructive guidance Location Those stairs are extremely steep and elevator access restricted. Heat in these historical buildings often has trouble on those frosty days. This one is no different, a space heater or two might help if compliant ones are available. Outcomes Only one thing I might recommend here are interview dry runs. We had one or two examples of interviews, and I imagine hiring panel next week will be equally excellent. But as mentioned below, practice, practice practice! All candidates I have ever met benefit from practicing the interview questions and the discomfort. I mentor all of my charges in this area. We even do professional development sessions on it. Curricula The curricula was not taught completely. For example, one of the reasons, that I, an experienced Engineer chose GA were the Algorithms and Data Structures courses as shown in the screenshots below. These courses were not available until after the course opened and even worse were never addressed. This pattern of missing core material as we moved forward forms part of the basis for my letter and departure. Instruction Our lead instructor changed three times. None of them covered all of the material separately or together. For new students this gap will carry over into their new careers. Although I mentioned this before and in tickets, it has not been addressed adequately. It cannot be rectified at this late stage. Delivery Furthermore there was often a lack of respect for the difficulties that the students faced. Comments such as the students are "lazy," "do not want to work," or "do not like to read have been heard." While I encourage constructive criticism it must be backed by instructional excellence. Instructional Excellence Although very personable as a whole the instructional style was far too loose to give new students the comfort they need in this difficult, challenging and dynamic field. Like sport and music, training for novices is about learning patterns and executing them repeatedly and in combination. As the student grows, these patterns or katas inspire the artists to create their own symphonies. Not enough structure was provided for training the students muscle or neurological pathways to allow for confident improvisation. This is my number one guidance. When teaching new material it is vital that it is taught, demonstrated, practiced and reviewed. Although much of the material had this character, it has not been consistent enough to train the students. On my final day I was directly criticized for the instructional failures of this cohort. I was told that I was pushing and telling the students what to do when in reality all that I did was: Describe the concept. Demonstrate the concept. Allow the students to choose issues to tackle. Reviewed them as a whole. The instructor who arrived later to try to guide us was disrespectful to me and to the classroom in his behavior. Summary I chose GA over the alternatives for several reasons. First, the curriculum met most of the baselines of each of the other bootcamps in the area, although it was slightly pricier, the vibe and location seemed worth it. I was lucky enough to have the Front-End-Web-Developer (FEWD) part-time class at General Assembly's new Washington location paid for my company, so no complaints on that front. Personally, if I had to pay for it myself, I think the price-tag is a bit steep. The location is currently under construction. It is getting redone to make it a true GA location, where young developers feel kind of at home - so minimalist, less office like, comfortable, hip...etc. This, however, doesn't interfere with the evening class that I'm taking. So it doesn't bother me. The instructor, Greg, is very good in explaining HTML/CSS/JavaScript and with no prior code experience, I feel like I'm making good progress. Took a workshop here for Intro to Python Programming. Great instructor with hands-on lessons as he moved on. The space is great! Street parking or garage parking. Wi-fi provided (naturally) and the classrooms are adequately spaced for seating, white board discussions, etc. SPECIFICALLY, my Into to Python class was exactly what I needed, at this time. I'd done some online free courses and the information wasn't exactly "clicking on all