We were sent to Shenandoah Soundstart by our pediatrician for a speech evaluation for our 3 year old son since he was not talking yet. During the evaluation, the specialist made my husband and myself feel as if we were terrible people for not getting the evaluation sooner. They told us that our son had autism, needed a hearing screening and continued to tell us he is failing in all aspects for a three-year-old.
Turns out our son does not have autism, and is where he needed to be for his age for everything except speech. They recommended he have occupational therapy 1-2 times a week and speech 2 times a week. They also told us both times we asked about the insurance coverage that our insurance covered it at no cost to us. This was a question that was important to us because our pediatrician disagreed with the occupational therapy but we decided if the insurance covered it that we would continue the therapy because it couldn't hurt.
We were given a schedule for Occupational but not speech because we were told they did not have enough openings for a permanent schedule and we would be first on the list when the new therapist started the first week of June. This never happened but we continued with the occupational. Today 3 months into therapy, we were handed a bill for over $1,000 because our insurance did not cover the therapy. So, for three months of WEEKLY therapy visits we were not told we had a bill accumulating. There was nothing sent out in the mail and we have not seen anything bill related until we were handed the paper today.
It is very sad considering all of the therapists that we have worked with were all very helpful and our son loved them. They did a great job helping his needs. It is disheartening that a company can take advantage of families who need the therapy for their children.
