Best PT office and staff around - very caring and friendly. And absolutely the best PTs, they really helped me!

I am overweight and have a herniated disc. I cannot stand or walk without extreme sharp pain…read morerunning down my leg, because it is pressing on a nerve. The doctor asked me "Have you ever heard of BMI?" and then told me that my BMI was too high for surgery. He referred me to PT and the "pain management clinic" that they are affiliated with somehow to receive a cortisone shot. He did not offer any medication for the intense nerve pain. I went to my family doctor in tears from the pain several days later, and she prescribed nerve pain meds that have helped me a little. The cortisone shot did not work and after trying to get some kind of help--ANY HELP--with the pain, the Brain and Spine Center cancelled my follow up and referred me back to the pain clinic, dumping me as a patient because my weight makes me "not a surgical candidate." The pain clinic set up an appointment weeks away and seems completely uninterested in the fact that, for the past 5 weeks, I have been unable to walk or stand without pain and can't sleep or function normally. This has been a nightmare experience and this doctor's office has not helped, but made it worse. I ended up driving to Arlington to see a neurosurgeon who has many awards and recognition and who did not mention my weight when discussing my options (which include surgery). I do not consider surgery to remove part of a disc that is pressing on a nerve - when the patient cannot stand or walk normally without intense pain - as ELECTIVE. (see photo) I don't recommend these people AT ALL.

I literally couldn't stand or walk without a cane and I'm 19 years old. When the doctor came in during both appointments, he came in assuming I wasn't in pain because of my age. At my second appointment he even completely forgot all of my information and basically started asking me questions from scratch again. He then called me a liar for saying I had trouble finding somewhere to do PT that took my insurance. The support staff is extremely rude as well and seem to act like they're better than you. By far the worst experience I've had with a doctor or doctors office. I wouldn't recommend this place to ANYONE.

Stephen took the time to go over my medical records ensuring that he was giving me the best care. I would highly recommend the National Spine and Pain Center to all that are experiencing distress with pain.

Do NOT go to the Winchester office! Not worth one star-- it's like negative all the stars, ever. I…read morehad reviewed this place before, but it's no longer on Yelp (???) ***side note: if you can get to the North Arlington office, Dr. Assaf Gordon is actually really good!! His bedside manner can sometimes seem not the greatest, but he actually does hear what you're saying and he treats what's wrong & discusses the options with you, and takes what you say seriously. He pays attention! I do not like NSPC at all and it's outrageous that if you live in VA you have no other choice for pain management. NSPC, and the Winchester office specifically, is nothing more than a patient mill. After moving to VA & finding no other option I went to the Winchester office. The staff & PAs were horrendous. Dr. Alok Gopal is one of the single worst doctors I have ever seen, and I see a LOT of doctors. He couldn't even remember what my medical condition was- even as he was staring at my chart!! At every single visit he suggested an implant procedure, then I would remind him I had a posterior cervical fusion from C2-C7 to which he'd reply, "oh you can't have that procedure, see you next month." I saw Gopal a handful of times, he gave me a series of injections that unfortunately gave no relief at all. I suspect because he was placing them in the wrong location. I don't believe he ever gave so much as a glance toward my previous medical records, even though I asked him several times to check where my previous doctor had done the injections. I had not asked Gopal for any new medications the entire time he was my doctor. BUT he knew exactly what I was taking, I had brought him ALL my current prescriptions, medical records, MRIs, X-rays, and surgical records. I TOLD HIM I was still taking an opioid my previous doctor prescribed for me and I did not need any new prescriptions at that time. And then at a later appointment they announced the doctor was not going to see me until I spoke to their in-house pharmacist. Who, by the way spoke to me with the office door open so that anyone, staff or patient, could listen in...so much for HIPPA. The pharmacist treated me like a drug seeking addict, and appeared to have no knowledge that this opioid had actually been prescribed by my previous doctor, and that I had been responsibly using this drug for more than 4 years at that point. When I produced the prescription bottle he seemed stunned and didn't quite know what to say. That's when I realized Gopal had never listened to a word I said, nor did he read my records, he simply saw an opioid in my urine test and knew he had not prescribed it & they assumed I was getting drugs illegally or something. The next time I saw Gopal (and without me saying anything) he actually yelled at me, "I am not prescribing this opioid for you, I will never prescribe this opioid for you." And then he actually proceeded to write me a prescription for a DIFFERENT OPIOID! Do I have to explain how ridiculous that is? I didn't fill that prescription and I never went back to Gopal.

He acts instead like he's either burned out as a doctor or too depressed to care. He seems annoyed if you ask questions and doesn't try to get to know you or your condition. No smiles, no expression, no empathy. After a painful nerve test which he administered, I had to come back in 3 weeks for the results even though the results were ready in a few minutes. At the next appointment he said I had neuropathy but had no idea why. I already knew that. He suggested an obscure blood test which he said wouldn't show anything, then abruptly left the room. End of appointment - no goodbyes, no words at all. What a waste of time and an overall unpleasant experience! Stay away from this man!