cylinders" for me. This four hour course made it all "plain" for me. As a programming hobbyist for about a year, I was already familiar with most of the concepts, but having someone explain them to you while digging into each with a real-time exercise definitely made them sink in more than watching videos in Codecademy. The class was completely full for a Saturday morning so you could tell it was one of their more popular ones. Pat was funny and engaging and covered a range of basic topics that lead to a functioning web page, so you do walk out something to show for your time. I took multiple data analysis workshops here and I would highly recommend. The price are affordable compare to other schools in the area. It is 10 mins walking distance from McPherson Sq metro and $6 garage parking after 5pm. I signed up for SQL, Python and R classes to expand my programming knowledge. Wow- was actually surprised by all the negative reviews below. I will start my review with the caveat that I've only participated in one-night classes (all listed below), never a long-term class option. Also, unlike others below, my main motivation has been to build more skills, not so much pivot careers/secure a new job. All three of my instructors have been knowledgeable and friendly. They all passed along their email addresses after class and seemed genuinely receptive to questions/happy to meet for coffee to discuss their lines of work. Also, GA typically emails out any slides decks shown in class, which is great if you prefer not to take notes. Project Management Essentials w/ Sherika Wynter: 3-hour class on Waterfall vs. Agile. As with any 3-hour class, don't expect to walk away with fully fleshed out know-how of the topic. The original cost of this class was $75 but as a first-time attendee, I had a $50 promo credit. Totally worth the $25. Intro to Coding: HTML & CSS, free interactive lecture. By the end of the class, you've built a sample web page and understand the relationship b/w HTML and CSS. Intro to UX Design w/ Maxim Leyzerovich, free lecture. Maxim was friendly and informative. Class moved a bit quickly at the end- probably because he was eager to touch on all points before class ended. TLDR; follow DC GA on Facebook and be on the lookout for their free events. I took the one day Data Analytics workshop with GA a few weeks ago. As a student I'm always looking for ways to improve myself and add to my skills. This course definitely delivers. The class itself was lead by an industry professional who was super down to earth and split us up based on skill level and challenged us accordingly. I've heard good things and knew that I would take something away from the course, what I didn't expect was having to sit outside afterwards to start implementing pivot tables into some of my work for a student organization. I've been looking into taking the long-term course after graduation and this class only made me want to graduate even faster. I was a member of the Web Development Immersive program offered at GADC a year ago, and today I'm a Software Engineer. WDI was a transformative experience for me, and I had a blast hacking all day with a group of driven, hard working, and like minded individuals. I have only fond memories of my experience at GADC. The school itself is very "agile", always looking for ways they can improve their curriculum, and student experience. They work very hard to make sure they are offering cutting edge content, and exciting opportunities for the student body. The staff/community couldn't be more welcoming. The overall vibe is very supportive, positive, diverse, respectful, understanding, and fun. GA offers lot's of great networking events (like their famous Friday happy hour), and there seems to always be something going on. The campus is awesome, and packed with studious, inspiring, and generally awesome people from a variety of backgrounds. There's tons of work space available, the tables and walls are white board ready, and the coffee is hot & delicious. Whether you want to change careers and study web development or UX design for 3 months, take night classes, or attend a one-day workshop, there's really no other place in DC that offers this level of community and technical training GA provides. read more

