Eric's class is seen as unconventional by some, and probably for good reason, because part of his process is tackling the "instrumental" issues an actor faces, and an actors instrument is of course themselves. Eric's work deals with tackling the blocks that actors face when it comes to being able to perform. Some actors have difficulty expressing anger, others vulnerability, others joy, others "negative emotions" like jealousy, greed etc. Some actors suffer from low self-esteem, others are people pleasers, others have difficulty connecting emotionally with other people and so on. A large part of Eric's work is tackling these blocks that prevent an actor from being emotionally versatile, confident in their work and able to express themselves fully and in the moment. Some actors find this approach a little too personal or a bit out there, which is why I always recommend people read Eric's first book "No Acting Please" and audit at LEAST 2 classes before signing up. It's definitely a different class, and if it isn't for you, no biggie, there's plenty of great teachers in LA that may be a better fit. If you like what you see, jump on in, the class is one hell of a journey. Craft wise, Eric studied with Lee Strasberg @ The Actors Studio, and his work reflects that. While Eric teaches many ways to approach material, the cornerstones of the work are still things like sense memory, affective memory, animal work etc. and of course Eric teaches that your choices should all come from you and your own life experiences.

No matter how much technique they advertise having, the husband and wife team really don't have any interest in what is currently going on in the acting industry in LA and could care even less about anyone else's opinion other than their own unless you have some kind of popularity leverage A.KA. They have Favourites. They do not encourage any other modalities of acting (No Stanislavsky, Stella Adler, Upright Citizens Brigade, etc..) and if you do, they call it, "giving up on your acting career." I do not believe there is a passion for education. I believe the purpose of this "Workshop" is to carry on Eric Morris's legacy/Acting-doctrine more than help you into an actual acting career. My intention with this comment is to offer my experience and opinion. This place is a cult and if you're interested in that, then here it is!

The teachers that are hired are working professionals with incredible resumes. They truly care about you and will whip you into shape physically and artistically. I learned that performing arts is a business as much as it is an art form and thanks to AMDA I can call myself a working actor. Because of the opportunities given to me from AMDA I had my television debut earlier this year and returned as a recurring guest star. The downsides are - theater only seats about 135, which may or may not suit your needs, and there isn't a great deal of close parking. We also had a lot of things (including catering) to load in and that required going up and down a lot of stairs. There are elevators but we weren't given access to that part of the building since the nearby library seemed to still be open. But one of the good things is there is a (very small) kitchen you can use, so that means you can do your own catering, which will certainly help save money. The interiors aren't beautiful. Some of the carpets are stained and the look in general is very 1980's outdated. But I liked the convenience of the location, the friendly and helpful staff and the ability to bring in your own catering and have room for a small reception pre or post screening. If you're looking for a screening space, I do recommend you check out AFI.

In 2006-2007 Chapman's program stole some of the best Faculty from AFI because it was a bigger and better film program.  http://ftv.chapman.edu/about/facilities_equipment/ Call AFI and compare and contrast what Chapman offers before you enroll. No, it's not in Hollywood but it's an hour drive away from Hollywood.  Chapman has: many, many REAL editing suits a back lot NEW state of the art equipment not just a sound stage but 2 enough equipment for everyone all sorts or studios and stages for various aspects of filmmaking most of AFI's great faculty (excluding Jim McBride) a theater with 500 seats make-up rooms and green rooms oh, and a few hardcore libraries on campus. AFI has: none of the above.  no soundstages no new gear fuzzy monitors glitchy cameras a dozen molding editing suits a small 200 person theater no make-up rooms no green rooms (they'd like to turn the library into a green room for special lecture guests) a room called a library that's been gutted of everything rare and relevant for a filmmaker a nice view of the city on a clear day (but we all know LA is the most polluted city in the country so there is rarely a clear day) CELEBRITY GALAS CELEBRITY LECTURES, AFI's 100 Lists... that's what AFI is really about: the fluff the student is last on their lists of priorities. Lastly, I would like to say Martin Scorsese requested his original film score for Taxi Driver from the AFI "archives." First, the head librarian could not find it. Second, when found it was on top of some rickety shelves totally placed in a spot with no rhyme or reason. Third, this archive had broken windows and pigeons living inside it. So lastly, the film score was covered in a half inch layer of bird feces. Dear Scorsese, take your papers elsewhere! Dear aspiring filmmakers, visit the schools you're applying to or just apply to Chapman. WASC how could you accredite this place?

I had never taken an acting class (aside from a 6 week class when I was 12) but have always felt drawn to the craft and I could not have found a better teacher, guide, and mentor than Paul. Now, I can confidently call myself an actor. He has helped me tremendously to find parts of myself I didn't know were there, to improve my acting and confidence and he has done so with an exploratory, playful, and encouraging approach. I feel safe 'playing' in class with different choices and his direction is always on point and transformative. Paul has also helped me navigate the industry and I go to him when I have a question or need direction.
