I highly recommend Sentara ER. I had excellent treatment twice in 2025. In May, I had…read morecomplications several weeks after a minor surgical procedure. A doctor in a different specialty insisted I go to the ER, where I was seen after less than a half hour although not arriving by ambulance, or bleeding or unconscious. l had several tests and two scans and was admitted in about 2 1/2 hours. It turned out I had pneumonia, although cardiac problems were a distinct possibility due to chemo I have been receiving since 11/24. After 4 days that included iv antibiotics, I was released and had a complicated plan of more antibiotics and inhalers after returning home. One morning in October, I didn't just spill coffee but dropped the cup as I filled it. Because I had seen my mother have a TIA ("mini stroke," I recognized that was what I was having. As doon as I arrived at the ER, I was signed in (but could barely sign my name by that time). I spent only 3 hours in the ER, having tests and scans, before I was admitted for several days. I had the same WONDERFUL ER nurse, Olga, as in May. Even with continuous monitoring of vitals, someone checked on me every 10 minutes or less, which was appropriate in the circumstances. I have made a nearly full recovery...this time, but repetitions of TIAs are likely with my age (80s) and other complex health history. P.S. I have experience with ERs in several other places I have lived...this is the best, and I have gone several other times in the last 14 years. For less urgent problems, I go to local walk-in freestanding clinics, but these two situations clearly required full hospital work ups.

Though the staff at the radiology clinic were helpful, professional, and friendly, I can't give…read moreSentara a higher rating because they are price-gouging patients. In the fall of 2025, I got a simple x-ray on my foot, and Sentara charged me $442. The same procedure in the same location had cost me $80 in 2024. When I called, there was nothing they could do but send it through a nurse review. I haven't heard back about the nurse review, but after two weeks I just got a "new bill" that was the same as the old one. My insurance doesn't cover x-rays, but as I said, they charged me $80 previously for the same procedure in the same location. Now it's $442. This is grossly higher than the Virginia average of $103 or the national average of $280. I won't be able to afford another x-ray, even with a broken bone, unless I go elsewhere. Sentara is not recommended due to cost.