I've only taken one (day-long) class here but was pretty impressed by the value and content of the programming. Eight hours on a beautiful sunny Saturday is a hard commitment, but our instructor for introduction to Adobe Illustrator was really engaging and covered a wide range of basic tools/shapes/concepts. Our class was fairly small since it was such a nice day which left plenty of time for questions and hands-on help throughout the class. I do have to admit that I didn't get a good handle on Illustrator during the class, but that's because it's a really complex program (most of the issues I had were with the software itself) and one that would be better as a multi-week class rather than a day-long one. Details missing for the website: GA has laptops you can borrow onsite if you need to. They also provide beverages throughout the day and a pizza lunch. I took Digital Marketing and I thought this was a good class over all. With some changes, the class could be great. There were a few people in the class who already have degrees in marketing and/or work in marketing every day. Then there were others who had never looked at Google Analytics in their lives. The difference in the needs of these two groups is a very wide gap. I would suggest dividing this class into groups based on level of experience. That way the less experienced group can move at a comfortable pace, and the more experienced group can focus less on set up and case studies and more on optimization and applying these skills to their existing jobs. With that said, I still learned a lot and would recommend this course to a friend. read more

I took Creative Confidence: Transforming Your Ideas Into Reality on Monday, 28 January with Ms. Alanna Ford. The experience was fantastic, and I would highly recommend it. I say "experience" because it was not your typical instructor-led class (death by PowerPoint). Instead, Alanna walked us through two hours of self-discovery and action planning. I had the pleasure of visiting GA_DC for 3 days since they hosted the Kaiser Permanente and Microsoft Codeathon during DC Millennial week this year. Having been to a GA space in LA I was familiar with them and knew what to expect. I was however surprised at the amount of space they have. Occupying the entire 8th floor they're able to boast 3 large classrooms, a host of small conference rooms/offices, two pantries and an extremely large open space consisting of tables and chairs. The open space in the back has areas reserved for members and non members which is nice. For our event we had almost 90 codeathon participants and over 20 staff and the venue provided ample space. read more

The building on the outside looks like a regular office building but the general assembly office was like a warehouse...not what I expected but kinda cool nonetheless. I've taken two classes at GA in D.C. and have loved them both: the first was a day course in InDesign, taught by Sylvia, which was exactly what I needed. The pace was fast but I liked it -- for every lesson that felt 101, was another lesson that was nuanced and required me to pay very close attention -- the perfect balance for a bootcamp for beginners. I also just took a Digital Marketing Bootcamp, with Kristen, which also was a great experience. I found the same balance for this as well: for every "lesson" I already knew, there was one about an entirely new tool or hint that made it worth the spend. Overall, as a small business owner/consultant, I find the GA format to work really well. Spending a dedicated day to a certain topic with a professional/specialist who feels more like a guide than a college teacher helps me personally structure that day. Whether it's working on brand, learning relevant software, or simply dialing in my focus with quick review chats among other professional peers in the room far surpasses trying to sharpen any skill by at home, by yourself, with one of the mega-training online courses out there. The vibe is low key, the instructors are knowledgable, and the price is right to take as many as you can fit into your downtime. read more

I'm going to focus this on the "Outcomes" process at GA, what might be called "Job Placement" or "Career Counseling" at a typical college. I will admit that I became contemptuous of the Outcomes process, and I let it show, much more than I should have. I'm going to try to keep this focused on systemic flaws with Outcomes, not my personal issues. Roughly a half day of each week is devoted to Outcomes. The best sessions in my opinion were the guest speakers who work in the industry. We also got two weeks where we did site visits to companies that hire web developers. They were both to companies that might have been good places to work, but at least one has not been hiring web developers since the class ended! It's still an interesting tour, but I think it would be more worthwhile to tour places that can say, "we expect to be hiring when your class finishes"! The Outcomes team was also somewhat arrogant in their scheduling. One site visit was scheduled for the day a major project was due. I pointed that out, and one of the Outcomes team informed me that I should schedule my time better. Pardon me, but no -- with what I'm paying for the class, they need to schedule better. The rest of the Outcomes sessions were run by the Outcomes team themselves. There was lots of resume work, appropriately, but I feel it included an inordinate focus on a "brand statement" to put at the top of a resume. They never offered anything more than resume tweaks, students conducting mock interviews with each other, and other such things. They were also fond of surveys that were often repetitive and included questions I found silly. They'd occasionally add a little variety in the forms of "games" that would be good subjects for parodies in satires of corporate life. The sessions increasingly felt like a waste of time to me, and I considered "opting out" of the Outcomes process even before the end of the course. The after course material was what led me to finally leave the Outcomes process behind. They have several requirements to continue to receive support from the Outcomes team, but I'll just mention two. The first is to require to apply for ten jobs a week. That's a little on the high side, in my opinion, but they also suggest the graduates be selective in where they submit resumes. No matter how much they insist otherwise, being selective and submitting ten resumes a week is contradictory. They also initially requires graduates to come back to General Assembly once a week for Outcomes sessions, which consisted of a classroom portion, then a "small groups" session with one of the Outcomes team.. (They have dropped that requirement -- the classroom presentations are still held at GA, but are optional. Small groups can be conducted on-line, but are mandatory.) The after-class sessions were complete wastes of time. We had two guest speakers that I can remember,. Unlike the speakers during class, these were disappointing. One was unfamiliar with both the DC area and the high-tech industry, and the other was smug and arrogant. The rest of the post-course sessions were more resume tweaking, mock interviews and pep talks, all of which I found a waste of time. GA also promotes their network of employers. It is nowhere near as impressive as they claim. It seems to be limited almost entirely to employers located in DC. That ignores two major high tech areas nearby -- the high tech corridor along the Dulles Toll Road in Northern Virginia, and the biotech corridor along the 270 spur in Maryland. (Despite being biotech focused, they have plenty of software work.)They also have almost no network in the Federal sphere, either with the government agencies directly or the Federal contractor companies. I realize that many of GA's students and alumni might view Federal work as something they'd never want to do, but ignoring Federal work in DC cuts out an extraordinary selection of jobs. It would be like ignoring the financial industry in New York City. Ultimately, I feel GA was a waste of my time and money. The content of the course proper is worthwhile, but can be found much cheaper. The "Outcomes" support is of no use. read more

I invested in the Digital Marketing class out of pocket ($3500, tuition has since been raised to $3950?!) as a professional who already has abundance of experience in the research and data analysis domain. The biggest sell for me at the time of orientation was GA's highly advertised Google Analytics usage part of the course, since GA is a purported "partner". The level of exposure and hands-on experience through the curriculum was supposed to be enough to lead to Google Analytics certification. In reality, this class mainly turned out to be a marketing class, with the digital aspect (i.e. Google Analytics) relegated to the final 3/10 weeks. The level of knowledge demonstrated in class by the instructors surrounding the online marketing platforms varied significantly as well (Google Adwords, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) Only one out of three instructors had substantive talking points about the tools and context of use and could answer some of the algorithmic questions. The other instructors relied on useless, time-wasting group exercises on non-essential marketing topics (e.g. How would you deal with a PR issue on Twitter?) to occupy 2 hours of class time. Moreover, the course syllabus fails to mention that in order for you to derive as much hands-on experience as you can from what little exposure there is to Google Analytics, you need to have your own working website (and sizable audience) in order to use Google Analytics for training. Otherwise, it's just either observing or using Google's store data for demo experience. For those not in the digital marketing field already, this is a major hurdle to hands-on experience. The above problems aside, my personal biggest gripe with the teaching approach was that it's apparently GA policy to NOT SHARE lecture notes ahead of class to enable students to come prepared about a topic or with questions. In hindsight, a better and more practical option would've been taking a MOOC class, rather than believing that sinking $X amount of money would translate to meaningful structured learning. If you have the motivation, and the time, I would consider a MOOC over the General Assembly format any day. read more

My professor had real-world experience working in the industry I work in, and the project-focused nature of the class really helped me out (I've never worked too deeply with data before). I took the class just to add skills and it did just that - I feel a lot more confident with excel than before and learned a ton about SQL and tableau. Highly recommend! read more

General Assembly is great for a lot of things! Good alumni network, interesting classes, great community, delicious beverages, cool hipster environment. However, I think we all have forgotten about community colleges. I strongly urge you, reader, to reconsider taking a class here. You will pay a LOT of money for something you could learn for a few hundred dollars at a community college or for free online. Also, programming is not a thing that you can master in a few months. Even after you take the course, you will likely be unemployable in the field for at least months, maybe even a year, after graduation, and in that time you will be paying back hundreds of dollars a month that otherwise you could be using for living expenses. If you calculate how much the course will cost per hour, it is to the tune of around $60. Comparably, college rates (where you will actually get CREDIT) is around $30 an hour. If you took out a loan this figure is even higher with interest. General Assembly thrives on hope- offering expensive (appearing valuable) courses to those who are miserable in their careers and/or unemployed, hoping to transcend into making the big bucks in the computing field. However, immediate success in this aspect are slim. Sure, you will probably get out of your crappy job if you try hard enough, but maybe 1 or 2 people in your entire class will actually be able to get a job RIGHT after graduation. To be honest I regret taking my class because of how much money I am still paying off and the fact I am not in any way ready for a programming job. Seriously, either try learning this stuff for free online (the way it's meant to be) or take a college class which will actually be recognized by most HR departments. Or maybe even get a book (THE MANUAL) on the programming language. If I could go back in time somehow I would have just gotten the manual. The only situations where I think these classes are justified is if your company is footing the bill or if you are already an advanced programmer who wants to learn new skills fast and access the alumni network. read more

Bootcamps are a get-what-you-put-in type of experience. No, this is not an in depth, comprehensive course covering everything theory and tool you could possibly need to know about the field. What it is is a great way to build a foundation and explore your interests so you can find what you love to do and get good at it. I'm in the Data Science Immersive, and before this I could barely use the command line. Now I feel comfortable with the entire workflow of a data science project, and have a solid grasp on what tools exist and what I can now spend more time gathering resources and knowledge about. GA has given me what I hoped for to launch my career. I will need to put in effort to build on this learning, yes, but anyone getting started in their field will need to do that. I do feel like I could get a job as a data scientist and be ready to perform. With GA's career support, I have no worries about being able to do just that when I'm done with the course. If bootcamps are your style, this is a great option. As a caveat: As I am in the first cohort of the Data Science Immersive, there have definitely been some hiccups with curriculum, etc. However I'm well aware of how GA develops their courses each iteration and I see how awesome they quickly become (seeing the other courses here). I believe in their educational model (learn by doing) and they work hard to embody that. They're a great organization and this course has a solid starting point to move forward from. read more

I went to a free two-hour class on Digital Marketing. Though it was not a complete waste of my time, it was a rather frustrating experience. The instructor seemed experienced in the subject and excited about it, but mostly unaware or uncaring of the structure of the session and at her best while simply chatting about the topic in an almost random fashion. There was a practical exercise that was supposed to take most of the second hour. The instructor seemed completely unfamiliar with it and unwilling to figure it out and explain. She seemingly expected the group to just roll with it, getting clearly frustrated with questions. Why give participants a formula for a marketing campaign objective if you do not actually expect them to understand it or use it? Why waste our time on it? If you as an instructor do not like the out-of-box exercise you were given - it's your responsibility to come up with a better one. I create educational experiences for a living and this session clearly was very poorly designed and even more poorly delivered. This aligns with a lot of the feedback I just read on this page - GA attracts practitioners in the field to work as instructors, but lacks expertise in creating meaningful learning experiences. I really wanted to like this class and was excited about going and exploring what GA has to offer - the whole point of free classes. After this experience I will not be coming back and will not be recommending GA to people at my workplace. read more

I enrolled in the remote web design and development course and ended up dropping out of it in the 5th week (I stopped doing the video exercises and sub-par follow-along stuff) because it was painfully slow and the course could barely manage to cover even the basics of CSS3 and HTML5. I'm glad I didn't get sucked into taking the JavaScript course which Admissions had been pushing me to sign up for too because that would have been a disaster. I ultimately ended up enrolling in courses at Learning Tree that covered everything web dev related in just 8 days (two classes at 4 days each) vice just touching on a very small part of web dev in 10 weeks with the GA course. The GA course was a HUGE waste of money even with the minuscule GSA discount and it is funds that my employer will never get refunded. I will definitely NOT recommend GA be added to our approved list of training providers and will make sure they are on the Do Not Enroll list. I wouldn't want anyone to waste their valuable time and money on any of the courses that GA provides. Very, very disappointing experience with GA. read more

I took a free intro to coding class and really enjoyed it! It was a very basic class (by design) so some of the info I had already learned myself but having an in-class experience was very helpful. At the end of the day we had experience using and creating a one page site with HTML & CSS, learned about some developer tools that were useful in class and can be used to do our own work in the future and learned some things from the in-person help that I hadn't gotten from the online courses. The instructors/mentors really make the course and it's why I keep returning. I couldn't stand sitting through a 50 minute course in college but love GA's different approach/style. I took the digital marketing class at GA. My overall experience is so much lower than my expectation. Considering it costs not only $3500, but also 6 hours/week for 10 weeks in the classroom, and a decent amount of hours outside of the classroom, I would rate this class experience a failure. Diversity in the classroom is good sometime, but at least you should divide students to different groups if they have the totally different level of knowledge. I use those tools every day, and I expect myself learning how to make my job easier by adopting better method of analyzing, optimizing, etc. HOWEVER, While I was sitting in the class, about half of the time I was waiting for the teacher helping some of the students on how to set-up an account, or how to find a chart. Those classes can never be efficient. 3 hours on a topic are either not enough, or too much. The syllabus is a mess in the real life. I understand whoever wrote those must count the time on their own. But in the classroom, you need to adopt the syllabus to your audiences. Sometime, we would spend 1 hour and 30 mins on the teaching, then 1 hour just "playing the tools" by ourselves. And because the teachers didn't even taught enough at the first half, what do I suppose to do in the 2nd half? I build FB ads everyday in my work, I don't need to practice how to build one. I am here to learn how to many my ads better! There are other times that we spend 3 hours on teaching, with no practice, and after only 2 days, we spend another 3 hours on teaching again. GA should really do as what they advertised their classes, to actually customize it to your students. The teachers are unprofessional, at least in the GA. I understand all of them have a full-time job outside of GA. And GA thinks that teachers can deliver the real methods they are applying in their jobs. But this clearly brings in many disadvantages. 1. They won't be able to prioritize your needs, they can't talk with you during work hours, which are at least 40 hours a week. 2. You get slow feedback all the time on your homework and final projects. I won't see any feedback till at least 2-3 weeks after I submitted to the system. 3. They don't maintain a good work ethnic during their off full-time job work hours. If I am skyping a teacher for office hour, I should never expect he or she laying on the bed, wearing pajamas, and drinking a bottle of beer. I understand it's during weekend, but at least sit next to a table? 4. The teacher would cancel office hours suddenly. I generally have such a big issue with people can't follow the schedule. If I scheduled 7pm on Friday with you, it means I am not going anywhere for that evening. It is not fair for me, when that teacher wants to reschedule, and told me only an hour before it. One of the teachers is so lame that doesn't know more than me! This teacher can't come up with direct answers to my questions, so what he/she did was trying to go around the questions and redirect them. The worse thing is one of the teacher works for a partner of my company. I am not sure if he or she is aware of that. That totally prevented me to give bad rating on any of the feedback, because I am afraid it can be taken personally outside of the classroom. And I can't give too detailed information here, for the same reason. My suggestion is trying to figure out who is your teacher before you sign-up for this class. And you will need to spend much more time than GA tells you, after your class each week, if you want to get to the expectation. I took the Web Development Immersive class at GA, which is a 5 full days a week for 12 weeks class. It was intense, hard, tiring, stressful, fun, educational, and a billion other adjectives. I had amazing instructors and the team at GA did their best to ensure that I had a positive experience. Attending this class was one of the best decisions I ever made and not only did I learn career changing skills, I formed amazing friendships. I took GA's Web Development Immersive (WDI) from May 2016. My whole experience there was amazingly awesome. I was able to absorb and acquire the industry's best practice very efficiently and effectively. To be honest, I was not sure whether it was worthwhile because the tuition was not cheap. But I was assured that it was more than value for money by the end of Week 1. Especially, the instructors are awesome. They are not only smart and knowledgeable about Web development but also very attentive and really passionate about our progressing as a developer. As long as you are committed to becoming a good programmer and prepared in basic HTML/CSS/JS, you will be able to keep up and enjoy it although it is very fast-paced. On top of that, GA has a great support network, I met several GA graduates and they are all nice and supportive to me and I want to help new GA students like they are if I have a chance to do so. read more
